The article notes that Apple recent brought their Newton Technology back into Apple and probably going to leverage this in their Network Computer offerings. ** NEWTON SCORES HIGH IN T3 REVIEW ** Guy Marriage notes that the Oct97 edition of the English magazine entitled 'T3' has an "excellent" MP2K review entitled "Apple of My Eye" on page 80. The reviewer is Steve Faragher, and in the end the MP2K scored "9 out of 10 in each of the following categories: Use, Lust, Tech, Wow. Summing it up as Handheld Heaven." You might be able to learn more about this article via: . ** BBC CONTINUES TO GIVE THE NEWTON GOOD COVERAGE ** Mark Degg also reports that "Laurie Taylor of the BBC Radio 4 program "Afternoon Shift" has just gotten a MP2k and was waxing lyrical about its ability to be written on with a stylus and [have it] convert [her] squiggle into sensible text." Ian Baker notes that the BCC has again covered the work of Trevor Baylis -- inventor of the clockwork radio that can power an Apple eMate in physical locations with no power -- in an upcoming show called "Tomorrow's World." For more information check out: - - - - - - ** SO SO NEWTON REVIEWS ** Mark Kellner at PC Portables Magazine has a new article entitled "Newton MessagePad still fails short of perfect assistant" published in The Washington Times on 29Sep97. Most of Mark's concerns are solved by 3rd party software solutions, but he is correct in noting the limited Windows desktop PIM connectivity. Mark is also not impressed with the bulk of the MP2K, keyboard, powercord, etc. ... Mark does have a few positive comments to make, but overall the MP2K is "close but not yet there." On Friday, 03Oct97 there was reportedly a post to the Mac Central site that contained a pointer to a MessagePad 2000 review. Several NewtNews readers cc'd NewtNews editorial staff with their letters-to-the-editors at MacCentral sighting problems with the review. Yomiuri Shimbun has an article with the a Newton mention published in The Daily Yomiuri on 30Sep97. The article is entitled "Picking PDAs by purpose and price". The article examines several devices: MessagePad 2000, PalmPilot Pro, Fujitsu INTERtop, Casio Cassiopeia, and Sharp Zaraus. The article is pretty pro-PalmPilot including quotes like -- "You almost feel sorry for the developers of the Newton, because the Pilot takes everything that was 'insanely great' about the Newton, and puts it into a truly portable unit [the PalmPilot]." Alan Goldstein has several Newton mentions in an article entitled "Handheld PCs seeing rebirth Scaled-back expectations for smaller computers help develop a market" published on 21Sep97 in the San Antonio Express-News. The first mention is the typical 'Newton slam' to start off a handheld PC article. But the article does include some good, positive comments by former Apple employee Sandy Benett, and some 'details' about the MessagePad 2000. Other handhelds focused on include: PalmPilot and various Windows CE devices. Alan did have one tidbit that NewtNews hasn't seen anywhere -- research from Casio that 84% of buyers of Windows CE devices have desktop machines, and 56% also have notebook laptops. And that Casio couldn't determine if new Windows CE users were using these devices to replace their laptops. ** HELPFUL MAJOR WEEKLY MAGAZINE WEB POINTERS ** - Web Week: - MacWeek: - InfoWorld: - Computer Reseller News: - PC Week: - Network World: - LAN Times: - Information Week: - Network Computing: $-----------$------------$------------$------------$-----------$-----------$ A N N O U N C I N G L E X I D R U G S - 97 +-------+ K2 Consultants, Inc. has just announced the latest version of | A R T | Drug Information Handbook with 5000 drugs and improved interface.+-------+ Check out www.skyscape.com/k2 for all medical and non-medical | b y | titles such as 5 Min. The job description generally focuses on bringing together and leveraging pockets of business and technical knowledge to advance the company's competitive position, and involves not only locating, but also organizing, manipulating, filtering and presenting information so that employees on the front lines can comprehend and use it. Hal Varian, dean of the University of California at Berkeley's School of Information Management and Systems, says, "There are a lot of information resources a company has that need to be structured to be useful." Providing that structure and working with the technical side of the corporation to make the information resources available and useful to employees will be an increasingly key activity at most businesses in coming years. "Like it or not, the world is becoming smaller and smaller and ever more transparent. Your fenced-in yard won't be quite as private as it used to be. But neither will the dark alley near your bank teller machine. Tradeoff, tradeoff, tradeoff." (Ann Marsh, "No Place to Hide," Forbes 22 Sep 97) ) ** STRATEGIES: SPEED CAN GET YOU NOWHERE FAST ** A lot of high-tech companies are now on "Internet time" and think that speed is everything: speed to development, speed to Initial Public Offering, speed to market. But speed can kill. Citing various companies that were first or relatively early technology developers (Apple, Swiss watchmakers, etc.) that lost out to technology imitators (Microsoft with Windows, Hattori's Seiko watches, etc.), successful entrepreneur Michael Bloomberg notes that the company he founded wasn't the first to deliver real-time financial data and information, but that the front-runners before him are nowhere to be found today. If speed isn't the answer, what is? According to Bloomberg, it's product: "To succeed as an entrepreneur, you've got to focus on the product first. Forget about five-year plans and computer analysis. At Bloomberg, we began work on our first data terminal before we had our first client; we launched a news service before newspapers agreed to carry our stories; we created television shows before we had sponsors, and magazines before we had advertisers... If you start with a good product, the rest will fall into place." (Michael R. Bloomberg, "Not Always To The Swiftest," Bloomberg Personal Oct 97) ** INNOVATIONS: MEETINGS-TO-GO ** Now there's a mobile meeting room designed for busy corporate executives on the go. The 1120S Mini-Bus, made by Mauck Special Vehicles, is fully equipped for multimedia presentations, including a 20-inch TV, VCR and audio system. The conference room seats up to 16 people, and four-wheel independent steering gives the vehicle car-like handling.
