What is it? 

----------- 

TekIO is a "faceless" (no icon appears in the extras drawer) application 

that facilitates text import/export via the serial port for the Notepad 

application.  It can transfer text to any type of host computer, not just 

Macs.  



Usage 

------



Exporting text.



	1) connect the serial cable.

	 

	   The cable must be a "Mac Modem" cable with a NULL modem attachment or 

	   a "Mac to Epson comapatable printer" cable that can be purchased at

	   your favorite computer store that carries Mac stuff. 



	2) startup the receiving software on the host.

	  

		This can be any software that can read text from the serial port.  

		Examples are: Zterm on the Mac, cat on UNIX, Procomm for DOS/Windows,

		... whatever can read text from a serial port. 



	3) select "Text out" in the Notepad's Action menu.

		The text portion of the current note will be dumped down the serial

		port and captured by the host computer.



Importing text.



	1) connect the serial cable. 

	

	2) click on "Text in" in the Notepad's Action menu. 

	   (TekIO will wait for about 5 seconds for data to start

	    flowing, if none arrives it will close the connection) 

	    

	3) start sending text from the host.

	

	4) TekIO automatically stores the note after the connection is 

	   idle for more than a second.



Notes 

----- 

The serial port parameters are not configurable; they are

9600-N-8-1 with software flow control.  Although I have tried hard to prevent

it, TekIO may conflict with other Newton applications that hack the 

Notepad's Action Menu.  TekIO will play the "crumple" sound after it finishes 

importing/exporting text and is closing the connection. Don't send large 

( > 4kbyte ) text files, they seem to break the Notepad application.





This is a demo version of TekIO.  After each transfer a Notification 

slip will appear stating that it is a demo version and that you should

read this file to find out how to order the "real" version.  After 

transferring about 15 notes TekIO wilI display a notification slip 

stating that the demo has expired instead of transferring any data. 

 

By sending a registration fee of $10 to the address below you will 

receive a version of TekIO that will transfer an indefinite number 

of notes and receive upgrades/fixes of TekIO as they become available.
