The offending word was found in the sentence: "The new bill is more narrowly focused than the CDA, and is targeted strictly at impeding the flow of commercial pornography on the World Wide Web." (Of course, because of the same filtering software, some of you out there will never read this issue of Edupage to know why you were unable to read the last issue of Edupage. Oh well.) I guess NewtNews will also now be censored now. Oh, well. ** DOES THE NOW SOFTWARE BUY OUT MATTER FOR NEWTON USERS?!? ** Qualcomm has decided to purchase Now Software. Not sure if this has an impact on the Newton yet ... both companies in the past have released Newton solutions. Some more successful than others. ** DONATE YOUR OLD NEWTONS ** Stuart Ungar at Playful Productions, a non-profit organization that publishes a quarterly literary magazine for and by grade-school children called 'Word Dance,' is looking for old Newton MessagePads to be used by interns, volunteers, and in classrooms. The article includes several short Newton mentions in regards to bringing Newton, Inc. back to Apple, and the success of the eMate 300 in the education marketplace. ** INTERESTING PALMPILOT NEWS ** THE COMPUTISTS' COMMUNIQUE published on 13Nov97 (Vol. 7, No. 78) has a very interesting PalmPilot blurb. Here is a summary: When Palm Computing developed its PalmPilot electronic organizer, they had to find someone to manufacture it. Former partner Tandy/Radio Shack turned them down, since it had lost money on the Zoomer. Palm didn't approach Casio, Sharp, or HP, since all had competing products. Negotiations with a telecom company and a PC company broke down over who would control the technology. Finally U.S. Robotics showed interest. Palm was asking for a $5M investment to cover production, but accepted a counter offer of $45M in stock for the company. Early buyers were mostly tech-savvy men, 35-45 and making over $100K/year. They liked it and told others, creating holiday sales of 350K units. (Zoomer had only sold 10K the previous season.) This year there are over 200 companies creating add-on software or hardware. 3Com, which bought U.S. Robotics, has licensed the PalmPilot to IBM, which sells them as the IBM Workpad. Now 3Com is working on specialized devices for vertical markets such as inventory work, parcel delivery, and medical charts. "The first is in Upline Magazine's catalog has a section on planners. The section cover page has a photo of a person using what appears to be an MP120. "The second is in a TV commercial being run by local Baltimore radio station, Mix 106.5. The commercial has a really cool scene of live video running on what also looks like an MP120." ** HANDHELD MARKETING NEWS ** International Data Corp. (IDC) is predicting that smart phones will be a US$1.2 billion industry in Western Europe next year. Dataquest reports that during the first half of 1997 that the handheld marketplace shipped 1.4 million units, this is 'up' from the total shipments of 1.6 million during all of 1996. The PalmPilot has 66% of the market compared to 20% by Windows CE. Please include details of the Newton model and OS that you are using. ** THANKS FOR SYNC AND BACKUP TIPS! ** Thanks to the dozens of NewtNews readers who responded to the recent NCU syncing and backup tips feature. This is obviously a difficult, as yet unresolved area for MessagePad users. If anyone has any more hints or workarounds in this area, please pass them on to me and I shall pass them on through future columns. Any other ideas for future themed columns would also be welcomed! ** CONVERT SCRIBBLES TO TEXT TO SAVE MEMORY ** A couple of weeks ago I suggested always setting the handwriting recognition option to 'sketches' in order to prevent a MP120 trying to read what you write for fast handwritten entry. The only problem with this idea is that if you enter a large amount of un-converted text, you will quickly fill up the memory available in your Newton. To overcome this problem, convert the handwritten text into typed text which uses much less memory. (Double-tap handwritten text to convert it to type - you can convert whole pages at a time if you select it first). ** GREAT USES FOR A NEWTON PEN ** The pen supplied with all models of Newton is great for pressing the film rewind button on many models of compact 35mm camera, or the little hidden buttons that set most digital watches. Newton pens work much better than real ballpens because they don't gum up the little buttons with ink. However, be careful what you press with your Newton Pen, damaging the tip may cause damage to the Newton screen. ** TIPS WANTED ** Please send me any tips, hints, goodies, jokes, interesting facts or ingenious ideas for future issues of this column to Roger Coleman . NewtNews incorrectly attributed the publisher of Kevin's Reflex Newton software. This software is actually being distributed by Casady & Greene. ** SENDING A PKG TO YOUR DESKTOP SYSTEM VIA EMAIL ** Olivier Ozoux recently contributed the following suggestion/tidbit: You can use EnRoute email to install packages on your Newton if you send them as MIME attachments from your desktop. But did you know you can also use email to export packages back to the desktop? ** PKG DISTRIBUTION SITE NEEDED ** Trevor Lien would like to find an Internet server service that would accept posting of Mac .sit and .sea Newton pkg submissions and extract the compressed pkgs. Once decompressed, the pkgs (in their raw, native form) would be made available for download via Mac, PC, or Newton. ** META-DATA NAVIGATOR ** Jason Kulas writes: I'd like a Notes meta-data navigator (sort of an enhanced Find) that will give some functionality like having a mini project-planner/organizer. Must be able to present summary listing of Notes bullets sorted & organized according to [meta] data attached to each bullet: Here's the deal: I love Notes bulleted checklists. I like being able to have multiple lists (named Notes) in a compact font and being able to sort & re-org bullets whenever appropriate. But now I'm looking for more organizational sophistication. Ideally, for each bullet I'd like to be able to attach some meta data that won't normally be visible on the Note w/out tapping something or whatever. The meta data I'm interested in would be creation-date, due-date, days-to-complete, date-to-start, and priority. I'd be satisfied w/ pretty minimal navigational aids that use this meta data. Should be able to get overview/list (sort of like built-in Find) that will show me: List all bullets in selected Note(s) sorted by various meta data criteria--overview must show Note name, at least some of bullet text, and whatever of the meta data I want displayed. List all bullets in selected Note(s) or across all Notes that have selected meta data attributes. It would be ok for this overview to be read-only, but I'd definitely want to be able to do something like tap on an entry & have it jump me into the right Note at that bullet. $-----------$------------$------------$------------$-----------$-----------$ New! One of the conference speakers is Microsoft-hater Scott McNealy of Sun, whose talk is entitled "No One Should Own The Alphabet." Microsoft refused an invitation to the conference, saying that it was stacked with rivals. Microsoft defender Tony Williams says: "Nader doesn't speak for consumers. He speaks for Nader. But certainly he is one who is very media savvy and has an ability to cause heartburn to American corporations." (AP 12 Nov 97) ** INTEL EYES CHEAP PC MARKET ** Intel, in a strategic about-face, says it will begin manufacturing specialized chips that run PCs costing less than $1,000 and other information appliances. "What it means is we will have multiple products in multiple segments under one brand," says Intel CEO Andy Grove. Intel previously had focused on building ever-more-powerful microprocessors for high-end PCs, but now says it can produce variants of its Pentium II chip that can be incorporated into much less expensive machines. (Wall Street Journal 10 Nov 97) ** IBM INTRODUCES HIGH-CAPACITY DRIVE ** IBM will begin shipping two new drives that use its breakthrough Giant Magnetoresistive (GMR) heads technology next month. The Deskstar 16GP will have a storage capacity of between 3.2 gigabytes and 16.8 gigabytes, and the second drive -- the Deskstar 14GXP -- will provide up to 14.4 gigabytes of storage. PCs with the new drives will be available in early 1998. The company eventually plans to make the GMR technology available in devices ranging from notebooks to IBM subsystems. "There is no reason why we wouldn't incorporate these advances into other systems," says an IBM VP. "This announcement is aimed at the desktop arena, but the entire family of hard disk drives will be incorporated into other products." (InternetWeek 10 Nov 97) ** ISP NUMBERS STILL GROWING ** Despite predictions of an imminent shakeout in the Internet service provider (ISP) market, the number of providers has almost tripled in the past 18 months to 4,000. Industry observers say the increase is fueled by large increases in online users: "Access revenues will be growing rapidly because more people are getting online," says a senior analyst with IDC/Link. The number of online households is expected to rise to around 40 million by 2001, up from 13 million in 1996. (Investor's Business Daily 13 Nov 97) ** MASTERING THE NET ** Marlboro College in Vermont will begin offering two new graduate programs in January -- a master of arts in teaching with the Internet and a master of science in Internet strategy. "Knowledge-making is changing in every field because of this technology," says the college's president. "We're not focusing just on the Internet, but how people can use this kind of cardinal technology in a broader way." The programs will focus on teaching teachers how to incorporate the Internet into the classroom experience, and teaching managers how to oversee an organization's Internet strategy. (Boston Globe 14 Nov 97) ** GIANT CD-ROMs SLATED FOR 2000 ** Norsam Technologies Inc. in Albuquerque, N.M., is developing a CD-ROM technology that would enable users to store up to 165 gigabytes on a single disk -- almost 10 times as much data as can be stored on digital video disks. The additional capacity is made possible by replacing the prevailing 800- and 350 nanometer laser writing technology with a more powerful 50-nanometer particle beam. "The Norsam HD-ROM will ... be a major competitor in the high-availability data arena," says the company's president. The HD-ROM disks will be the same size as current CD-ROMs, but will require users to install high-density readers in their devices. According to new research from ActivMedia, the rise in telecommuting will mean urban dwellers will become even younger on the average than they already are, as twenty-somethings opt to stay in the cities, while 35- to65-year-olds move out to the 'burbs and beyond. Technical and clerical workers will be more likely to move out of the office, with management and executives, who depend more on face-to-face contact, remaining at headquarters. Finally, the movers and shakers that make up the telecommuting population are pretty much already wired -- the advent of WebTV and other Internet appliances is not likely to change work patterns very significantly: "You're not going to get garage mechanics moving out to the country just because they can get on the Web," says an ActivMedia researcher. (TechWeb 31 Oct 97) ** STRATEGIES: WHAT'S CHANGING? AND HOW DOES IT RELATE TO OTHER CHANGES? ** Gary Hamel, coauthor of "Competing For The Future" (Harvard Business School Press) says that if you want to create an industry revolution, look around you, and see if you can find changes -- "discontinuities" -- that are under-recognized or under-appreciated. And think like an outsider -- because insiders rarely create industry revolutions. The grocery industry was changed by upstarts like Peapod and Starbucks and Petco and Boston Market, and the auto industry was changed by Auto-By-Tel and CarMax and AutoNation. One of the most interesting cases of all is CNN, which "saw at least three things that had already changed in our world that others had not yet put together": technology changes produced small satellite uplinks that made it possible to report from virtually anywhere; lifestyle changes meant we don't all get home in time for the six o'clock network news; and regulatory changes allowed cable operators to undermine the monopoly of regional broadcasters. Seeing the future is not all forecasting and is not all scenario planning. It is looking around yourself and seeing what's happening. (Joel Kurtzman, Interview with Gary Hamel, Strategy & Business 4th Qtr 1997) ** INNOVATIONS: TIME WILL TELL ... ** It's too late for this year, but technology currently being developed could put an end to the seemingly endless resetting-the-clocks routine we all stumble through twice a year when standard time changes to daylight savings and back again. The technology operates off a signal beamed from the National Institute of Standards and Technology in Fort Collins, Colo. The signal, which is already used by government agencies to pinpoint exact time, would be boosted nationwide, where digital clocks equipped with tiny receivers -- including those in computers, microwaves and VCRs -- would automatically be reset to the new time. And for once, all the clocks in the house would be synchronized!
