LifeKeeper.pkg A utility for keeping track of life points in a Magic duel. QQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQSigh Man, you just can't get ahead. After proudly releasing LifeKeeper v1.0, one of my first Newton programs, I visited ftp.amug.org a few short months later to see that there was another Magic life-point utility on the market. Released by Ben Gottlieb, one of the best Newton programmers around. It was freeware. Of course, Magic is pretty popular, and it was only a matter of time. I had a choice: I could either call my therapist and book a room at Bellevue, or write an update. I opted for both. This is the result of the latter effort. QQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQWhy use a Newton to do that? The Technomancer does not ask why. Mishra and Urza would understand. QQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQInstalling You can install this using the Newton Connection Kit, Newton Backup Utility, or another package utility (such as LunaTech Research's PDA Package Downloader). After installing on your Newton, click on its icon. You'll be presented with a window that probably has your name across the top, and 20 life points to start. Poison is set to zero. QQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQUsing LifeKeeper During play, when you take damage or heal it, tap on the place that you want to increase or decrease. For example, to reduce your life points by 3, tap three times on the bottom half of the units place (the one all the way to the right). If you cast a ten-point Stream Of Life, tap once on the upper half of the tens digit. (This works even if the tens digit is zero and isn't displayed at the moment.) Simple, eh? The counter has a range of -999 to +999. (If you find that this is not enough, you must be playing one of those Library of Leng/Ivory Tower decks.) Poison works similarly, except that its range is 0 to 99. Acting as a divider, your name is on a grey line. When you add a player, the name is blank. If you've added other players, you may tap on the diamond symbol and choose one; you may also edit your list of names. The RResetS button sets all of the counters to the initial values you set under Rpreferences.S The clock button acts in the usual manner; so does the close box. The "i" button allows setting preferences and displays the credits. Finally, the up/down arrow button will either add or remove a player. You can have a minimum of one and a maximum that depends on the screen size. In landscape orientation, two players is the maximum. In portrait orientation, you can fit four in, although it's a tight squeeze. In diagonal orientation, only one player will fit. QQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQPreferences Using this feature, you may set the starting values for life and poison. QQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQEdit This option displays a line on which you may write a new name. If you do, a button labelled RAddS appears. Tap it to add the new name to your list. Alternately, you may tap on the diamond to fill a name in automatically. The button will now read "Remove." Tapping it will remove the name from your list. By the way, the list (and some other important information) is saved in a soup called RLifeKeeper:StJS which you can delete if you decide not to keep LifeKeeper. QQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQShareware fee If you decide to keep LifeKeeper for longer than (let's say) a month, you ought to pay the shareware fee: one booster pack. What does this mean? Well, if you think LifeKeeper might come in handy once in a great while, send me a Fallen Empires* booster. Hey! Fifty cents plus postage! If it really makes your games easier, send an Ice Age*, Mirage*, or 4E* booster. If you find that you haven't lost a game since you started using LifeKeeper, well, an Arabian Nights* booster wouldn't be unwelcome! In other words, whatever you think fair, and whatever you have available. Naturally, if you don't use LifeKeeper at all, delete it from your collection and don't send me a thing. Whatever you do, I'd like to get eMail about your likes and dislikes concerning the program. (Oh, and incidentally, NetRunner* boosters are also welcome!) QQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQDistribution LifeKeeper may be distributed freely, as long as [1] this ReadMe file is included and [2] no fee is charged for its distribution. Online services which charge a reasonable hourly rate but do not charge for downloads may place it in their libraries. Distributors of CD-ROMs and other software libraries may include it if prior permission is given; write to the author for details. The author has also released, or will release, a number of other Magic-related NewtonThings as well as other small but useful pieces of shareware and freeware. They're uploaded regularly to the usual sites.
