Memo Fax The easy to use memo faxer for Newton Platforms by Tony Pitman Main List Screen This is a list of the memos that you have entered. The first time you start Memo Fax or after having removed all Memo Fax data, this list will be empty. To select one of the memos for editing and/or faxing, just tap on the name of the memo. If you have more than the number of memos that will fit on the screen at one time, use the up and down arrows at the bottom of the Newton screen to scroll the list up and down. New The new button starts a new Memo Fax. Remove All This button asks you to confirm that you wish to remove all of the Memo Fax data in your Newton stores. Be careful, undo is NOT supported here. One you confirm to remove all data it is gone unless you re-enter it. Memo Fax Main Screen Title The title at the top of the Memo Fax form is the same as the title that will appear in the list on the main screen and also in the Newton Out box when you send a memo as a fax. You can make changes to the title by tapping on the title area. An entry area will appear that allows you to enter/edit the title. From This button brings up the name and number selection form. See below for details on using this form. The name that you enter in this selection form will appear next to the from button after you have closed the selection form. To This button also brings up the name and number selection form. Again see below for details on using this form. The name that you enter will appear next to the To button after you have closed the selection form. Date This button brings up an area to enter the date of the memo. If you douple tap in this entry area you will get the date keyboard and not the normal keyboard. Subject This button brings up an area to enter the subject of the memo. If you douple tap in this entry area you will get the normal keyboard. Memo This button scrolls the memo form up half of the screen and brings up the normal keyboard. This allows for easier entry of the memo body text because the area that you write in is at the top of the screen and the keyboard will never be over the area you are entering text into. To put the form back to normal and close the keyboard, simply use the close button on the keyboard. This will put the form back to its normal position. You can use the up and down scroll arrows at the bottom up of Newton screen to scroll the memo text entry area. From/To Name and Number Selection Form This form has two entry areas. One is for the name and the other is for the number. You can write in these areas and double tap to bring up the normal keyboard. From User Prefs This button is used to bring the name that is entered in your user preferences. Use Name / Use Company These two radio buttons are used to determine what name will be used. These radio buttons apply to both the from user preferences and the name list. Name List This list is built from you name card file. It is sorted on whatever each name in your name card is sorted on. If only a name is available, that is all that is shown. If only a company is available, again that is all that is shown. If both are available then both are shown. The up and down scroll arrows at the bottom of the Newton screen are active and can be used to scroll the list. To choose a name from the list, simple tap on it. You will notice that the name and fax number (if there is one) will appear in the name and number boxes at the top of the screen. Alphabet Slider Bar As you move or tap in the slider bar area you will see a letter of the alphabet appear to the right of the slider bar. When you pick up your styles from the slider bar, whatever letter is to the right of the slider bar will determine where in the name card list you will be. If you move the slider to the letter P, then the list will start with the first name card who's sort key starts will a P. You can combine the use of this slider bar with the scroll arrows to find the name that you are looking for. Keep in mind the Use Name and Use Company radio button settings. If the wrong one is set at the time you choose the name, simply pick the other setting and choose the name again. Close Use the close box to close the selection form. Action Button Fax Memo Selecting fax memo pulls up the standard fax slip with an additional slip just below it. This additional slip is used to help set the fax number in the normal fax slip. If a number appears in the Fax Number entry area, it is the number that was chosen along with the To name. If this entry area is blank it is because the name card file you chose did not have a fax number and you also did not enter one in the Number entry area on the name selection form. Update This button is used to copy whatever number is in the Fax Number entry area into the Fax # entry area of the normal fax slip. Add 011 This button is used to add a 011 to the front of whatever number is entered in the Fax Number entry area. If a 1 or 001 is already there then the 011 REPLACES it. Add 001 This button is used to add a 001 to the front of whatever number is entered in the Fax Number entry area. If a 1 or 011 is already there then the 001 REPLACES it. Add 1 This button is used to add a 1 to the front of whatever number is entered in the Fax Number entry area. If a 001 or 011 is already there then the 1 REPLACES it. It would be most efficient to enter all numbers in your name card file with the area code. This way you would simply need to press one button on the slip depending on if you are out of the area code, out of the country or the number is from another country. If it turns out that you are in the same area code then all you have to do is scrub out the area code. Scrubbing is a lot easier than trying to insert. (I guess destroying is always easier than creating.) Once you have gotten the number the way you want it simply tap on the Update button and the number will be copied to the Fax # area of the normal fax slip. You will notice that Memo Fax does not copy the name into the Name area of the normal fax slip. This is because if you have a lot of names in your name card file, your Newton will take a long time to look up this name. Since this is a quick memo and I would not recommend using a cover sheet, looking up the name does not serve any purpose. It will simply slow you down. Delete Memo Selecting delete from the action button menu will delete the current memo. I hope you like my use of the delete animation. This concludes the instructions for using Memo Fax. I hope it turns out to be very useful to you.
