[EDITOR: This is a great site if you have a fast connection to the Internet. If you don't, and turn off graphics or are using your Newton, it isn't that great of a site. I think an all text version that is optimized for the Newton would be an excellent upgrade.] ** BENETT TO CHAT ONLINE ON 27JUL97 ** Raven Zachary reports that Sandy Benett, COO of Newton, Inc., will be a guest on the Hotline Server "Newton Intelligence" on 27Jul97 at 5 p.m. (EST). Raven has plans for an IRC mirror on the Newton IRC channel. For more info check out: . ** X-PORT 2.0 SHIPPING ** LandWare is reportedly now shipping their "excellent" file transfer utility for Newton OS -- Xport 2.0. This new version supports: transferring individual or multiple notes, lists, outlines, contacts, meetings, screen shots and packages; formatted output (RTF files); server mode; grayscale support; custom names import/export; and enhanced performance. On the desktop side of things, X-Port is Macintosh and Windows 3.1/95/NT savvy. The list price for this version will be US$49.95. For more info check out the URL listed above or send email to: . ** YOCAM TOP CANDIDATE FOR APPLE CEO?!? ** Who will be Apple's new CEO?!? It appears that even though Borland CEO Del Yocam has 'publicly' denied being asked to be Apple's new CEO, he is the front runner according to many in the know. He formerly did 10 years at Apple including 'excellent' work in the Apple II division and head of Pacific Rim operations. [Various sources including InfoWorld, 14Jul97, page 107] ** RUMORS ** MacInsider reports that the 'Business' eMate will be available soon, but no mention on exact specifics about the unit except that it will come in different colors than the eMate 300. This site also recently noted that Apple plans to soon list the retail price for the MessagePad 130 (H0188LL/B) at US$320. Word on the street is that the next iteration of NetHopper should be available in less than two weeks. [EDITOR: Which is right about time for MacWorld Boston 1997.] The German magazine MacWelt is reporting that Apple Germany is planning to release the MessagePad 2100 (not the 2000) in Germany by mid-Fall'97. No other specifics were noted, but the 2100 could have easily have more 'heap', internal storage, better bundles (modem & keyboard), and a faster StrongArm. Another interesting rumor is that some agency within the U.S. Government is very interested in purchasing large numbers of the "eMate 1000s". Which could be a factor in why it has taken so long to get such a product to market. $-----------$------------$------------$------------$-----------$-----------$ The New WriteRight Screen Enhancements protect your screen from scratches, reduce glare and improve your handwriting recognition by simulating the feel of writing on paper. Folks from Swiss Bank, AT&T, JP Morgan, Pen Computing, IEEE, Silicon Graphics, University of Illinois, etc. ... had very well written, very detailed, and very thoughtful things to say. In summary: - General agreement on my original three points (connectivity & synchronization, Java, 'different' form factors) - Newton, Inc. needs to let users know they are listening. - Hardware: more rugged, more heap, continue to up the speed, and docking station. - Wireless: desktop IrDA connectivity, commercial IrDA connectivity, and better GSM and PCS support. - Continue to push the limits of speech integration (first step would be Newton voice messages to desktop upload). - Connectivity: HotSync, NewtWorks converters, and Ethernet. ** I LOVE MY NEWTON'S CONNECTIVITY ** My "constant bitching" about desktop connectivity is not a reflection on my own dissatisfaction with my Newton connectivity. My MP2K is my PIM, and any PIM function that I need on my desktop machines is basically satisfied by typing in a contact or meeting date into an email message. My syncs are transferring a text file or a NewtWorks document, which works extremely well. Bascially I'm very happy. My dissatisfaction comments are related to email messages from NewtNews readers, and discussions on USENET newsgroup comp.sys.newton.misc. Granted that 'complainers' voice their opinion louder than those that are content, but the 'problems with desktop sync' are still an issue, and they need to get fixed sooner than later. ** INTERESTING FLAME WAR ** There is/was a great "Flame War" going on between Dave Winer and MacKiDo . Everyone is/was showing their "True Colors". I've found the whole experience very refreshing. Did you know that if you send Dave Winer email he consider the email to be 'public' unless you say in the message that this is a private message?!? Very interesting concept. $-----------$------------$------------$------------$-----------$-----------$ From your armchair, find your favorite shows using your Newton. With the PalmPilot costing US$329, he feels that he can get more for his money functionality wise with these two products than he could with the US$949 MessagePad 2000. Peter notes that "Newton 2.0 is an operating system that is ready for prime time." And he also plugs The Ultimate Newton Web site at: as the place to getting started to learn about Newton related hardware, software, and "user publications". [EDITOR: Special thanks to Daniel Frumkin for pointing NewtNews to this article.] ** INDEPTH HANDHELD REVIEW ** Michelle Campanale has an article entitled "Lab Report: Handhelds Get Serious: These tiny computers offer robust performance, surprising functionality, and true portability" running from page 118 through 125 of Byte published in Aug97. The article looks at 10 handhelds include the MessagePad 2000 which only got three out of five stars. The best, according to Michelle included: HP 320LX, NEC's Mobile Pro 450, and the Psion Series 3C. The MP2K was totally panned by the 'tests' and was even shown in a graph as offering the worst 'price vs. performance' (no details given on what worked and didn't). The two paragraphs devoted to the MP2K were accurate though, and noted the MP2Ks strengths: large screen, Mac OS connectivity, StrongArm, plenty of 3rd party software, and external keyboard. [EDITOR: According to Byte there is Windows CE and then there is 'proprietary' handheld operating systems like Psion, Zaurus, PalmPilot, and Newton. Why Windows CE isn't proprietary I don't know. I can't just FTP the source can I? This is the continuation of the trend of splitting technology into two camps -- Microsoft vs. Everything Else. With no surprise, Microsoft coming out looking like the 'winner.'] ** ANOTHER MAJOR REVIEW ** David Pogue looks at the "Top Pocket Organizers: Discover the Best Palm Size Device to Carry Your Desktop Data" on pages 136 through 140 of MacWorld published in Sep97. The review looks at: PalmPilot Personal (8.3/10.0 - "Editor's Choice"); Newton MessagePad 2000 (6.9/10.0), Psion Series 3c (6.0/10.0), and the Zaurus ZR-5800FX (5.0/10.0). Overall the article is pretty balanced, and well done. The MP2K's score is upgraded from a recent review because Newton Connection Utilities 1.0 is shipping now, and it worked with the Mac OS versions of Now Up-To-Date & Contact, and with Claris' Organizer 2.0. ** OTHER ARTICLES OF POTENTIAL INTEREST ** - "Calendaring on Schedule" by Christy Walker & Jim Kerstetter, PC Week, 14Jul97, page 1 - "Big Boost for Smart Cards: JavaCard initiatives move forward" by Scott Berinato & Michael Moeller, PC Week, 14Jul97, page 1 - "NC and NetPC 'Simplicity' could cause confusion" by Mark Van Name & Bill Catchings, PC Week, 14Jul97, page 69 - "W3C releases first version of HTML 4.0: standard doesn't address 'dynamic' HTML compatibility" by Lynda Radosevich & Stephen Lawson, InfoWorld, 14Jul97, page 19 - "Rough start for IMAP4: Customers criticize early products based on emerging Internet email standard" by Paul McNamara, Network World, 14Jul97, page 1 ** MAJOR WEEKLY MAGAZINE WEB POINTERS ** - Web Week: - MacWeek: - InfoWorld: - Computer Reseller News: - PC Week: - Network World: - LAN Times: - Information Week: $-----------$------------$------------$------------$-----------$-----------$ K2 consultants, Inc. has the best Medical titles for Newton. Time is Money. And, as every engineer knows: Power = Work / Time If Knowledge = Power, and Time = Money, then Knowledge = Work / Money Solving for Money, we get: Money = Work / Knowledge Thus, Money approaches infinity as Knowledge approaches zero, regardless of the Work done. What this means is: The Less you Know, the More you Make. Advertising Notes ----------------- If you are interested in advertising in NewtNews please send email to: . Edupage, 14Jul97 thru 21Jul97 ----------------------------- ** IN SEARCH OF GEEKS ** Industry observers say the widening gap between the supply of computer science graduates and computer industry demand probably won't close for at least a decade, leaving computer companies looking overseas for qualified applicants to fill their jobs. The number of computer science graduates in the U.S. has dropped from 48,000 in 1984 to 26,000 this year. "This is a real limiting factor to growth," says a researcher at Stanford Computer Industry Project. And it's not only computer companies that are hurting -- automobile makers, banks, brokerage houses and phone companies all are vying for the few "computer nerds" available. "Everybody's going crazy now trying to find these folks," says a Netscape human resources director. High on the list for overseas recruitment efforts are South Africa, the Philippines, India, Russia, Israel, Bulgaria and the Ukraine. (Business Week 21 Jul 97) ** SIEMENS, NETSPEAK TARGET INTERNET TELEPHONY MARKET ** Siemens Stromberg-Carlson and NetSpeak will collaborate on developing Internet telephony products, including Internet protocol telephony gateways, servers and Web phones, as well as installation and integration services that will enable customers to provide Internet telephony and related services. The new products are targeted at telecommunications carriers, cable companies and Internet service providers. (InfoWorld Electric 14 Jul 97) ** SNAFU AT NETWORK SOLUTIONS LEAVES USERS ANGRY ** Corrupted data used by Network Solutions, the company that processes Internet domain name registrations, has resulted in some Internet addresses being routed incorrectly or not at all, say some Internet service and backbone providers whose servers are maintained by Network Solutions. The problems started Wednesday night, when data entry errors resulted in the root server assigning incorrect IP addresses in response to URL requests. The problem is affecting .com and .net addresses. Network Solutions will have to reinstall the entire InterNIC database to correct the problem, according to one backbone provider. "It's a nightmare week for the Internet," says the head of a Santa Cruz Internet service provider. (Computer Reseller News 17 Jul 97) ** WEB COSTS HIGH, REVENUE LOW ** Companies are paying top dollar to workers to design and manage their Web sites, and the costs far exceed the revenues generated, according to a survey by Buck Consultants. A typical company spends $200,000 to $300,000 a year on salaries, bonuses and benefits for Web workers, but the survey of 104 companies found only 15 of them use their sites to generate revenue. Most companies use their sites to post financial and product information. One respondent says the "big myth of the Internet" is that it generates sales. In fact, he says, it's really a way to create dialogue between the customers, salespeople and employees. Despite the lack of payoff, few companies plan to reduce their Web efforts. "It's peanuts compared to running a major advertising campaign," says the director of information systems for Sonesta Hotels & Resorts. (USA Today 16 Jul 97) ** CREDIT CARD COMPANIES AGREE ON SECURITY STANDARD ** Visa and MasterCard say they've agreed on a set of technical standards for secure electronic transactions, called SET 1.0. The two companies are already running pilot programs to test the standards in 25 countries, and hope to introduce the standard to the general market at the end of this year. "If we work together as an industry, this will go a lot faster," says Visa's senior VP for I-commerce. The companies hope that the new standard will be in wide use by next year. "We look at it as a way to have now, finally, a one-on-one relationship with our consumer," says Jim McDermott, VP of new technology for PolyGram Records. "At some point, it's a lot easier to send a digitized file across twisted pair or satellite, or whatever it is, into somebody's home directly." He expects a "cottage industry" to develop that will attempt to jump-start the transition before major record labels catch up. McDermott sees several factors that need to be in place before direct distribution is practical: increased bandwidth, reliable encryption, and transactional capabilities and portability. In addition, there will need to be a basic change in the relationship between the artist and the label to enable the introduction of a direct -- and more occasional -- online distribution system. "Every couple of months in the '60s, the Beatles put out a single and people bought it. This model supports that. It's going to change the dynamic between the recording companies and the artists." (Broadcasting & Cable 30 Jun 97) ** STRATEGIES: HOW TO WRITE WINNING ADS ON THE WEB AND MAKE A GAZILLION ** A study by one of the leading Internet advertising agencies, a New York company called DoubleClick, found that after the fourth impression of an ad on a surfer's attention, response rates drop from 2.7% to under 1%, creating "banner burnout" -- indicating that the banner has a poor return on investment. What are some things that work? Bright colors help, and simple animation tends to increase response rates by 25%, and commands and questions like "Click here" or "Looking for a bargain?" increase them by 15-18%. But although offers of free goods and services can dramatically improve click-through, statements creating a psychological sense of urgency tend to decrease response rates. (AlleyCat Information Sciences Inc., "It Pays To Double Click," AlleyCat News Jul 97) ** INNOVATIONS: THE QUIET CHIP ** BBN Systems and Technologies has developed the QuietChip -- a computerized anti-noise system for automobiles that can make a ride as quiet as it is smooth. "It's a very strange feeling to be driving along and to turn it on," says the chip's inventor. "Your first reaction is that the car in the next lane suddenly got louder." But what's really happened is that all the sounds from your own car -- the hum of the engine, the whine of the tires -- have almost disappeared. The QuietChip works by analyzing the noise made by a car, calculating a carefully matched sound wave that will cancel that noise out, and sending the signal to the car's radio speakers (it works even if the radio's on). The QuietChip will be marketed to automobile companies sometime next year.
