The 'hoax' post via Deja News was falsely attributed to Flash Sheridan who has denied posting the message. The person most likely responsible for this post is the USENET newsgroup comp.sys.newton.misc 'troll' named "Dan Villalanti ". ** TWO EMATE RUMORS ** Rumors are cropping up that Apple has plans to cut the online price of their eMate 300 devices in the near future to under US$700. Demos of the next generation eMate devices are apparently happening in greater frequency. An interesting rumor is that some sort of 'QuickTime' is running on this next generation eMate, along with some flavor of Java. Opinions tend to run high for a possible shipping product in Q1'98. ** ANOTHER EXAMPLE FOR THE NEED TO THINK DIFFERENT ** The following is a message from David Miller in regards to our article "NEWTON SUPPORT GROUP NEEDS TO THINK DIFFERENT" in the last issue of NewtNews -- I've been on backorder for a hinge cover since Friday, June 20 (case number 941431). Barb at Apple Support told me I couldn't order one, since there was no part number, because the manufacturer was using all available capacity to keep up with the demand for complete MPs and could not devote resources to producing spare parts. I called back on August 20, but since my 12-digit support number had expired by that time, I had a heck of a time getting through. I was finally put in touch with Ken, who confirmed that they still had my case number on file, but told me that there was still not a part number available. When I told him how difficult it had been to get through, now that my 12-digit support number had expired, he assured me that I would be contacted when a part number becomes available. No need to worry. So I didn't. For two more months. Now comes the upgrade offer. Great! I called on November 7 and ordered an upgrade. The clerk--Tanya Brown--asked me whether my MP2K was in good working order. I said that it was, but added that my hinge cover was broken, and that I would like to have it replaced at the same time my MP was being upgraded. She told me that not only was it not possible to replace the hinge cover simultaneously with the upgrade, but also, if I sent in my MP for the upgrade, they just might send it back to be, because they can only accept MPs in good working order for the upgrade. I replied that I had a case number for the hinge cover, and that I had been on backorder since June. I mentioned that, at this point, I saw the hinge cover problem as Apple's, not as my own. She responded by asking me if I had called lately to see whether hinge covers were available now. I replied that it was very difficult for me to get through, now that my 12-digit number had expired. Yada, yada, yada. She sold me an upgrade, and the box arrived yesterday. But honestly, I don't know what to do at this point. Don't know how to get feedback about this situation to anyone at Apple who functions at a level higher than that of an answering machine! $-----------$------------$------------$------------$-----------$-----------$ From your armchair, find your favorite shows using your Newton. Benichou <100710.205@compuserve.com> at Dyna Publishing brings us a Newton news sighting in the Dec97 French edition of Cosmopolitan magazine. According to the Apple PR page in this issue, Apple will bring the eMate 300 to France in early 1998 with a French version of the Newton 2.1 OS. The price of the unit should be close to US$800. Greg Goodwin also caught a Newton related sighting in one of the classroom scenes in the new movie "Starship Troopers." One of the students clearly uses a MP110/120/130 pen to write and draw on a flat screen display. Christopher Sowada <103010.567@compuserve.com> notes that Apple eMate 300 was featured as one of the "Twelve Gizmos of Christmas" on page 120 of December's Playboy. Please include details of the Newton model and OS that you are using. ** MORE ON SYNCING WITH MP2K & CLARIS ORGANIZER 2.0 ** Thanks to Paul Kerr for this weeks tip: I'm using a MessagePad 2000 with OS 2.1. I've just tracked down and solved a gotcha with NCU's Synchronize feature: the default setup doesn't transfer email addresses from Contacts to the Newton. I've also enabled syncing associated URLs between the two. (CO2 can store URLs for contacts. If you want to do the same on your Newton, you can create a custom field for this within Names by tapping the Add button in Names, then selecting Custom in the popup menu. A list of custom field names appears. Enter the word URL into the one that opens. Tap the close box. Thereafter URL will appear in the Add popup menu.) If you're looking to move your Newton Names and other data into Claris Organizer 2.0 (CO2) for the first time, create a new file in CO2, then quit. If you're moving your CO2 data into a new Newton, just use the CO2 you've already got. In NCU select Synchronization Settings from the Edit menu. Launch NCU, dock from your Newton, select Synchronization Settings from the Edit menu. Set the CO2 file as the one to use for Dates, Names and To-Dos. Click on Names and click the Advanced Options button. If you're moving your Newton Names and other data into CO2, set Conflict Resolution to Newton wins. If you're moving your CO2 data into a new Newton, set Conflict Resolution to Computer wins. Click the Field Mappings button. Set the Email field in the Names column to synch with the Custom 1 field in the Claris Organizer 2.0 column. If you've setup a URL field in Names, set the URL field in the Names column to synch with the Custom 2 field in the Claris Organizer 2.0 column. Click OK as needed to close up the settings. Thereafter, when you synchronize, these important fields will be included. ** TIPS WANTED ** Please send me any tips, hints, goodies, interesting facts or ingenious ideas for future issues of this column to Roger Coleman . The new effort is being billed as a "logical extension" of the NetPC, which some industry insiders say has not been selling up to expectations. One analyst for Goldman Sachs & Co. notes that the new machine could give the Java NCs from Sun Microsystems stiff competition: "There is a lot of interest in a thin client that could still have a Windows desktop. This would co-opt NCs by providing Windows compatibility." Meanwhile, Novell CEO Eric Schmidt says: "What Microsoft and Intel did is they took the NC and they refined it into an NC plus all the applications you already use, a very clever marketing strategy. The thing missing in their strategy was... that the real problem with the NC and the personal computer as they exist today is in the back end, not the front end." (Computer Reseller News 22 Nov 97) ** LEARNING HOW WE LEARN ** The National Science Foundation's new Learning and Intelligent Systems initiative is aimed at determining how learning takes place and how technology can help that process along. Grants worth more than $22.5 million have been awarded to 28 institutions for research on how animals and babies learn from the environment around them, and how older humans learn theoretical concepts that have not been directly experienced and then transfer those concepts to situations outside the original learning context. The unifying theme of the Learning and Intelligent Systems project, says a UCLA researcher, "is the interaction between the structure of the brain's learning mechanisms and the structure of the data that support that learning." One NSF organizer says some research will also be directed at developing new technologies that will better measure prior knowledge, thereby providing a shortcut in retraining people for a changing workplace. (Los Angeles Times 24 Nov 97) ** NOT SO HELPFUL AT THE HELP DESK ** A temporary employee fired last Spring from the "help desk" of Forbes, the magazine publishing company, for "rude and abusive" behavior, has been charged by federal prosecutors for "a serious act of computer sabotage" that caused more than $100,000 damage to the company's computer system. If convicted, the man faces up to five years in prison for his act of revenge. (CyberTimes 25 Nov 97) ** POLICY FIGHT OVER USE OF UNIVERSITY COMPUTING RESOURCES ** Declaring that "it was the judgment of the people in computing services that it was an inappropriate use of computer services and a violation of the agreement that the students sign at the beginning of each year," the University of Pittsburgh has closed down a student-run Web site created to share tips about avoiding security problems with software. A university administrator asserts that the site violated a campus policy that computers may not be used for commercial purposes, but the student charges that the university is censoring him and says: "We didn't make a dime. We didn't ask for a dime. We didn't sell any advertising on it." Following his attempt to orchestrate an e-mail and telephone protest action from his supporters, the student was charged by the university with harassment, failure to comply with the request of a school official, and interference with the use of the university's judicial process. (AP 28 Nov 97) ** DYNAMIC ENCYCLOPEDIA ** Philosophy professors at Stanford University are developing The Stanford Encyclopedia of Philosophy < http://plato.stanford.edu >, which is designed so that the authors of articles contained in the compendium can update their subject matter as needed. The system then automatically alerts the editors, via e-mail, that new material has arrived, to be reviewed and made available to readers. Twelve editors and 120 scholars thus far have contributed to the encyclopedia, and the project's leader expects to have most entries completed within five years. The estimated buying power of the Y-ers -- those between the ages of 12 and 19 -- is $106 billion, and they have influence over another $100 billion to $200 billion, in terms of where their families vacation or even what automobiles they buy. Marketers would do well to latch onto this group now, says Lynn Christie, VP of publishing at Packaged Facts. The brand loyalties that teens develop now can influence their buying behavior for the next 50 years: "Marketing to teenagers is a high-stakes proposition. Those who get it right hope to ride the wave of one of the largest demographic groups ever to wash across the American landscape. Those who fail will have to play catch up." Her recommendations for marketing to today's teens? "One of the worst mistakes that a marketer can make is to pretend to be 'one of the gang.' Teens have phoniness sensors, and trying to be cool is not cool." Also, to appeal to their strong environmental and socially conscious awareness, she suggests that marketers should "be nice to Mother Nature, and don't be racist or sexist." (Entrepreneurial Edge Nov 97) ** STRATEGIES: WHAT BUSINESS ARE YOU IN? ** Because of the Internet, software company executives need to be sure they know what their real business is, because the Internet blurs distinctions between software, content, services and commerce. CD-ROM titles that seemed to make sense just a few years ago have been made irrelevant by Web sites that offer a richer, more compelling, interactive, up-to-date vehicle for the same information or service. So the question software designers need to ask is whether the industry their product serves is so big that someone will give away software just to encourage sales. Example: the Website GardenEscapes offers a Java applet that lets you design your own garden, by choosing from a long list of plants and figuring in a variety of local sunlight and climate conditions. Cost to the customer? Nothing. Benefit to GardenEscapes? Sales of garden supplies. Danger to software companies that had hoped to sell gardening software? Extinction. "Five years from now, are customers more likely to pay for software, services, or content? Or worse, will software such as yours be given away to drive someone else's sales?" Software companies can get into business real fast -- and go out real fast. (J. William Gurley, "When Software Is More Than Just Software," Fortune 8 Dec 97) ** INNOVATIONS: CLICK HERE FOR FEELING ** Silicon Valley-based Immersion has come up with a new handle on mouse technology -- the FEELit mouse. The touchy-feely mouse is used in conjunction with a special mouse pad that allows you to "bump" into the edges of the screen and "feel" each tiny button and icon. The product works with Windows 95 and Microsoft Internet Explorer software.
