JULY ARCHIVES 1998
Part 4 of 4
Tired of
installing 10 small apps for the customized Newton interface you're looking for? If we at
Planet Newton could only recommend one interface package it would have to be FiveSpeed's
new Dash Board. Dash Board 1.0.1 gives Newton users instant (and more importantly
constant) access to any application installed or running on the MP. One of the best
features is a HWR shortcut box! For instance, if a user wants to run Calculator while in
another app, he only has to write a "C" in the small text box on the Extras bar
and Calculator pops up. The features in this package are numerous and full -- from glance
access to time, battery and memory status, volume, contrast and backlight controls to a
Win95/Start-like popup program menu and user programmable scripts. The latest version
includes a few fixes and screen redraw enhancements. Credit: FiveSpeed Software.
If you use your Newton to keep track of movies
you've been wanting to rent, try Tom Sheppard's Newton Book of the world famous Internet
Movie Database. Mr. Sheppard's Newton book is a searchable collection of movies mostly
from the US and Canada released between 1997 and 1998. While some information was
not included due to size limitations, the book contains the title, country, rating, votes
for the rating, plot and the person who provided the plot description, actors (in ranked
order where info was provided), directors and producers. This version now
includes listing by genre, and a section listing any of the included movies also on the
AFI's Top 100 and the IMDb's Top 250. Users interested in downloading the
Newton Book of IMDb may also want to grab Avi Drissman's '61 Memory Fix as the author reports his book
may generate -10061 errors. IMPORTANT: When downloading this 3.5 MB file, make sure
you have enough space on a card to do so -- if insufficient space is available, the card
will be erased. For screenshots and other info, visit Mr. Sheppard's website. Credit: Tom

Tom Sheppard's new Newton book comprising the
American Film Institute's Top 100 movies of all time list and the Internet Movie
Database's Top 250 movie picks. This is a great way to get even more use
out of your Newton -- at the rental store! For screenshots and other info, visit Mr.
Sheppard's website.

Secret offers fast and true DES encryption for
Newton Notes. As long as you never forget your encryption password, you'll love this app.
After installing you will find a little "lock" button in your Notes
options bar. In addition the action picker will be extended by 'Protect' and 'Unprotect'.
These are present only if the selected note is unlocked. The lock in the button line
shows the state of the notes application. If it is locked, the notes marked with 'Protect'
are not available. To open the Note, simply tap on the lock button and enter your
password. This is a 30 day demo. The latest version includes OwnerInfo encryption, and a
fix for some reported errors occurring when shutting off the Newton with unencrypted
notes. Also included: increased Foundation Systems' HyperNewt compatibility.

Reminder can remind users of
meetings just like the Dates alarm function, but it can also remind you to place or finish
a call or perform a ToDo task, punctuated with gentle (in the case of the genie) comments
hoping you enjoyed your breakfast. Genie even workes with birthdays set in Names to remind
you of birthdays or anniversaries. Users may set preferences including nag intervals. With
MacinTalk and Speaktext installed, Reminder's personalities come to life! The latest
version includes a fix which prevented Reminder's Reg Code from running on some Newton
systems. Seven day expiring demo. (Note: The readme included with these files incorrectly
describes the included package as version 1.0, but the package itself is indeed Reminder
1.1.) Credit: Tactile Systems.
VoiceNotes 1.0 is the unique tool to turn a
MP2x00 into a full-featured digital dictating machine. Recordings can be compressed up to
1K/sec, which is 3.5MB for a 1 hour recording. VoiceNotes helps users take advantage of
the digital recording features of the Newton, including on the fly power switch activated
recording and several levels of sound recording options. VoiceNotes also has a handy
Search feature so you can find your VoiceNotes by date, title, attached memo or folder.
A pdf manual is available for this product.

This 34 page Newton book lists just about every
Renaissance Faire in the USA (and a few in foreign countries) by date. This July 4th
holiday weekend alone, the book lists 6 Renaissance Faires from Colorado to New York and
even Germany. Another feature of the book is an easy to use date search index,
accessed from the Newton's bellybutton. Credit: Michael Jones.
