The new plan begins February 1, and affects calls made from 50 different cities. "We've been somewhat of a stealth wireless company, but now we're about to emerge," says Nextel's CEO. "By the end of this year our second-generation digital network will address 70% of the U.S. population and 85% by next year." The company has already spent $1.85 billion to construct its digital network and plans to channel $2 billion more into efforts to secure nationwide coverage. (Wall Street Journal 14 Jan 97 B1) ** BLANK SLATE ** Michael Kinsley, the editor of "Slate," a Microsoft-supported Web-based political/cultural magazine, has abandoned plans to charge readers who visit its Web page. "Even in our headiest moments, we couldn't convince ourselves that people lust for political and cultural commentary the way they lust for sex and money," says Kinsley, who still plans to use e-mail to deliver a printable version of the magazine for $70 a year. (Atlanta Journal-Constitution 14 Jan 96 B5) ** FBI OFFERS NEW PROPOSAL FOR DIGITAL WIRETAPS ** The Federal Bureau of Investigation has released for public comment a new proposal for facilitating tapping of digital phone calls by law enforcement officials armed with court orders. Under the new proposal, which is significantly more modest than what the Bureau had asked for in a earlier plan, law enforcement officials would operate under a formula in which (for example) 523 phone lines could be monitored simultaneously in a place such as Manhattan. Privacy advocates oppose the FBI's plan as an unacceptable expansion of electronic surveillance. (New York Times 15 Jan 97 A8) ** SUIT SEEKS $20 MILLION FROM AOL FOR BUSY SIGNALS ** Five California men have brought a class-action suit for negligence and consumer fraud against America Online, charging in a Los Angeles Superior Court that AOL introduced flat-fee pricing that increased activity well beyond what it was prepared to handle, so that subscribers encountered "busy and unavailable phone lines and/or inaccessible computer equipment." (Atlanta Journal-Constitution 15 Jan 97 B6) ** JUST SAY NO TO CYBERTAXES ** Representative Christopher Cox (R-Calif.) and Senator Ron Wyden (D-Ore.) plan to propose a moratorium on any new federal, state or local taxes on electronic commerce. The Cox-Wyden bill calls on the Clinton Administration to develop a comprehensive Internet policy. (Business Week 20 Jan 97 p41) ** OUR LOVE AFFAIR WITH E-MAIL ** Forrester Researcher says 15% of the U.S. population now uses e-mail, up >from 2% in 1992. And they predict that within five years, that number will rise to about 50%. "It's the most popular online activity," says a Forrester analyst. "Growth will be fueled by the increase in home PC penetration and the growth of Internet access in corporations. Furthermore, the emergence of personalized services and tools that let ordinary people combine graphics and attachments will help make e-mail a preferred means of communication." (Investor's Business Daily 15 Jan 97 A6) ** CHILLIER CHIPS ** Researchers at the Georgia Institute of Technology are using the concept behind how smoke rings are produced to devise a system for keeping computer chips cool. The device is simple: it consists of a box with one flexible wall and a series of holes in the opposite wall; by vibrating the flexible wall at the proper frequency, cooling jets of air puff out of the holes. The boxes are as small as 100 microns in diameter, and because the microjets are highly directional, they can be pointed where needed. In one test, the researchers were able to boost the power of an array of chips by 150%, with no increase in temperature. (Scientific American Jan 97 p40) ** "PUSH" CHANNEL FILTERS FOR INFO OVERLOAD ** Verity Inc. and Tierra Communications have developed products that filter data channels "pushed" to Web users from content-delivery companies. Verity's product will expand its search engine's agent technology to allow users to fine-tune the information they receive by creating a profile for what they want to receive off of a Web site's channel. Tierra is developing a server-based model of its Highlights browser utility, which monitors Web content and matches users' profiles on a dynamic basis. "Verity and Tierra both have pieces of the puzzle. Verity has filtering and back-end expertise, and Tierra has a nice client with a channel-type metaphor that works great with browsers," says a Forrester Research analyst. (InfoWorld Electric 10 Jan 97) INNOVATION, 13Jan97 ------------------- ** TRENDS: HIGH-TECH HOTELS JUST AROUND THE CORNER ** The hotel of the future is closer than you think, thanks to the increasingly high-tech needs of business travelers who comprise the core of the hotel industry. Rather than standing in line to check in, Hilton Hotels is currently testing a system on certain Japan Airlines and United Airlines flights that distributes room keys to hotel guests while still aloft. Other hotel chains are considering a system that would allow travelers to select their rooms online before they leave, and use their credit cards as their room keys when they arrive. The Hyatt chain already has 18 "Touch and Go" kiosks operational, allowing guests to check in via ATM-style machines, using their credit cards to acquire their room keys. The kiosk check-in takes about 45 seconds from start to finish, as opposed to two to three minutes minimum at an uncrowded reservations desk. "Within five years, every hotel will have some kind of automated way of checking in," says a Choice Hotels International VP. Rooms will change, too: more hotels are installing some kind of high-speed Internet and e-mail access for travelers who want to leave their laptops at home. Hilton is launching a test of a system that uses a keyboard linked to the TV set: "Everything in the guest room will eventually revolve around the TV, such as the videoconferencing of phone calls and all Internet capabilities," says Hilton's senior VP for marketing. "Within two to 10 years, 90% of hotel rooms will have a system like this," says a hotel computer system provider. (Investor's Business Daily 7 Jan 97 A1) ** STRATEGIES: FELLOW CONSUMERS, FELLOW TRIBESMEN ** "Postmodernism," which derives from the work of French thinkers like Jacques Derrida, Michel Foucault, and other, was first used in architecture in the 1960s to describe the break with the kind of modern functional and rational thinking (modernism) that emphasized values such as reason, order and progress. In contrast, the hallmarks of postmodernist thought have been fragmentation, ambiguity and distrust of abstraction and generalization. Does postmodernism have anything to say to marketing managers? Well, marketing people will feel comfortable with the idea that "reality has collapsed and has become exclusively image" or the idea that consumers no longer merely consume products but also "consume the symbolic meaning of those products"; but what they may have to learn is that a postmodern image is not something fixed or strictly controllable, because a key manifestation of postmodernism is a resistance to images imposed by the marketing system and an insistence on personal participation, which means that consumers rebel against planned functions and images of products. "So the images and uses of products cannot be controlled entirely by the producer. The consumer exercises the freedom to create new meanings for goods through his own experience of everyday life." What kind of new meanings? In today's fragmented world, today's consumers are on the lookout for anything that can united them in a community with others: a site, an emblem, the support of a ritual of integration, or of recognition. Or all of the above ... if they belong to something like HOG (the Harley Owners Group of individuals who ride Harley-Davis motorcycles and enjoy Harley's consumer commitment to provide a full range of clothing, accessories, and services). The successful service provider will understand that "postmodern people are looking for products and services that not only enable them to be freer but can also link them to a tribe ... through interactive and emotional experiences of joint creation of meaning." (Bernard Cova, "The Postmodern Explained To Managers: Implications For Marketing," Business Horizons Nov/Dec 96 p15) ** INNOVATIONS: THIS WALLET KEEPS YOUR HABITS IN CHECK ** Personal Computer Improvement Systems (PICS) has developed two wallet-sized computers that can help you keep those New Year's resolutions to quit smoking or lose weight. Developed under grants from the National Institute of Health, the DietMate is a $197.50 gadget that provides ongoing information about everything that goes in your mouth -- caloric content, nutritional value, and how much exercise you'll have to do to burn it off. The $89.95 LifeSign computer helps smokers gradually withdraw from cigarettes by developing a customized program that signals smokers when to have a cigarette. The machine gradually lengthens the time between signals until the smoker quits.
