What is Scratch Back?

Scratch Back is a minimalist backdrop application that still allows you to write, draw, and scribble.

Requirements

------------

Scratch Back is available for Newton OS 2.0 and 2.1. It has been tested on a MessagePad 2000, eMate 300, and MessagePad 130. No testing on a MessagePad 120 has been done, but no foreseeable problems exist at this time.



Installation

------------

Install ScratchBack.pkg as you would with other Newton software, by downloading it to your device using the Newton Connection Utilities, Newton Backup Utility, Newton Package Installer, or other package installation utility. Scratch Back will install an icon into the Extras Drawer.



Select Back Scratch by holding the pen down on the icon. Tap on the routing button (looks like a small envelope) and select Make Backdrop.



Back Scratch must be installed on the internal store for it to be accepted as the backdrop application.



Scratch Pad

-----------

You may use the blank area of the screen to draw, write, or scribble. The recognition settings are controlled by the Recognition Toggle button.



Warning: Anything on the scratch pad will disappear if the Newton is reset. Do not store permanent information here.



Tap on the Save button to save the Scratch Pad to the Notes application.



Tap on the Clear button to clear the Scratch Pad. If you accidentally tap Clear, you may tap Undo to undo the clear.



Note: The more writing or drawings on the Scratch Pad, the more heap Scratch Back uses. You may want to clear the Scratch Pad to make more heap available.



Backdrop buttons

When you install backdrop buttons, they will be automatically installed on the status bar. See the instructions for each backdrop button on how to use them.



Shareware

---------

Scratch Back is shareware. When unregistered, Scratch Back will work with no restrictions for 30 days. After that and until it is registered, Scratch Back will wait a 5 seconds delay and a reminder will appear 1) each time it is opened, 2) each time a backdrop button is added, and 3) each time the Save button is tapped.

Registration

------------

Once your payment is cleared, we will send you a validation code by email (or postal mail). Tap on the Info button (i). Choose About. Tap on Register. Make sure the name is correct and enter the validation code (all lowercase letters). Tap Validate.



About Owner Card-based Registration

-----------------------------------

Scratch Back uses Owner Card registration. This requires that your registered name appears on the active Owner Card.



If you do temporarily switch to another Owner Card, Scratch Back will give you a peaceful grace period to return to the registered Owner Card. If you do not switch to the original Owner Card within the grace period, Scratch Back will then give you warnings on each use. However, once you do return to the original Owner Card and use Scratch Back, the grace period will be reset.



NewtonID

--------

Scratch Back is NewtonID aware, and will use it if it is present on your Newton device. If you later remove the NewtonID user name, Scratch Back will use the Owner Card.



NewtonID is an initiative proposed by Foundation Systems that provides a single stable user name to a Newton device. It requires that you install it in order to set your NewtonID user name. Once it is set, however, the software is not required and may be removed.
