Newton Beaming Information

All Newton devices provide an infrared beaming capability. Quoted as working over a one metre (three foot) distance, the protocol has evolved as newer devices are released.

This page attempts to document the capabilities and protocols supported by Newton devices. In particular, the Sharp ASK protocol, available on all existing Newtons, is documented in full.

The MessagePad 2000 and eMate 300 models, introduced in early 1997, were the first Newtons to support the IrDA standard protocol, in addition to the Sharp ASK protocol. This allows connection with newer laptop computers and IrDA enabled printers. They have since been joined by the MessagePad 2100 model.

The Apple Newton beaming uses a variant of a Sharp protocol also used in the Sharp IQ and OZ series organisers. The details are described in the book Wizard-IV I/R and PC-Link Data Communications. It is normally called the Sharp ASK IR Protocol.
