Paging Transport for Newton 2.0 is shareware, $10.00 US It can send and receive alpha text messages via the Socket PageCard (pager) and any of a variety of Newton compatible modems, including cellular and landline based PC Card modems. This is an extension that installs a communications transport which can be used with most paging services (SkyTel, MobileComm, etc..) using Telecator Access Protocol (TAP). It can also read messages from the Socket Communications PageCard. Some of the other features include: 1) The ability to poll the pager for new messages. 2) A backdrop application button (in the status bar) for easy access to checking your messages on the pager. 3) CardFile (Names) lookup. When a message comes in with just a phone number, the number is matched against phone number combinations found in the Names soup. If a match is found, useful information from the Names entry is added to the message and displayed. 4) Page sending and receiving. This transport will allow you to send text messages from any application that 1) has an Action (Routing) button, and 2) has text as a dataType for routing purposes (Names, Notes, Dates, etc.. all do). The most common application to use is Notes. To send a page to someone: write something on the Notepad (make sure the text is recognized) then tap the Action button, and select "Page", etc.. To read pages from your Socket PageCard: insert the pager card into the PCMCIA slot, then go to the InBox application from the extras drawer. Tap the receive button and select "Page" from the menu. Or if you've checked the "Install Notepad access button" item on the prefs dialog, tap the envelope icon at in the status bar of the backdrop application. You can modify some of the PageCard settings in the In/OutBox prefs entry for the paging transport. Tap the [i] button in the lower left hand corner of the In/OutBox window, then select "Page" from the menu.
