The BBC's Laurie Taylor is a male. Sorry for the misinformation. ** OPINION -- WHY THE NEWTON IS BETTER THAN OTHERS ** Dan Rowland writes on the USENET newsgroup comp.sys.newton.misc: Dear Mr. Jobs: Just wanted you to know that I have traded in my PalmPilot for the Newton MessagePad 2000. Maybe others like me can convince you to pause before trashing what will be a successful machine. I was one of the earliest Pilot users (bought it within a month of its release). You can say I am an early adopter when it comes to PDA technology. I have owned a Sharp Wizard, an HP 200LX, HP OmniGo, Newton 100 and 110 and finally the Pilot. I am a sales and marketing person, one of the hundreds of thousands of mobile professionals who travel, need contact information and need to record and keep meeting notes and then fax (or better yet) e-mail meeting information to clients and others. I, like everyone else, need an electronic note pad. Something that I can write on in a meeting, have the words stored electronically so I can keep track of them and reprint them to send to others. Before the MP2K, I had to write my notes on paper, then retype them to send. I tried to use the Pilot for notes, but it just doesn't work. I will never write as fast with Graffiti as I do my own handwriting. The MP2K has changed that, and you should smell money. It's not the machine that is wrong; it is Apple's marketing. If you want to see wider sales, you need to do the following: 1. Better connectivity with Windows (it is a Win world). I, like 80% of the computer world, am a Windows user. Your machine should work seamlessly with Windows. It is clearly superior to any CE machine I have seen, and believe me, I have tested every WinCE machine out there. 2. Better contact management: linking with Schedule+ was an excellent idea. Where is your follow up to Outlook? I hate to see you lose when you are so close. Sincerely, Dan Rowland ** THOREAU ON JOBS ** Did you know that Henry David Thoreau knew Steve Jobs?!? "He is the best sailor who can steer within the fewest points of the wind, and exact a motive power out of the greatest obstacles." The article starts on page 30, and the mention is on page 44 in a subsection entitled "The Forbidden Eggs." If you have a utility you need written, please let NewtNews know by sending an email to: . ** A KILLER APP!!! ** Lorenz Szabo writes: Let's call it a "BBedit Lite" for Newton! Yep, BBEdit is a trademark and commercial application - but there is no tool like BBEdit ... not even under WinNT! An ASCII text-editor that has the ability to import/export ASCII files via serial connection; yes no buggy NCU and no other third-party utility like Slurpee, X-Port or whatever (even my old Casio basic computer was able to do this, it is a shame that NOS is not able to import/export files via serial connection). The problem is, that you can connect your Newton to a Unix workstation or PC, but you cannot download a simple piece of text! You have to create NewtonBook or fiddle along with NCU or X-Port. Have you ever tried to install NCU or NewtonPress on a Macintosh Classic or even a powerful SGI Octane? Also this text-editor stores its files in its own soup, can manage files bigger than 100k without splitting them and can eventually export files into the Notepad. This text-editor is a powerful standalone tool like BBEdit for the MacOS. It has the functions to strip away tabs and cr and it has cool search and replace functions. There is the ability to create custom menus for inserting text-strings, e.g. for hacking HTML or templates (imagine one template for your own home page, one template for an office e-mail memo and so on). I also think that this text-editor would also be the perfect replacement of NewtonWorks every NOS 2.0 users wishes. Most of use are not dealing with layout (esp. on portable devices) all the day, we are dealing with information (you can layout later on your desktop computer with Word or PageMaker)! A plus could be a tool like StuffIt that can access the soup of the text-editor on the MacOS and you can down/upload the files like the nice StuffIt interface! Again, it is a shame that Apple has not integrated this simple tool into NOS! Every basic pocket-computer or my old HP95LX was able to import/export via serial connection and deal with texts longer than 100K without splitting it or reformatting into unreadable notes! Although I'm comfortable using NewtonPress, I would really like to see such an app. Have you ever tried to simply download a (simple) Project Gutenberg file on your Newton without reformatting it in NewtonPress? Try this and then think about my idea! ** TENNIS SOLUTION?!? ** Jack DeAndrade is looking for a Newton solution to enable tennis match charting and scoring. It would also be ideal of have some 'lessons' capabilities, and advanced history features. ** ENDNOTES FOR NEWTWORKS ** Frank Fountain is looking for an edition to NewtWorks that enable the insertion and tracking of endnotes. This solution would also need to be able to upload the endnotes to desktop word processors. ** REQUEST FOR THREE NEW SOLUTIONS ** Geoff Chan is looking for a several Newton solutions: 1.) patch that cancels all low battery warnings; 2.) Luna Calendar with all the Chinese holidays; and 3.) Newton battery utility that displayed the % of battery power instead of the standard bar gauge. ** QUICK LAUNCHING DATES MODIFICATION ** Russell Sheinkopf would like a utility that would let him choose the time that the Dates application pops open to. The typical time is 1 p.m. and this is not ideal. ** BETTER FIND ** Timothy Ostler would like a 'Find' utility that doesn't conceal the part of the screen containing the found word like the built-in Find does. He also thinks that 'Finds' should have a more persistent window that doesn't 'disappear' once you type on a found item. $-----------$------------$------------$------------$-----------$-----------$ Need more Newton information?!? Microsoft has also shipped Windows CE 2.0 to its partners. More information next week. Puget Sound Business Journal published a piece with many pro Windows CE tidbits on 10Oct97. The focus of the article is to list as many Windows CE success stories as possible -- including info on how the Seattle Mariners are using Windows CE HPCs to do advanced scouting on prospects and on other teams. John Spooner has an article entitle "Microsoft Extends Windows CE Reach: OS moving beyond handhelds to palmtops, consumer devices" on page 28 of PC Week published on 06Oct97. New features in Windows CE 2.0: support for VGA screens up to 256 colors; works on following processors: X86, MIPs, StrongARM, and PowerPC; and better networking (TCP/IP on LANs and dial-up). There are also 'embedded' versions of Windows CE that work in 8-, 12-, and 16-bit environments. PC Week published on 06Oct97 noted in their 'news digest' blurbs on page 3 that Microsoft has posted betas of the following Windows CE tools on their WWW site: Visual Basic 5.0, Visual C++ 5.0, and a Visual C++ Embedded Toolkit. Microsoft also announced that a Visual J++ toolkit v1.1 beta would be out by the end of 1997 for Windows CE 2.0. Final release for all the kits is expected for Q1'98. The Visual Basic 5 toolkit for Windows CE requires the download of 12 files that are over 100-MBs total. Visual Basic for CE requires at least Windows 95 to run. If you want to run the Windows CE 'emulator' that is part of the Platform SDK then you need to run on Windows NT. Our approach is not to have a trade negotiation. By 2005, at least 1 billion people will be on the Internet. If 40 million Frenchmen aren't there, that's their problem." (New York Times 7 Oct 97) ** UUNET CEO SAYS FLAT PRICING IS ON ITS WAY OUT ** UUNet CEO John Sidgmore says the only reason most Internet service providers are afraid to move from flat rate pricing to usage-based fees is competition from America Online: "The minute he (AOL's Steve Case) changes, everybody else will. I'm not a consumer marketer. I can't imagine making money at that price. The whole problem with the U.S. communications system is that it's flat-rate priced. Not just the ISPs. Your local telephone bill is flat-rate priced. That whole model needs to change. People need to pay for what they're using." (Investor's Business Daily 7 Oct 97) ** NET PRODUCTIVITY? ** With a slew of new products for monitoring employees' Internet use hitting the market, a study by the Society for Human Resource Management reveals that 48% of the employers surveyed actually thought the World Wide Web raised the productivity of their workers, with only 6% report a productivity drop. (Wall Street Journal 7 Oct 97) ** SUN SUES MICROSOFT FOR CHANGING JAVA ** Sun Microsystems, which licenses its Java language to Microsoft and other computer companies, is suing Microsoft on the grounds that Microsoft's new Explorer 4.0 software has misappropriated Java by deviating from the agreed-upon standard. The suit charges Microsoft with trademark infringement, false advertising, breach of contract, unfair competition and interference, and requests financial damages as well as an injunction against further shipment of Explorer 4.0 until Microsoft adds two components of Java which it did not include in that software. Sun executive Alan Baratz says: "Microsoft has deliberately broken its contractual obligations. Microsoft has to play by the same rules as the rest of the industry." Microsoft Executive Charles Fitzgerald counters: "This is hypocrisy, and Sun is trying to hold Microsoft to a different standard than they hold themselves," and adds: "In a lot of ways Sun has backed themselves into a corner. The worst case is we don't use the Java name, we can still say we're Java-compatible." (New York Times 8 Oct 97) ** INTERMIND SEEKS LICENSING FEES FOR PUSH TECHNOLOGY ** Intermind Corp. says it expects to be awarded a key patent for "push" technology in the next few months, and plans to seek licensing fees from software companies using the technology covered in its patent application. Those companies include Netscape and Microsoft. "We believe that it's unlikely there will be any push-technology products in the next several years that will not require a license from Intermind," says the company's president. Intermind says its strategy for collecting those fees will hinge on negotiating reasonable terms with the industry giants, which easily could ignore its claims, or file expensive lawsuits to drag things out in court. (Wall Street Journal 8 Oct 97) ** ANDREESSEN REPLACED AS NETSCAPE'S TECHNOLOGY OFFICER ** Netscape has named Eric Hahn as its new chief technology officer, replacing company co-founder Marc Andreessen, who will continue to have his other title: executive vice president of products. Hahn said: "Marc is a brilliant strategist and visionary and I would not think he's given up his vision and leadership responsibilities. Marc for the first time is taking on significant and exciting operating responsibilities managing products, and I'm returning to my first love as a technologist." (San Jose Mercury News 11 Oct 97) ** FREE VIDEO-ON-DEMAND, TO THE RIGHT ADDRESS ** Residents of New York's trendy Trump Tower will be getting video-on-demand free, offered by fledgling start-up Freelinq. The catch? Two 30-second commercials at the beginning of every film. The deal will work, says Freelinq, because advertisers will be eager to share their messages with a momentarily captive, very upscale audience. "It pushes individual ads to the right people in the right way," says the company's president, who predicts 4,000 apartments in Manhattan high-rises will be hooked up by year's end. If the healthy stream of traditional educational material gets pinched down to a trickle of multimedia titles, I cannot help but worry that the rate of innovation and creative thinking will go down together with the diversity of educational presentation." (George Cybenko, "Multimedia In CSE Education," IEEE Computational Science & Engineering Jul-Sep 97) ** STRATEGIES: BUILD DISTINCTIVE (AND LONG-TERM!) RELATIONSHIPS ** John Browne, the chief executive of British Petroleum, says in a Harvard Business Review interview that it's essential for an organization to develop its own "distinctive" role, by building "distinctive" relationships with partners, suppliers and customers to maximize value. How can you build such relationships? First, by working hard to make sure your partners achieve their own goals; second, by delivering on your promises reliably and consistently; third, by giving your people real authority to make decisions; fourth, by making sure the relationship is open and flexible for all parties; fifth, by being humble enough to learn from your partners; and, finally, by building relationships for the very long term. "Of course, you cannot have a strong relationship with everyone. But in general, long-term relationships are the most profitable ones. Think about going into a new country. If you do just one piece of business in that country, how on earth are you going to recover the setup costs? So you have to think, What's the business after that? How do I get a sustainable position? The obvious answer is by building strong, long-term relationships." (Steven E. Prokesch, An Interview With British Petroleum's John Browne, Harvard Business Review Sep/Oct 97) 20 ** INNOVATIONS: SELF-REPLICATING SILICON ** Fifty years after legendary computer scientist John Von Neumann first envisioned a self-reproducing computer, researchers at the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology have developed a self-repairing, self-replicating version of a very specialized computer. The system is based on cells of identical processors, called "biodules," each of which contains a collection of circuits that can be rewired by software, allowing it to assume new functions. The cells are arranged in columns with spare cells that sit off to the side of the functioning ones. If something goes wrong, the entire column is deactivated, and the functions of each column are shifted over one, so that a spare column takes over the activities of the decommissioned one. The self-replication works the same way -- if there are enough spare cells, the working ones just copy themselves into a new set of cells. Researchers say the move to a self-replicating universal machine should be relatively easy: "We should be able to realize the original dream of Von Neumann in the very near future."
