Are you talking about the
surface of the screen itself, or are you talking about the Newton product
called The Barrier? Is there a protruding bump on the screen, or a receding
scratch/gouge?

There is no "barrier" on the screen itself, unless you mean the thin
coating of some sort that gives the screen a little drag-iness and cuts
down on reflective glare. The Barrier (capital B) plastic insert can be
removed. The coating cannot be removed by anything short of a razor blade
(now there's a nightmare image for all us Newtoneers!).

In my experience, Apple Repair Center has little or no skill in addressing
the question of so-called "delamination" of the surface coating. I tried
twice to get Apple to look at the problem on my Newt, to no avail. My
suggestion is to buy a pack of the WriteRights or NuShields (The Barrier's
replacement, coming soon from a NewtonTalked near you) and slow down the
deterioration of the screen. Also, get thee a replacement stylus - either
from PDA Panache or Cross. The tip on the stock stylus is more likely to
create new and horrible scartches in your screen than the nicer, smoother,
softer tips on the Panache and Cross stylii.

------------------------------

Date: Thu, 18 Mar 1999 15:27:44 +0000
From: David Golden <davgol@earthlink.net>
Subject: Re: Ntlk Re: newtontalk-digest V2 #774

Hi there:

You can't. Faram" <mfaram@earthlink.net>
Subject: RE: Ntlk Outer layers on the screen

We're talking about the surface of the screen. I was given this
Newton-MP2000k, 14,4 Megahertz modem, Keyboard(no case) PC , one IBM cable
but no software or stylus by my systems director who said since Apple
discontinued development(etc.) the company had no use for it. Since I was a
PDA person with a PIII, WinCE palm-sized PC who spoke longingly about his
old MP2000 he thought I'd like it.

It was used by a reporter in the field and it has two receding scratches and
one gouge in the bottom third of the screen. It's annoying when you view it
in daylight or under lights, however when the backlighting dominates, they
are almost invisible.
They aren't show stoppers, but being kinda anal about my screens I think
about fixing the problem. As I have nothing into the unit, it's a
consideration for me. However If this "barrier" makes it more liveable I
would like to try that.
Maybe a covering over the screen would reduce the glare and make it more
useable. I also hope to upgrade this machine sometime. Is the Apple upgrade
better than some of these other 3rd party offerings?
I use a cross stylus, but am not opposed to others. I really need to find
the mac NCU software that came with the MP2000. I have the update to 1.0. I
also already have the IBM software.

- -----Original Message-----
From:	owner-newtontalk@esosoft.com [mailto:owner-newtontalk@esosoft.com] On
Behalf Of Powderly, Kyle
Sent:	Thursday, March 18, 1999 3:25 PM
To:	'Newtontalk@esosoft.com'
Subject:	RE: Ntlk Outer layers on the screen

Mark Faram wrote:
> I think that I've figured out that
> my "creases" are really scratches in the "barrier".

I think we need a clarification here, Mark.
