MELBOURNE, AUSTRALIA 1st May 1996 Announcing the release of: eNotes version 1.6b1 by Eclipse The latest version of the fully featured Internet email client for Apple Newton personal digital assistants. WHAT IS ENOTES? eNotes is a program for your Newton MessagePad that can connect to a UNIX host via modem or serial line and send or receive Internet mail. It also provides a nice interface for reading, sending and organising your mail. FEATURES + Simple login scripting for connecting to your internet service provider + Clear and easy to use interface + Smart text wrapping to overcome the Newton's small screen width + Full threading of email items with the same subjects + Runs at up to 57,600 bps with MNP error correction + Works with GSM mobile phones with the appropriate hardware connectors In short it's the most functional email system for handheld computers today. WHAT DO I NEED TO RUN ENOTES? - An Apple Newton MessagePad 100, 110, 120 or 130 - About 150K free memory - A modem or a serial connection to a UNIX host which runs POP3 and SMTP servers - A shell account on that host eNotes does NOT currently support SLIP or PPP connections. Apple should release TCP/IP capabilities for the Newton some time in 1996, but until then shell accounts will be all that eNotes supports. DOES ENOTES COST ANYTHING? Yes! This version of eNotes will allow you to send and receive a total of 250 messages. If you wish to unlock it for continued use, you must pay the US$50 registration fee. This system ensures that you will not pay for eNotes if it doesn't work for you, or even if you just don't like it. It also ensures that we get something back for all the work we've put into this product. We think that $50 is quite a small price to pay, and the money will help us continue to support and improve eNotes for you. As of this version we also have a student price of $30. To take advantage of this you will need to send us your registration by mail along with a copy of some evidence that you are currently studying, such as a current student card or enrolment record. If you are a resident of Australia, you may register eNotes for the discounted price of AUS$50. WHAT DO I GET FOR MY FIFTY BUCKS? You get a code that unlocks eNotes and allows you to continue using it on a single Newton. You will get notified of upgrades and other relevant information by e-mail. You will receive free bug fixes and patches for version 1.6. If you have a Newton with OS 2.0 then you will receive the new version 2.0 of eNotes when it is complete. This version will be smaller, faster and better integrated with the new operating system. WHAT IF I CAN'T GET IT WORKING? If you've read the manual ("manual.txt") and you still can't get it working, then send us some e-mail at enotes@pobox.com - we'll help you if the problem is something that can be solved with the current version of eNotes, and we'll take your problem into account for the next version of eNotes if we can't fix it straight away. OK, IT'S WORKING AND I LIKE IT. HOW DO I KEEP USING IT? You will need to know your eNotes serial number. To find this out open eNotes, tap the "i" button at the bottom of the screen, choose "About" and then press the "Register" button in the about box.
