NamePrinter 1.4 NamePrinter is a Newton package that creates an address book listing or address labels from your Names soup. Output can be formatted in 1, 2, or 3 columns using a choice of several fonts and font sizes. Margins are adjustable. NamePrinter can print all names or just the names in a folder. Both US/UK and Continental Europe style postal code formats are supported. Version 1.4 is considerably more robust. Newton 2.0 OS only. Note: Non-registered copies are limited to one page of printing and margin settings will not be "remembered". Please see the section below on how to register and enable full package capability. Quick Start Select one of the "test page" formats and print. Adjust the margins to get the printout on the page the way you want. For address labels you may have to nudge the right-most column to get labels in the right place. When satisfied, print out all entries using the Listing or the Labels format. Address Book Formats NamePrinter prints out address lists in one, two, or three columns. The output is much more condensed than the built-in formats and does not contain any space-consuming graphics. From the main view screen you can select the font, font size, folder, and number of columns that you want. You can also adjust the number of blank lines between entries. For your first print it is suggested that you see how the default margin settings work on your printer by using the "test page" format which limits printout to one page. After you have chosen your settings, click on the Action button (the one that looks like an envelope) and print (or fax) as you would any other document. Do not rely on the print "preview" to set your margins. This preview is a screen shot of the page and your printer's output is sure to be different. Margin fine tuning is performed by clicking on the "Margins" button and selecting the values that work best for you. Once you are satisfied with your settings, change the format option to "Listing" and print your names. Margins are saved for the next time you print the address book. Label Formats NamePrinter can be configured to print on almost any kind of label page. Output is currently limited to one font type and size due to Newon heap limitations. Set your margins as described in the Address Book section of this document using the Labels Test Page format. The Right Column Nudge (in the Margins view) feature moves the right column to the right the chosen number of spaces to fit onto labels. If three columns are chosen for output, the middle column is moved 1/2 the number of chosen spaces. (This is due to the way the Newton formats output pages.) For each "nudge" space, you loose one character in your address line, so be judicious in your adjustments. The nudge feature is disabled in the Address List format. This allows you to save this adjustment for labels and always get a full-width listing for your address book. Because of the way Apple chose to set the page sizes, you can only print 9 labels down a page, not the 10 that is available on most common laserwriter address labels. To print on address labels that are taller than standard, add extra blank lines between entries to get the first line of each entry in the right position on the label. Postal Codes NamePrinter supports two styles of address formats: 1) the Continental European style where the postal codes are formatted as "postalcode city, region" and 2) the US/UK style of "city, region postalcode". You can force either format in the Prefs screen or you can choose "Smart Codes" (default). NamePrinter's "Smart Codes" option uses the Continental European style format if the postal code begins with a letter (eg. CH-1290) and uses the US/UK style for addresses where the postal code begins with a number (eg. 19083). Prefs If you need to permanently remove this package from your Newton, you should delete the preferences soup. Click on the "i" button, then click on the "Prefs" pop-up. Your preferences will be deleted when you click on the "Remove Prefs" button. Do not remove the prefs if you just move the package to a Card for use later. Fonts The System, Fancy, and Simple fonts are the only fonts in the Newton which output to printer fonts. Printing NamePrinter uses the standard Newton printing engine. If you can print a Newton note to your printer, you can print an address book or labels. Troubleshooting If you see ellipses on the right side of your of your printout column, the line of text may be too big to fit on a printed line. You can fix this by either reducing your font size or decreasing the number of columns in your output. You should have extra space at the bottom of you page due to the way the Newton formats the page for printing. Make sure that the page settings in your Newton Locale match those of your paper and your printer to optimize you output. Registration Fee NamePrinter is $20. Registered users will receive a password by email which will allow them to print more than one page. Registering - Kagi You can register this software by using the program "Register" written by Flash Sheridan and sending your payment to Kagi. Register allows you to pay for shareware with a credit card (Visa, MasterCard, AmericanExpress, NetCash, or FirstVirtual) or you can send a check or money order. Three versions of Register are available: one for the Newton, one for PC's and one for Mac's. You can use the Newton package to e-mail the form directly from your Newton if you have e-mail capability on your Newton. Or you can run Register on your PC or Mac. (A copy is of Register for the Newton is enclosed with all distributions of this package. Register.exe is included with zip files and Register for the Mac is included in the hqx files.) When you run Register, select NamePrinter from the list. When you enter the number of copies you want to register, the correct amount will be automatically calculated. Fill in the credit card type, credit card number, expiration date. If you are using the Newton version tap the envelope icon and choose mail. If you are using the PC or Mac version you can use Register to copy the form so you can paste it into your e-mail package. After you send the e-mail message to shareware@kagi.com, Kagi sends me a notice that you have paid and then I send you the registration code to enable the other features of the program. You can also fax them at the numbers on the form. Sorry, but you cannot presently send the registration fee directly to me as I am on temporary assignment in Switzerland and exchanging currencies is more hassle than it is worth for these amounts. Registering - Compuserve Another system that works well is the shareware registration service offered by Compuserve. In CIS, type GO SWREG, enter the code 11731 for NamePrinter and follow the instructions. They will notify me that you have registered and I will then send you the registration code.
