DOSterm A CTTY device for DOS machines, using a MessagePad. MS-DOS comes with a program called CTTY, which allows you to control a PC via the serial port. This Newton application is a terminal application that uses this feature. Plug the Newton into the serial port via a Null modem cable and enter the following commands into DOS, MODE COM1:1200,N,8,1 CTTY COM1: this will set up the serial port for 1200 baud and switch input and output throught it. The Newton can then issue commands and display the results. Pure Novelty value. It does actually work and it is amazing to see a DOS directory listing in the Newton screen. J Limits. Not every application uses DOS to for Input and Output so some / many things end up bypassing this application and require the original screen and keyboard, while some use the original screen and get input from the Newton. As I said this application has some usefulness but it is designed mainly for the Novelty value. Connect up a PC and hide it under a desk, people may be silly enough to think that you have a 500 Meg Hard drive in your Newton, may be notI Features % A text buffer stores all incoming text until it is cleared. This text can be exported to the NotePad and reused. Save copies of AUTOEXEC and CONFIG files for later use, faxing, printing, etc. % Wide screen, 800 pixels wide and can be scrolled. If you use the Monaco font then the screen is 24 lines high, else it is 20 lines high. % Using this may be faster than a keyboard for controlling disk operations. % It's something that makes my A$1200 investment in the Newton Tool Kit seem worthwhile. (I believed the Hype). Hint. Clearing both the Text Buffer and the Screen makes this App work faster. Sorry 'bouts. Sorry 'bout the font that is used when you do export things to the NotePad. ) 1995 Paul B Jones Shareware $10, includes a disk of other shareware if you toss in a stamp.
