B2Uni Translator

The encoding system on the Newton is UNICODE, while most of the electronic documents in traditional Chinese language are encoded with Big5 code. B2Uni is a small extension on the Newton platform to do the translation job. Needed for Newt's Cape Chinese. This package is based on NTEncoding by GNUE (aka Makoto Nukui).

Cyrillic Reading Pack for Newton

Cyrillic is a port of a freeware X Window Cyrillic font to Newton platform (Unicode). Please observe the original copyright (see the enclosed BDF font header for detail). Also enclosed are code translation modules for GNUE's (aka Makoto Nukui) NTEncoding. You are able to send/receive file in the software which support NTEncoding (notably Steve Weyer's Newt's Cape.) The supported translations are,

1. MacCyrillic (Russian) <-> Unicode
2. ISO 8859-5 <-> Unicode
3. KOI-R <-> Unicode
4. Win 1251 <-> Unicode

You can also use UniTaipeiX (see below) which comes with full set of Latin-1 (ISO 8859-1), traditional Chinese (Big5), Japanese Kana and Kanji (JIS 208) and Cyrillic characters (KOI-R). There is also a code translator that can make it easy to share data between Newton and a desktop.

Cyrillic Writing Pack for Newton

Cyrillic Writing Pack includes a Cyrillic keyboard with which you can type Cyrillic in your Newton and a TapBar button for transliteration (Latin->Cyrillic). I'm using Graffiti as my keyboard and found the input of Cyrillic like a breeze.

UniTaipeiX Font (Be WARNED!)

UniTaipeiX is a port of freeware X Window fonts to Newton platform. Please observe the original copyright (see the enclosed BDF font headers for detail). This font include all the Big-5 characters (well, I hope) and all characters in JISX0208.1983 and Cyrillic characters. The fonts are down-sampled to 12 point, so that it can be kept as small as possible. UniTaipei patches the system font so that (hopefully) you can also use other languages in the built-in applications.

!! WARNING !!

Before you install this font, please remove the other font that patches the system font (notably UniTaipeiLite and old UniTaipeiX, or UniCJK?). It won't check if the other font patch is already installed. IT MIGHT HANG YOUR NEWTON IF OTHER FONT PATCH IS STALLED. !!! SO BE WARNED !!!

Bug or Feature?

UniTaipeiX replaces the system font. That means if you choose Espy, Causual (HandWriting), Fancy (New York), or Simple (Geneva), you will get UniTaipei instead. This make it possible to have Chinese characters displayed in every menu and in the Extras drawer. The original ROM fonts are renamed to Hand, USA, and Switzerland so that you can still write your fancy Latin script.

Technically, UniTaipeiX contains 9,10,12 and 18 pt characters for Latin and Cyrillic characters, but only 12pt for Japanese and Chinese characters. This is because I ONLY have 8M memory card, and I've got a lot to store on it. I don't want to have the size of one font four times so big ONLY to see some pretty Chinese character (and most of them I don't even recognize). Personally I think the built-in scaling is quite ugly, especially bold facing. Make a 12pt character bold means sometimes you will got only a crunched fly of a Hanzi/Kanji. So I let the CJ characters all displayed in 12pt and left the bold the same as normal. This is actually a feature. (And now you know why UniTaipeiLite is so big but contains much less characters. ;-) And don't forget you can't have everything, especially not for free. )

About how to install a free Chinese Language Kit on your Newton, please refer to "Free Chinese Language Kit for MP120/130" provided by J.S. Lin.

Uni24Lite Font

Uni24Lite is a port of a freeware X Window font to Newton platform. Uni24Lite contains only the frequently used Chinese character (traditional) and all Japanese JIS208 font in 24x24 format. The Newton point registry is 18pt, however. This font is mainly for those who are learning Japanese and Chinese and wishing to read Kanji/Hanzi in more detail.

NTUKai Font

Based on the free NTUKai TTF. Full Big5 code range supported, featuring better looking cyrillic characters. Be WARNED, some Chinese characters are quite illegible (sorry, this font is automatically sampled to 16x16 bitmap.)

UniTaipeiLite Font Patch (Be warned!)

Obsolete if you installed UniTapeiX font.

UniTaipeiLite is a freeware font released by MacBlue. With this font installed on the Newton, the user can read Chinese text and almost all the Japanese text on her Newton massagepad. However, the original Roman fonts are replaced by the Chinese font and can't be used anymore. Still, the input line which has handwriting font as default displaying font can't display Chinese character. TaipeiLiteX is a little patch to correct these problems. Please make sure that UniTeipeiLiteX is installed on the same storage as UniTaipeiLite. UniTaipeiLiteX should be loaded later than TaipeiLite. Some users have reported severe system crash, (I can't reproduce it, however), so BE WARNED!

About how to install a free Chinese Language Kit on your Newton, please refer to "Free Chinese Language Kit for MP120/130" provided by J.S. Lin. UniTaipeiLite font can be found in its master site or www.ifcss.org.

CLex: A Dictionary Engine (Shareware)

CLex is a multilingual dictionary engine. Notably it supports Chinese/Japanese and other script systems. There is a built-in memo so that you can put a new word in the memo for your later peruse. You can also look up a word online by selecting the word or simply place the cursor under the word you want to look up. A TapBar button is also included so that you can have access to CLex almost everywhere at any time.For the time being, owing to the copyright issue, the author can only offer the following free dictionary data. If you are holding the copyright of a useful bi-lingual dictionary and would like to port it to the Newton platform, or if you are aware of any useful dictionary data in the public domain, please contact the author. You have to have at least one dictionary data installed, otherwise you will see an error message.

There is also a version for Macintosh.

Please note that the copyright of the following dictionary data are held by their copyright holder. The author want to thank Jim Breen for his generous allowance me to distribute EDICT and JDDICT freely. Please read the included document.

Chinese Lunar Calendar

This calendar covers the Chinese lunar calendar data from 1904 to 2049. You choose the Gregorian calendar date and time from the date and time picker, the corresponding lunar date and time will be shown. The traditional notation in heaven-gan and earth-zhi is used. You don't need the Chinese system or font to read this notation (though you'll have to be able to read Chinese yourself, sorry I can't help that ;-)). Also the Eight-Characters (ba1zhi4) will be shown. Please note that the correctness of the lunar calendar data is not guaranteed.

There is also a version for Macintosh.
