ADDING SOUND
Part 2 of 2
Talking Alarms uses Apple's Macintalk for Newton
to speak the text of alarms on your Newton MessagePad with 2.X OS. It allows you to get a
spoken reminder in addition to the chime which normally plays. For more information please
see the readme. Talking Alarms requires Macintalk. Please do not ask the
developer if you don't have a copy. The Planeteers might be able to point you in the
right direction. Macintalk is pre-release software from Apple that found it's way
out on to the net and into many hands. Apple never officially released it. A number of
readers have reported that TalkingAlarms is apparently incompatible with SilverWare's
MoreInfo. This is a known bug with the way MoreInfo handles alarms differently than the
system applications. I don't own MoreInfo so it may be quite a while before this is fixed.
If anyone has technical insight into why these two programs are incompatible, please let
me know. Credit: Chris Mason.
TimePak is a large digital clock which utilized
voices via SayTime. The clock voices available include include languages ranging from
English and French to Polish and Vietnamese. The latest voice files added to TimePak
were recorded by French actor Alexandra Baillet in both English and French. Each available
voice archive contains a high-quality version and one that is smaller in size, for older
machines or a Newton lacking in memory. The Wei Xu (English) voice is included with the
basic TimePak download. Credit: Saint John Morrison.
Tone Pad 1.1 is a simple tone generator,
reminiscent of old Radio Shack 1 octave electronic keyboards. If you're a musician, you
may find Tone Pad a great way to work out that melody while commuting on a train.
There are many uses for tone generators, and we suspect this small app will have a wider
audience than just music lovers. The Tone Pad 1.0 display is a floating window, featuring
a Frequency Display Box which displays the current frequency that is to be
generated by clicking on the right 'Play Tone' button. Manual selection of a frequency is
accomplished by simply writing the desired frequency in the display box. Currently, the
tone generator will drop the decimal portion of the frequency entered, but the author may
include decimal support in future versions. TonePad v1.1 now supports duration
selection, and a 3 octave range for the piano keys! If you're downloading the .pkg
(MAC), we recommend also getting the readme file. Freeware.

VoiceAlarm 1.0 is a utility for creating your own
alert sounds for the Newton. VoiceAlarm 1.0 is tightly integrated into the MessagePad and
allows you to record (using the built-in microphone) and use sounds as system alerts.
Recorded sounds can be stored and optionally enabled for use by the Newton alert system.
This registered version was re-released as freeware as Visual Newt's way of thanking the
Newton community for their support. Both downloads below are password protected.
