Administrivia Top News -------- ** MP2100 HAS ERRORS ** A Newton Developer reports that Apple knows about a bug in the Newton OS that causes MP2100s to randomly generate a -10061 error message. There is no work around available, and Apple has stated in a conference call with developers that the have no plans to fix this problem. If you 'Think Different' please contact Mark Rabkin at: rabkin@newton.apple.com and let Apple know that you "demand" this bug get fixed ASAP. [EDITOR'S NOTE] -- On a less than positive note, several former Newton developers and technical support individuals have sent me private email about the -10061 error messages on the MP2100. They are all of the opinion that while the bug is fixable, that Apple doesn't have the in-house talent to fix the problem. This solution could be email based. Nicholas Hong would like to find a way to create a link between the Newton and digital cameras other than the Agfa digital camera like for Apple's QuickTake 200. Glenn Eisen would like a complete sunrise, sunset moonrise, tides, moonset & moonphase Newton utility. Stephen Hryncewicz thinks the Newton community needs a desktop Newton emulator like the Macintosh Copilot for PalmPilot OS. Christopher Sowada is interested in a solution that would make it possible to beam data back and forth with Newton devices and the recently announced PalmPilot III. Conrad Gempf is looking for a "time & date-specific and persistent alarm to items in the NotePad". Sticky Notes does this but it takes over 300K on his MP120 which is too much. He has checked out PhoneMemo which is close but doesn't have persistent alarms. Send Conrad email if you have a solution, or know of a programmer interested in working on this idea. Darl Singh is looking of a keyboard shortcuts utility for the MP130 units. Especially: cut, paste, and jump to the end of the next word. Van Rooyen Leslie thinks it would be cool to build a Newton utility that would make it possible to display interactive handwriting solutions to LCD overhead projectors. Edupage, 09Mar98 thru 15Mar98 ----------------------------- ** NEARLY HALF OF U.S. HOMES OWN A PC ** Computer Intelligence reports that more than 45% of U.S. homes now own personal computers, up from 40% in 1996. As might be expected, households with the highest incomes and those with children are more likely to be PC owners: 80% of homes with annual incomes of $100,000 or more own PCs, compared with 25% of homes with income under $30,000; and 60% of families with children own PCs, compared with 38% of childless households. (Wall Street Journal 10 Mar 98) ** BOOK PARTY ** Two major booksellers -- Borders Group and the German media conglomerate Bertelsmann AG -- are preparing to engage in direct competition with Amazon and Barnes & Noble for the online bookbuyer's purchasing dollar. Amazon founder and chief executive Jeff Bezos claims not to be too concerned: "I'm paranoid about Barnes & Noble's purchasing power, and I'm paranoid of Bertelsmann's marketing skills, extensive customer base and their publishing background. Our advantage is that we know more about e-commerce than anybody else. We've been doing it longer, and we've already leveled the playing field." Publishers are happy with the tendency of electronic customers to prefer older "backlist" titles (such as those written by many of the Edupage honorary subscribers!) to current best-selling authors; for example, aided by electronic search engines, Amazon customers bought at least one copy of 90% of the Penguin Group's backlist. (New York Times 9 Mar 98) ** ONLINE NEWS PARTNERSHIP BREAKS THE CONNECTION ** Unable to agree on a direction for the business, a consortium of nine major newspapers formed to make the publications available on the Internet is dissolving. Called New Century Network, the group included Advance Publications, Cox Newspapers, Gannett, Hearst Knight Ridder, New York Times Co., Times-Mirror, Tribune Co., and the Washington Post. (USA Today 10 Mar 98) ** JAVA -- WITH ONE TEASPOON OF MICROSOFT ** In a move that will anger Sun, Microsoft has released new programming tools to allow software developers to write Windows applications in Microsoft's version of Java, the computer language developed by Sun. Java was originally conceived as a language that could allow software to run on all computer platforms. Sun is suing Microsoft for allegedly misappropriating the language by creating a version that will run exclusively on computers using Microsoft's Windows operating systems. (AP 11 Mar 98) ** DIGITAL STRONGARM COULD PROVE INTEL'S SECRET WEAPON ** As part of the settlement last year between Digital Equipment Corp. and Intel, Intel received licensing rights not only to Digital's well-known Alpha chip, but also to a more obscure family of Digital chips -- the StrongARM. StrongARM, which may turn out to be the hidden gem in the deal, is a high-speed processor that runs at very low power, making it ideal for use in battery-powered portable devices, such as palmtop computers. The chip is "an absolute technical tour de force," says an analyst with consulting firm MicroDesign Resources. "For $29 to $49, you get performance that rivals a Pentium at about one-tenth the price. And it uses one-tenth the electricity... I think it's going to scare a lot of the other chip companies. Now Intel is armed to enter the consumer electronics industry." (Investor's Business Daily 12 Mar 98) ** SOFTWARE PIRACY ** A Decima Research survey released by the Canadian Alliance Against Software Theft found that one in five Canadians pirates software, although fewer than 1% do so frequently. Only 20% of respondents said they would report someone for illegally copying software, and almost half view stealing a chocolate bar as worse than pirating software. The CAAST estimates piracy costs between $357- and $500-million annually, but courts have been unwilling to award damages unless software makers can prove exactly how much they lost, which is difficult to do since detailed records are rare at illegal software shops. Changes to the Copyright Act easing that burden of proof are expected to be proclaimed by the end of April, providing tougher civil penalties of up to $20,000 for each program illegally copied. (Toronto Globe & Mail 13 Mar 98) INNOVATION, 09Mar98 ------------------- ** TRENDS: MAGAZINES ABOUT THE NET: CONSUMERS SAY NO, MANAGERS SAY YES ** Most of the consumer magazines designed to explain the Internet died in 1997 or morphed into Web-based publications. Prayers for the Dead may be said for NetGuide, The Net, Internet Underground, The Web, Internet Shopper, Web Developer, Website, Internetwork, and Web Server. Industry analyst Matt Boyle of Cowles/Simba Information says: "What we saw was the death of a category. The Internet consumer magazines just folded." Yes, but other computer magazines -- ones aimed at business people -- enjoyed a 12.1% increase to $3 billion in advertising and circulation revenue. Boyle explains: "This speaks to the convergence of business and technology issues. It used to be this was the reading corner for tech geeks. Now CEOs, CFOs, and CIOs are all reading" publications of this kind. (New York Times 6 Mar 98) ** STRATEGIES: DON'T JUST MAKE IT BETTER, MAKE IT DIFFERENT ** Strategos chairman and London Business School professor Gary Hamel says that strategic innovations are successful because they are deliberately subversive, and that new wealth is created not by prophets but by heretics. Successful innovators are the ones "who not only challenge the way an existing business runs but offer an entirely new way of thinking about an industry." They're not satisfied with just improving things, they want to change them; they don't just want something better, they want something entirely different. A poster-boy for this kind of heretical thinking is Virgin Atlantic president Richard Branson, who completely rethought whole industries: airlines, music, banking, soft drinks. In all cases he was an outsider, and in all cases a heretic. "The one thing Mr. Branson's ventures all have in common is that the services they sell and the ways they do business break all the established rules of their industry." With the Virgin Atlantic model in mind, Hamel is distinctly unimpressed (so far) by Compaq's acquisition of Digital Equipment Corporation, because "it does not represent the sort of unorthodox vision that characterized Compaq's success to date. Compaq has grown by being among the computer industry's leading subversives, living each year dangerously. If this merger signals a retreat to safety, it will be remembered not as the birth of a new industrial star, but as the flaring of a dying one." (Gary Hamel, "Will Merger With DEC Be Compaq's Last Hurrah?" Wall Street Journal 2 Mar 98) ** INNOVATIONS: MOVING MICRONS WITH MICRO-CILIA ** Scientists working with microelectromechanical systems (MEMS) describe a world where tiny, very smart machines could cruise through blood veins and dispense cancer-fighting medication directly into the tumor, or drip insulin into the bloodstream whenever the blood sugar count begins to rise. To build these tiny devices, an engineer at Hewlett-Packard has proposed using mechanical cilia that can be programmed to sort things by size and shape, bring the right parts together, turn or align them correctly, and present the assembled pieces for one final joining operation. The Intelligent Motion Surface, as it's called, is a flat, smart, ciliated surface that researchers have found could have other uses as well, such as microscopic valves for extremely accurate printers that move the paper through the printer by shooting jets of air; and microflaps covering the wings and fuselage of aircraft to push a thin layer of air over the surfaces, accomplishing the same effect as bigger flaps.
