TimePak Buttons including TimePak 2.x Button.pkg, TimePak 1.x Button.pkg, and TimePak TapBar Button.pkg TimePak is handy, but sometimes itÕs a drag having to open the Extras drawer just to get the time of day. These are buttons which install either in a TapBar palette or on the Status bar of applications such as the Notepad. TheyÕre freeware, but the packages they control are shareware: $5 for the whole magilla. ÑÑÑÑÑÑÑÑÑÑÑÑÑÑÑÑInstalling You can install these packages using the Newton Connection Utility, the Newton Backup Utility, or another package utility (such as LunaTech ResearchÕs PDA Package Downloader). The programs will exist happily on either internal memory or a memory card, but they really ought to go in internal memory. You should install only one of the buttons. Which one is appropriate? Well: ¥ If you use TapBar thereÕs no question. The package ÒTimePak TapBar Button.pkgÓ is especially for you. If youÕre not using TapBar, I highly recommend it. (It does, however, require a Newton running OS version 2.0 or later.) Get it from (itÕs in Japanese) or do a search on AMUGÕs website for the latest version of the software. ¥ If you have a 2.0 or 2.1 OS Newton such as the MP130, MP2000, MP2100, eMate 300, or later models of the MP120, then you can use the Ò2.xÓ package. This inserts a button into all the common applications that can support it: Names, Notes, and any other backdrop application that you may have selected. To choose an application as your backdrop, either tap ÒiÓ in Extras and select ÒMemory Info,Ó or highlight the icon and select ÒMake BackdropÓ from the Routing [envelope] button. (Some third-party backdrop applications, or some applications that were never intended as a backdrop, canÕt accept additional buttons.) Warning, Will Robinson: If you change your backdrop application after installing ÒTimePak 2.x Button.pkg,Ó youÕll get two buttons in one application and none in the other. To solve this, reset your Newton or scrub out Ò2.x:TimePak:StJÓ and re-install. ¥ If you have a 1.3 or earlier OS Newton such as the MP110, MP100, Original MessagePad, or early models of the MP120, youÕre going to have to use ÒTimePak 1.x Button.pkg.Ó This installs itself in the status bar of the Notepad, which is the only backdrop available for NOS 1.3 and earlier machines. To delete it, go into Prefs:Memory and remove the package Ò1.x:TimePak:StJÓ. ÑÑÑÑÑÑÑÑÑÑÑÑÑÑÑÑUsing the buttons All of the buttons work in the same way: Tapping them once will bring up SeeTime, and tapping-and-holding for about half a second (until you hear the ÒsqueaksÓ) will launch SayTime. ÑÑÑÑÑÑÑÑÑÑÑÑÑÑÑÑWhy doesnÕt a button show up in my Extras drawer? The Extras Drawer is one of those applications which donÕt recognize auxiliary buttons. Besides, you can just tap on the icon if Extras is your backdrop. ÑÑÑÑÑÑÑÑÑÑÑÑÑÑÑÑWhy doesnÕt a button show up in Dates? Ditto. Sorry. ÑÑÑÑÑÑÑÑÑÑÑÑÑÑÑÑShareware fee These buttons are considered part of TimePak, and as such if youÕve paid your shareware fee for that youÕre covered. If you havenÕt, youÕll get a little reminder every few times that you launch either SeeTime or SayTime. ÑÑÑÑÑÑÑÑÑÑÑÑÑÑÑÑDistribution These packages may be distributed freely, as long as [1] theyÕre all distributed together, [2] this ReadMe file is included and [3] no fee is charged for their distribution. Online services which charge a reasonable hourly rate but do not charge extra for downloads may place it in their libraries. Distributors of CD-ROMs and other software libraries may include it if prior permission is given; write to the author for details. The author has also released a number of other small but useful pieces of shareware and freeware. TheyÕre uploaded regularly to the usual sites.
