What’s New

December 5, 2005 - POP Mail is released. This patches Mail V to receive mail from POP3 mail servers.

In addition, Mail V is updated. Version 5.2 incorporates a number of improvements:

  • Each e-mail account setup now defines both IMAP and SMTP servers, and you can specify which server to use when routing a message.
  • The Mail Assistant has been updated to reflect this change.
  • A size filter has been added so that large messages can be ignored when receiving.
  • A names filter has been added so that messages from people not in your Names can be ignored. This can reduce the amount of unsolicited bulk mail you download.
  • A vCard attachment containing more than one name card can now be displayed, and all the names Put Away together.
  • Login authentication is now enforced if you select it.

September 26, 2004 - Version 5.1.4 incorporates a number of fixes:

  • Download is no longer abandoned if you have several e-mail accounts and one of them has no mail.
  • Messages are stamped with the time they were received at your mail server so that they appear in your In Box in the right order. (The notoriously unreliable date header is no longer used).
  • The age preference rule can be more easily edited.
  • Login works correctly in the Swedish locale.
  • Unicode (UTF-8) text encoding has been added.
  • A Delete after download preference has been added.

May 28, 2004 - Version 5.1.3 does not force a .nwt filename extension on forwarded attachments. The Image Stationery now recognizes the image/jpg MIME content type.

April 27, 2004 - Version 5.1.2 fixes a problem when logging in and authenticating a long username, and no longer clips Notes sent as Image (GIF) to the display size. The Paper Stationery now renders HTML, using the engine from Eckhart Köppen’s Courier web browser.

April 1, 2004 - Version 5.1.1 adds support for Japanese and Chinese text encodings which are also released.

February 20, 2004 - Version 5.1 corrects a number of problems in the initial release:

  • Advanced users can now specify a mail path prefix in the owner card setup slip.
  • A large number of messages on the server no longer causes an error at login.
  • For greater compatibility, the SEARCH command is no longer used.
  • When browsing, switching to an offline folder no longer causes an error.
  • Nested attachments no longer cause an error.

The limit of 12 InBox folders imposed by the Newton OS is still there, but no longer causes an error if exceeded.
