Enfour has purchased the email client GoFetch from Fetch Software, and released version 1.27. Jim Bailey has joined Enfour to continue development and support of GoFetch Mail. The software will list for US$35 and can be purchased via: . 2. Enfour now has a 9W Power Adapter for Newton devices that is smaller than Apple's current adapter. The unit will also recharge both the NiCad and the NiMH Rechargeable Battery Packs. Pricing will be US$20 + S&H. This item is now shipping. 3. Enfour is also now offering replacement Electro-Luminescence (EL) backlight panels for the MP2000 and the yet to be released MP2100. Colors available include Blue-Green, Green, Blue, Red, Orange and Pink. Pricing will be US$45 + S&H. This item is not yet shipping. ** ANONYMOUS SOURCE SAYS MESSAGEPAD LINE NOT DEAD ** Macintouch published the following from an anonymous Macintouch reader who reportedly got the information from an Apple representative on 05Nov97: "The Newton 2X00 form factor is not dead, but most resources have been shifted towards the eMate. There will be an update to the 2100, but it is many months away." A similar rumor was also posted to: . ** NEWTONS AT COMDEX -- AT LEAST AT TWO PLACES ** The folks at TeleType brings us news that those Las Vegas Comdex 1997 attendees interested in their Newton and Windows CE TeleType GPS solutions can check out demos in the Hitachi and Casio booths. [EDITOR: Newton, Inc. had planned a booth at Comdex, but have axed that plan given that Apple had announced back in Sep97 that they weren't having a booth. Maybe Apple can 'rent' some space from Oracle or Lucent?!? Kudos to TeleType for showing the Newton off in a Windows CE manufacturer's booth.] $-----------$------------$------------$------------$-----------$-----------$ The Next Generation of WriteRight Screen Enhancements protect your screen from scratches, reduce glare and improve your handwriting recognition by simulating the feel of writing on paper. Many NewtNews readers wrote that they were not successful in getting through to the upgrade center on the announced 07Nov97 availability date. Many report being told to try again on 10Nov97 because 'kinks' in the system were still being worked out, but others said they had no problem getting through even though it did take at least 30 minutes to get through the whole process. For more information about the MP2000 to MP2100 upgrade, check out the FAQ that has been posted to: . ** CONTINUED MURKY NEWS ABOUT STRONGARM ** Even after last weeks "Acorn World" conference in Great Britain, information is still very murky on what the Digital and Intel 'buy-out' agreement means for the StrongARM processor. The key 'concept' behind this deal (according to sources in the industry) is that Intel has never been very successful in the embedded processor market, and the StrongARM processor is a 'successful' product in that marketplace. [EDITOR: So, think positive!] ** END USER DEMO SELLS ANOTHER NEWTON ** Nick Avery writes on the NewtonTalk listserver : I won a convert to Newton! On a recent road trip I was working (well ... futzing) on my Newt in a coffee shop in Brighton - halfway between Detroit and Lansing, and this fella approaches me to see if I was using a Pilot. He was thinking of buying one. After the famous 'Avery 5 minute demo' he was converted to Newton. The clinching item was when I entered his name and address in Newt, and Newt recognized everything first time (whew!). ** SHORT AND SWEET DAILY NEWTON NEWS ** For the last couple of weeks NewtNews has been experimenting with a 'Daily Newton' news page. Please include details of the Newton model and OS that you are using. ** TIP #1: SYNCING WITH CLARIS ORGANIZER 2.0 ** John Brooks writes: Here are some nuggets I gleaned through the frustrating process of trying to set up syncing with a Claris Organizer 2.0 file: 1. Do not sync with an existing file. 2. Do not create a new file by exporting an Organizer file from your Newt. Now, here's what to do: 1. Create a new file w/i organizer and save it. It will be empty. Quit Organizer. 2. Increase the memory allotment for NCU (with the Get Info window) to as much as you can allow; around 18MB should do. 3. Go into the NCU folder and then open the Intellilink folder. Increase the memory for the application called COrgAE2 to about 4MB. 4. If there is a file in there called XLATE.LOG, throw it away. 5. Launch NCU and connect with your Newton. Go to Synchronization settings and select the Organizer file for your dates. On the first sync, do dates and names one at a time. in the future you can sync them simultaneously. 6. Under advanced options, set it to "Newton wins" 7. Begin your synchronization. A couple of other tips from John: If you continue to get error (-1), try throwing out the XLATE.LOG file. You can only sync your newt with one file, for example your calendar at work. It gets confused if you try to sync with two different calendar files. A good work around here is to just export your dates for one of the files. ** TIP #2: SYNCING WITH CLARIS ORGANIZER 2.0 CONTINUED ** Jon writes: I have a 120 and a 2000 and I am connecting to a Mac running Claris Organizer 2.0. OK. Create a Claris database (pref. empty). Sync it to the Newton (I sync all the categories even though the NCU release notes say to sync one type at a time - i.e. don't do notes and names and dates and to dos together). Sometimes the sync fails and thereafter nothing works properly (in news the common complaint is that banners don't transfer and appointments get duplicated). Solution: After the sync fails, export all of your organizer records to text files (I use the Organizer format because it makes reloading easier). Create a new Claris DB, reload from text files, update the sync options on the Newt to use the new DB and everything will work again. What has happened is that somewhere in the Claris DB there are some stray links which point nowhere and thus screw up the sync. The export/import into a new DB appears to resolve this. Since working this out I have only had to do it twice (in four months). ** TIPS WANTED ** Please send me any tips, hints, goodies, jokes, interesting facts or ingenious ideas for future issues of this column to Roger Coleman . Or use Adobe as an http proxy server (it converts PDF transparently). Edupage, 03Nov97 thru 10Nov97 ----------------------------- ** PUBLICATION DATE DEBATE ** The viability of a libel lawsuit filed in New York state court hinges on whether the court decides that an official publication date is the date an article appears in any form, including electronic, or whether it's the date on the print version. Business Week has asked a trial judge to dismiss a $1 billion lawsuit brought by stock picker Julian H. Robertson, Jr. because the suit was filed a day after the one-year statute of limitations ran out, according to the magazine. Business Week contends that the online version of the article, which appeared March 21, 1996, constitutes the article's "publication" date, rather than the print version, which was published the following day. Robertson's suit was filed on March 24, 1997, which, once a weekend is counted, is exactly a year and a day after the electronic publication of the March 21, 1996 article. "This will be the first case in which the courts address the impact of a publication appearing on the Net rather than on paper," says the First Amendment lawyer representing Business Week. (AP 3 Nov 97) ** MEETING ON BUILDING INFO TECH WORK FORCE SLATED ** In response to dire forecasts of labor shortages in the information technology industry, government and industry leaders have scheduled a meeting in January to "galvanize a swift, effective response." A Dept. of Commerce report entitled "America's New Deficit: The Shortage of Information Technology Workers" warns that there would be an annual shortfall of 70,000 workers in the computer science, engineering and programming fields between the years 1994 and 2005. "Think about running out of iron ore in the midst of the industrial revolution and the impact on the world that would have had," says the president of the Information Technology Association of America, a chief sponsor of the planned meeting. "In the knowledge revolution, skilled people are our basic raw material." (Tampa Tribune 3 Nov 97) ** LOTUS SOFTWARE FOR NETWORK COMPUTERS ** IBM's Lotus division is introducing Java-coded software to run on diskless "network computers" that allow users to download the applications software (word processing, spreadsheets, etc.) from a "server" computer. The Lotus software will be made available not only to IBM customers but also to customers of Sun, Oracle, Novell, Netscape, and AOL. (USA Today 3 Nov 97) ** IBM OFFERS $999 PC ** Recognizing that it had underestimated the demand for PCs in the sub-$1,000 category, IBM will now try to compete with rivals such as Compaq by selling a $999 Aptiva E16 assembled for IBM by Acer in Taiwan. The system will come without a monitor but will have a 166 mhz processor and features comparable to other low-priced PCs. (Wall Street Journal 6 Nov 97) ** LAPTOPS SEEN BY SENATE AS THREAT TO DECORUM ** The Senate Rules Committee has rejected a request by Mike Enzi (R., Wyoming) to be allowed to use a laptop on the floor of the Senate. Enzi had earlier said: "The laptop was a necessary tool for me, since you do not have any staff in Wyoming. I found I could take notes and write speeches, and during debate I could write down the issues that I need to respond to. I could look up documents that support that and be sure I had the facts right." But a number of other Senators spoke against the idea, including Wendell Ford (D., Kentucky): "I don't want to appear to be standing in the way of progress and technology. This committee will continue to wrestle with the trade-offs of allowing members to take advantage of new technologies while preserving the history and decorum of the Senate chamber." (News.Com 5 Nov 97) ** MAC NETWORK COMPUTER ** Apple will make new-product announcements that include a stripped down "network computer" called Macintosh NC, new models at the mid-range and high-end computer line, and a new PowerBook laptop. The Mac NC, which is expected to ship in the first half of 1998, will use database-server software from Oracle. Apple is also planning to begin selling its computers via the World Wide Web. (Wall Street Journal 7 Nov 97) ** CYBERSPACE ADVERTISING SOARS ** The Internet Advertising Bureau says that Internet advertising revenue for the first six months of 1997 jumped to $343.9 million, an increase of 322% from the year-earlier period. The IAB survey also found that 86% of advertisers think that pricing based on the conventional system of cost per thousand is the best model for Internet advertising. Indeed, companies that fail to do this will fall further and further behind, say industry analysts, and a recent survey by Ernst & Young's Center for Business Innovation and Business Intelligence shows 94% of respondents confident that they could leverage the knowledge in their organizations through more deliberate management of their knowledge resources. Almost three-quarters of the respondents said they'd already started a knowledge management project or planned to do in the next year. "The last remaining competitive differentiator is to stay ahead of the competition all the time," says a senior analyst with the Delphi Consulting Group. "The single differentiator that is likely to last is innovation, and the raw material of innovation is knowledge." (Information Week 23 Oct 97) ** STRATEGIES: A WORLD WITHOUT YOU: WOULD ANYONE CARE? ** Management professors Adam Brandenburger of Harvard and Barry Nalebuff of Yale explain the business concept of "added value" in an interesting way: "Instead of asking what you can get on your own, it requires you to ask what others will lose if you go away. It forces you to imagine a world without you -- not a pleasant task -- and to consider just what it is that you bring to others." For example, the added value of glass in a laptop computer is enormous (no glass, no computer) but the specific question that a glass manufacturer has to ask is: what is the added value of that manufacturer's particular glass. So to understand added value you need to think about one's added value over the entire value chain (e.g., the laptop computer) rather than one's link in the chain (e.g., making glass), with the goal being to add more value (such as tougher glass) than your any of your competitors. The general question is: What would be lost if you, along with your core competency, were out of the game? How well could others fill in? (Adam M. Brandenburger & Barry J. Nalebuff, "The Added-Value Theory Of Business," Business & Strategy 4th Quarter 1997) ** INNOVATIONS: QUIET JACKHAMMER ** Engineers at Brookhaven National Laboratory have adapted technology developed as part of the former Star Wars program to produce a jackhammer that makes less noise than an idling car. The jackhammer operates by using air pressure to create a wave of helium gas, which then pushes a bean-sized steel projectile out of the end of a metal cylinder at 3,000 feet per second -- almost three times the speed of sound. A single pellet can break up more than a square foot of concrete into pebble-sized fragments. Baffles on the cylinder muffle the sound to a low hum. The Lab is now working on an even more powerful model (speeds up to 10,000 feet per second), and scientists say the prototype model should be ripping up New York City streets by next year.
