John notes that several of other main and popular sites were using badge magstripe readers hooked to Newton 120s to record contact information. John also ran into Newton vertical market developers Visual Link Telecommunications Services showing off a MP2K solution that fits to a 'police' bicycle with a battery pack and wireless modem. The developer and the system integrator, TelePad, have also hooked up the system to monitor heart rate data from the bicycle rider and wirelessly transmitting this data back to the home fort. The whole conversation struck a cord with me, because of what Len has personally been able to accomplished with his Newton. Compelling stories, make for compelling products, and thus can't help promote the Newton.] Len Lutz has been a programmer since the 1970s. He has programmed computers with all different languages, but was most comfortable with classic style BASIC. After getting into the Newton he checked out all the programming solutions for the Newton, and without a doubt is very happy and extremely please with NS Basic. He heartly suggests to any current Newton users that if they are even remotely interested in 'quick and easy' programming for the Newton, that they give NS Basic a try. ** FORM FACTOR MATTERS ** Gerald Mesaric writes: In my opinion Apple is not quite right regarding the sizes of the currently available Newton MessagePads. I bought a Pilot last year, because -- although it has less features -- it is truly pocket-sized, and it does practically weight nothing. However, I am of course missing some features of the Newton. I think that there is a big market for two additional Newton form-factors: - a A4-sized Newton, so I can throw away my (paper-)notebook which takes my notes during the work (the Newton screen is too small) - a Pilot-sized Newton which I can take with me wherever I go And of course, excellent IR-communication software between those two and a similar IR-docking station for my desktop PC. $-----------$------------$------------$------------$-----------$-----------$ From your armchair, find your favorite shows using your Newton. The article included a color photo of the MP2K and is entitled "Newtons demystify engine room of politics." The bulk of the story on page 43 focuses on how the MP2K is used by the New South Wales Parliament to schedule and report on parliamentary proceedings, and relay information to the public via IR to closed circuit TV. The Parliament "worked together with Newton World, a local dealership who did most of the hard work by the sounds of things." ** NEWTON MENTIONED IN POPULAR SCIENCE MAGAZINE ** Calvin Grier <76330.3425@compuserve.com> notes that the October 1997 edition of Popular Science has a "Return of the PDA" article. Please include details of the Newton model and OS that you are using. ** MAXIMISE HEAP FOR BETTER INTERNET SESSIONS ** >From Richard Braine [an essential tip for MP120/OS2.0, MP130]: Maximising Heap: New Newton Users and New NewtNews readers having problems with NetHopper and EnRoute e-mail may not know about the following heap shortage workaround for a trouble free time online: reset the Newton and quickly hold the pen tip down on the left side of the screen. When asked whether to activate packages, don't. If you have a card you will again need quickly to hold down the pen on the left to stop the card from activating. You now have maximum free heap and all packages not built-in will have crosses through them - they are temporarily "frozen." Now only activate what you need for your internet session (e.g. NIE and NetHopper for browsing and/or NIE, EnRoute Core, EnRoute internet and whichever EnRoute plugins you use for e-mail) by tapping their icons. You can put them all in one folder to make this process quicker (you can file extensions in any folder). When you finish browsing, just do another reset to reactivate all packages. This may well significantly increase the duration of your session. ** SOLVE RECOGNITION PROBLEMS WITH AWKWARD WORDS! ** >From John Heaney [for Newton OS 2.x]: I was having trouble with the word "the" while using cursive. "the," being very common is not a word I want to have a problem with. Fortunately, it was coming out as "etu", which is not a common word. So I added "etu" to my word list and made it expand to "the." Problem solved! [To do this: open up the little keyboard on the button bar in 'Notes' & tap the little book icon to open up the personal word list. Type the new word, tap 'expand,' type the word to expand to and tap 'add.'] I figured out an interesting way to verify this solution. If you go to the Setup folder in Extras you can open the Writing Practice application. A useful feature of this application is that it will tell you the top three candidate words for what you wrote. You don't have to write the word it suggests. In my case, I wrote the word "the" several times. Each time, I checked to see how it was interpreted, clicked the Same Word button and tried again. Many times, it would come up with "etu" as a better match than "the." For example, it might say "etu 76%" and "the 54%". Then I added "etu" to the word list and tried again. Now it says "the 76%" and "etu 76%". So, you can see that it interpreted my scrawl as "etu," which expanded to "the." So, they have the same score, but "the" is at the top of the list. You can use this technique for any common word that frequently gets turned into an uncommon word. ** TIPS WANTED ** Please send me any tips, hints, goodies, jokes, interesting facts or similar bits of information for future issues of this column to Roger Coleman . A survey by Christian Huitema of Bellcore indicates that the number of host computers grew from 14.7 million in September of 1996 to 26 million in September of 1997. The goal of the survey was to count centralized server computers, work stations, and each modem in the modem bank of Internet Service Providers. (New York Times 15 Sep 97) WINDOWS 98 TIMETABLE Microsoft announced that it will delay by several months the introduction next year of its newest Windows software program (Windows 98), so that it can coordinate release of two versions of the new product, one to upgrade Windows 3.1 and the other to upgrade Windows 95. Made jittery by the delay, investors caused Microsoft stock to drop $7.25 on Monday. (Washington Post 16 Sep 97) MICROSOFT JUMP-STARTS WEB TV Microsoft has unveiled a new, souped-up version of its WebTV system for surfing the Net via the television. The company's new technology is based on an innovative chip that combines the capabilities of a TV tuner, a cable modem and a high-speed PC modem all into one low-cost unit. The new boxes will enable WebTV to develop content that combines both television programming and Web sites in a seamless mix, using an improved program guide called Explore. "We intend to define mass-market media for the next century," says WebTV CEO Steve Perlman. Forrester Research predicts some 1 million Net-ready TVs will be in U.S. homes by 2000. (St. Petersburg Times 15 Sep 97) INTEL'S NEXT GENERATION OF CHIPS Intel has designed a new generation of memory chips capable of storing not one but two bits of information on each transistor, effectively doubling the storage capacity of a chip. In addition, Intel engineers think that in the future they may be able to build chips holding four or more bits on each transistor. The new chips will use "multilevel cell flash memory," which is able to go beyond binary (zero-or-one) readings and sense four distinct states -- equivalent to two bits of data. The specification is posted at . Developed by a coalition of academic, industry and government organizations, the metadata spec is the first of a series of specifications and software components that will enable Internet-based learning materials from diverse sources to be widely used. Educom also plans a 1998 release of a prototype instructional management system based on this and additional specifications. Once released, the specifications and software components of the IMS project will be available at no cost. Additional information on the IMS project can be found at . CONCERT TARGETS LAPTOP USERS Concert Communications Services, the joint-venture company of British Telecom and MCI, is offering a Remote Internet Access service that allows mobile computer users to hook up to the Internet via a network of local points of presence (POPs) in 50 countries. The service could enable multinational corporations to provide Internet access to their overseas employees without having to incur the expense of international phone calls to a home server. In addition, smaller Internet service providers could use the Concert network to expand their international POPs without the expense of building their own infrastructure. (InfoWorld Electric 19 Sep 97) NETSCAPE CHIEF PREDICTS PC GIVE-AWAY Netscape Communications CEO James Barksdale says his company will begin providing computers and other hardware at no cost to customers within a year. "In various parts of the country you will be definitely seeing trials within a year -- within a year from now -- of these kind of distribution models for appliances, network computers and personal computers." The company's strategy is to generate revenue through advertising, subscriptions, and a percentage of each online purchase made by subscribers. "We learned early on, give them a phone," he says of his earlier days at AT&T Wireless Services and McCaw Cellular. "They might use it." "We're also beginning to receive interest from the medical community," says a Xybernaut marketing rep. "Surgeons, for example, can use a wearable computer to examine a series of X-rays during an operation without having to rely on a runner to retrieve and deliver the images." And once high-quality voice recognition technology becomes widely available, wearable computers will rapidly move from niche markets into the mainstream, says a computer scientist at the Johns Hopkins University Center for Language and Speech Processing. "Right now, while users can issue simple interface commands with a high degree of accuracy, entering spoken information into word processors and other applications remains a tedious and unreliable chore." He predicts that when computers can accurately process conversational language and respond accordingly, people will wear computers "in the same fashion as a Walkman." (CIO 1 Sep 97) ** STRATEGIES: DISTRIBUTION AS STRATEGY ** You may think you're in the computer business or the washing machine business -- and maybe you are -- but you're also in the distribution business, because you won't compete effectively in the marketplace if you think distribution of your goods or services is peripheral to your strategic interests. What you need to develop is a "channel strategy" which aligns your organizational resources with what it should do to satisfy its target customers. Three ways of doing this: first, design your distribution channels from the market back, so that they're customer-focused rather than company-focused; second, create barriers to a response from your competitors, perhaps by locking yourself into an internal operation or into close ties with selected channel partners who will agree to lock out competing suppliers; third, enhance the delivery of superior customer value. The most important point to remember in choosing distribution methods is to choose organizational strategy. "The choice of a channel is also dictated by whether a firm elects to compete on operating excellence (e.g., by emphasizing reliability and competitive pricing of standard products and services), customer responsiveness (through some variant of mass customization or business partitioning), or superior performance. Each strategic thrust reflects the choice of a specific target segment, with distinct requirements and needs. (Erin Anderson, G. S. Day, V. K. Rangan, "Strategic Channel Design," Sloan Management Review Summer 97) ** INNOVATIONS: GLASSED LIGHTNING ** International Robotics is marketing the perfect paperweight for the technophile who has everything. Its Luminglas electronic sculpture contains chemically coated beads and inert gas, which, when electrically charged, sends filaments of light arcing through the glass sculpture. Even better, it's interactive -- when you touch it, the light is drawn to your fingertips.
