The focus for this article is the experiences Haddad has accumulated over the last three months as he has watched his 10 year old son use an eMate for nearly all his homework. ** NEW NEWTON INFORMATION SOURCE ** Dave Brightbill notes the creation of "The Daily Newton" was announce via the following messaging board site at: . The Daily Newton plans to release a daily digest of Newton news, announcements, tips, hints, etc. ... You can hopefully learn more via The Daily Newton WWW site at: . ** THREE YEARS OF NEWTNEWS ** Steve Holden writes: Back on 16Jun94, 'Newton News' was published. All 111 lines of it or a very small 4.3K. Those were the days of the MP110, 2400 baud modems, and a great deal of patience. Soon, there after 'NewtNews' was born as a 'true' newsletter -- WWW site, listserver, advertisements, deep content. A Newton community has also grown on the Internet via USENET News, the Web, FTP sites, and listservers. We are a dedicated bunch, that care deeply about this technology, and are very busy working together to 'change the world.' It is now three years and 142 issues later. This issue of NewtNews, like most of the ones before it, reflect a very growing and compelling Newton marketplace. No reason really to sing to the choir many will say, but NewtNews still stands as an example that dedicated evangelists can not only sing to the choir but also successfully preach to them. As we all look to the future, it is with much anticipation that things will blossom even more with Newton, Inc. A smaller Newton, a bigger Newton, a wireless Newton, a 'smart phone' Newton, a 'TV/VCR' Newton, a 'Newton on a Stick' -- are all compelling solutions in their own right. The key for Newton, Inc. and its' licensees is to pick which ones of these are most important and go after them with a vengence & dedication that originally created the Newton back in the early 1990's. $-----------$------------$------------$------------$-----------$-----------$ The New WriteRight Screen Enhancements protect your screen from scratches, reduce glare and improve your handwriting recognition by simulating the feel of writing on paper. No word on speed, availability, or price though. This could be a very vertical solution, so don't get your hopes up. ** KUDOS ** Doing NewtNews for the last three years has definitely been a pleasure most of the time, and a chore some of the time. It is also always very hard to thank people because I always worry I'll miss someone who thinks they should be mentioned. I hate nothing more than disappointing someone. But the following folks, definitely deserve to be publically recognized and thanked by name for all their hard work, dedication, and support to NewtNews: - Christy Holden - Bob Torres - Mark Heringer - Dave Hina I'd also like to thank: - Apple's Newton System Group for such a great product - NewtNews advertisers - NewtNews readers ** WIN A HANDHELD SYSTEMS SUBSCRIPTION ** If you have a mailing address in the United States or Canada you can win a one year subscription to Handheld Systems magazine by sending an email to NewtNews at: with the following in the subject line "Handheld Developer Give-A-Way" by 12 noon (PST) on 07Jul97. The goal of this contest is give an up-and-coming Newton developer access to a great handheld programming resource, so please only enter this contest if you have a goal of being a Newton programmer. We will announce the random winner in the future issue NewtNews-145-08Jul97. Thanks! [EDITOR: I changed the dates because of some distribution problems on our side of things.] ** WHO'S IN CHARGE OF THE MAILING LIST?!? ** The 'great' NewtNews email listmaster Bob Torres is still on a 'study trip' and should be back ASAP (hopefully). So, the NewtNews email list is still my hands. Hopefully I won't screw up NewtNews' distribution, but if you get 10 copies of NewtNews in your mailbox you'll at least know who to blame. If for some reason you don't get NewtNews check it out on the WWW -- I have 'mastered' the art of posting to the WWW. ;-) $-----------$------------$------------$------------$-----------$-----------$ From your armchair, find your favorite shows using your Newton. ClubPDA also provided its readers with a URL to the latest Newton OS 2.1 update, news that the Vol. 3 ClubPDA catalog is now shipping, and that they are slowly getting Apple MP2K accessories shipped to them. For more information check out: . ** NEW NEWS FROM FOUNDATION SYSTEMS ** Adam Tow recently posted to his WWW site the Foundation Systems Newsletter, Volume 1, Number 2 (6/12/97). You can check it out at: . This edition covers amoung other things: Recent Announcements; Details on NewtonID; and Works in Progress. It should also be noted that Foundation Systems has released "WriteHere 2.0 Public Beta 10 -- 6/12/97". Not only does this support NewtonID but there are now hooks to use other handwriting recognition engines (HWR) within WriteHere like Graffiti if Graffiti is installed. ** WIN AN EMATE AT TACO BELL ** James Staten reports that Taco Bell is currently holding a contest in conjunction with the new Batman and Robin film that will give-a-way Apple eMates. The eMates are also part of Taco Bell TV ads, but aren't mentioned by name. The eMate and Apple's 20th Aniversary Macintosh are reportedly heavily featured in the movie. John Apfelbaum noted the following on the USENET newsgroup comp.sys.newton.misc: They are giving away 40 of them. The odds of winning an eMate are 1:3,352,000 (from memory, but it is close). My girlfriend and I went there last night and each ordered the X-Large drink that gives you 2 instant win chances (4 total). We won 2 orders of cinnamon twists -- odds 1:8. Doing a little math, I calculated that I will have eaten 415,625 orders of cinnamon twists before I win an eMate. My food order that got me 4 game pieces was approx US$8.90. The eMate could cost as much as US$7,398,125. (Not including medical expenses from eating 831,250 meals at Taco Bell.) Of course if I win the US$20,000 prize I can buy a bunch of eMates, but I will have to drink 1,662,500 gallons of Taco Bell beverages before the end of the contest. [EDITOR: The above is suppose to be humorous. It is not a thesis on proper and accurate probability theory. If you have a problem with the math, please make a note of it and send it back to yourself so at least you'll know the right answer. ;-)] ** NEW GPS NEWTON SOFTWARE ** TeleType GPS reports that they will have a booth (#502 main floor) at PC Expo that runs 17-19Jun97 in New York City to show off their new GPS software for the Newton and Windows CE. The article is pretty well written, and includes a Q&A with Sandy Bennett, and has a good quote by Jay Wright of Wright Strategies -- "My faith in the future of Newton has increased now that they have their own resources and the ability to allocate them as they best choose." Baker/Pillar reported that Rebecca Eisenberg also had another Newton specific article entitled "The Birth of the Way-New Newton" on Netly News published on 09Jun97. The article has the typical historical perspective but then really warms up to the latest generation of Newton devices. The article notes that while the price is high for a MP2K, apparently the 10,000+ sold in the first six weeks since launch didn't discourage the faithful. [EDITOR: It should be noted that Will Nelson posted his take on the interview to comp.sys.newton.misc in a post entitled "interview with Sandy Benett in Sunday S.F. Chron/Examiner". Will pointed out that you can probably read the review online at: .] ** SEVERAL OTHER NEWTON MENTIONS ** Michael Goldstein <75300.3144@compuserve.com> has a Newton mentioned in the "Talking Tech" section of Successful Meetings published Jun97. The article is entitled "Pocket-Sized Contenders: Maintain contact from anywhere you roam with a handheld PC." The Newton referenced in the article is the MP130 and Goldstein takes issue with the price, weight, and size when compared to Windows CE, PalmPilot, or Psion. But does note several Newton strengths: handwriting recognition, sketching, and "best" screen. In the end, Goldstein recommends Windows CE devices, but does suggest a "try before you buy" tactic. Wendy Webb has a short Newton and PalmPilot mention in an article called "A Traveling Presenter's Toolkit - No matter how well you plan and prepare for a presentation on the road, your success partly depends on the tools you take with you" published in Presentations magazine (June 1997) with the article starting on page 37. The Newton mention is in the "You Are What You Pack" section under PDA. She notice that PDAs in general are ideal for many in the traveling presentation world because they can store nearly all the information you need for a trip (names, dates, locations, notes, etc. ...). Mac-The-Knife on page 70 of MacWeek published on 09Jun97 has a new Newton, Inc. rumor -- new Newton devices from this organization will in the near future ship without the Apple logo, and hints that a new logo for the devices could be in the works. For more information check out: . New Media published on 23Jun97 had a small pointer and a picture of a MP130 on page 24 that examines the Newton solution Shot Logger Super Systems by Production Magic. This solution helps track film logging times using a MessagePad 2000 and an wireless SMPTE time-code PC Card. A complete system costs US$3295. For more information check out: or call: 802.864.0278. Dale K. notes on comp.sys.newton.misc that you can also learn more about this solution by checking out the following URL: . The Financial Post published on 10Jun97 has an article entitled "Palmtops vie to catch executives' eyes" written by Susan Noakes. The article mentions Microsoft's Windows CE and notes the following companies are manufacturing HPCs: Compaq, Hitachi, Casio, HP, LG Electronics, NEC, and Philips. The article mentions how Sharp has stuck with their Zaurus series, and how the PalmPilot has captured the hearts of many mobile executives. The Newton is only mentioned in passing but is noted to have a "solid" market. The MP2K is one of four devices listed at the end of the article (Compaq PC Companion, HP 320LX, and NEC MobilePro were the others). You might be able to track down the article via: . Roger Coleman notes that he got a letter to the editor placed in the latest edition of MacUser UK urging them to take the Newton more seriously and for them to cover the Newton market more closely. ** OTHER ARTICLES OF POTENTIAL INTEREST ** - "Wireless Net Offers Low Cost, Reliability: Startup taps smart missile technology with new Triton Network Systems (TNS) microwave network" by Stephanie Lapolla, PC Week, 09Jun97, page 1 - "New Notebooks Come Ashore: U.S. version of Libretto leads a parade of portables from Toshiba, IBM" by James Gruener, PC Week, 09Jan97, page 58 - "Micropayments: No Small Change -- Micropayment schemes promise to make the Web profitable - one penny at a time." by Eric Brown, New Media, 23Jun97, page 30 - "SONET is in the air: Philadelphia utility zips LAN traffic over radio-based SONET net" by Charles Bruno, Network World, 09Jun97, page 61, - "Hydra rears its head: Microsoft to unleash 'super-thin client'" by Rob Trott, InfoWorld, page 6 ** MAJOR WEEKLY MAGAZINE WEB POINTERS ** - Web Week: - MacWeek: - InfoWorld: - Computer Reseller News: - PC Week: - Network World: - LAN Times: - Information Week: $-----------$------------$------------$------------$-----------$-----------$ K2 consultants, Inc. has the best Medical titles for Newton. A total of 42 markets are being reportedly serviced by the Sprint PCS consortium. The goal according to Sprint PCS CEO Andrew Sukawaty is have a nationwide 100% digital wireless network. [John Wilen, InfoWorld, page 63] PC World has awarded Motorola's PageWriter (two-way pager) with their 1997 World Class Award in the wireless communications category. [HeadsUp] DataQuest is reporting that PCS wireless infrastructure spending grew by 63% in 1996 to US$5.3 billion up from US$3.3 billion in 1995. Lucent captured 37.2% of the market, followed by 23% for Ericsson. Other players included: Motorola CIG, Northern Telecom, Nokia, and QUALCOMM. [Farcast] Eutelis (a French research company) is projecting a tripling of European pager users by the Year 2001. Currently only 1.5% of the European population uses pagers compared to 16% in the U.S. and 30% in Singapore. [Farcast] Motorola has a new processor called the '68181 - FLEX decoder' that will make it easier to create 'roaming FLEX paging decoder' solutions. The chips will reportedly be first sampled by Korean paging manufacturers. "All we're doing is building a new pipeline," says the project's general manager. "But instead of pumping a commodity (natural gas), we'll pump data." The strategy behind the new service is to build on the utility's solid consumer base by offering more services: "We've found that when people move, they call their electric or gas utility first," says a consultant. "It's a good opportunity for a utility to sell other services." The wireless service charge is then tacked onto the bottom of the utility bill. Other utilities are experimenting with selling Internet access or other data services, in an effort to enhance their customer relationships. (Tampa Tribune 9 Jun 97) ** GEORGIA TECH SCORES VICTORY IN FRENCH LAWSUIT ** A French court has ruled that the Georgia Institute of Technology -- the American university accused of violating France's law forbidding the sales of goods and services in a single language unless that language is French -- may continue an English-only Web site describing the activities of its satellite operation in the city of Metz in Lorraine, France. However, the decision was made on narrow grounds, and does not settle the issue of whether the French law applies to the Internet or whether Georgia Tech violated it. The director of Georgia Tech Lorraine, no doubt remembering Tech's football glory days, said: "A victory is a victory is a victory. Whether the halfback or quarterback scores, it's still a touchdown." But the ruling may be appealed by the two groups that brought the suit -- the Defense of the French Language and the Future of the French Language. (Atlanta Journal-Constitution 10 Jun 97) ** DIGITAL SEEKS "NO GAB" ORDER ** Digital has filed a motion to prevent a former employee now working at Intel Corp. from divulging information about his previous work. Also, as part of the move, Digital has asked that Intel be ordered to preserve correspondence, including e-mail, regarding the patent infringement lawsuit Digital recently filed against Intel. "This is a huge area because every engineer knows something about his or her employer that the employer doesn't really want to share with the competition," says an antitrust attorney. Digital says its real purpose in making the request is to prevent other former Digital employees now working at Intel from violating Digital's confidentiality agreement. (Wall Street Journal 13 Jun 97) ** CHEAPER CHIPS = CHEAPER PCs ** Intel has found a way to shrink its Pentium and Pentium MMX chips by about 10%, thereby raising the number of chips it can squeeze onto a single silicon wafer and cutting manufacturing costs per unit. As a result, the company plans to reduce the price of a 200 MHz Pentium MMX processor from $492 to about $240 in July. "That shows aggressive pricing," says an industry observer. "Intel's strategy is to make sure MMX plays through all price points." The new prices will mean computer manufacturers will be able to offer $1,000 desktop machines and $1,500 notebook PCs later this summer. (InfoWorld Electric 13 Jun 97) ** TECH BUDGETS UP IN '97 ** A recent poll of 500 information systems executives indicates that in the majority of cases, there's more money for technology expenditures this year than last. Computer Economics found that only 27% reported budget cuts, while 16% saw no change. The biggest budget item was hardware, with spending on networks especially strong. "Mostly because it's terrifically profitable," says author David Shenk in his book, "Data Smog." "The goal of the information industry is to convince consumers that, whatever they have, it isn't enough. That strategy reaps billions of dollars every year for programmers, manufacturers, marketers, and public relations professionals. If Windows 95 felt like old news in 1996, that's because Microsoft planned it that way. Since Microsoft makes most of its profits on upgrades, the real product it is selling isn't hardware or software but information anxiety. It works. At the beginning of this decade, IBM found that people were replacing their computers every five years. By 1995, users were considering their machines obsolete in just two years. What they only yesterday regarded as critical machinery they now saw as useless plastic. Overall, by the year 2005, the nation will have tossed some 150 million computers onto the scrap heap." (David Shenk, "Data Smog," HarperEdge 1997, excerpted in Technology Review May/Jun 97) ** STRATEGIES: RESULTS-BASED EDUCATION ** Training consultant John R. Murphy says it's time to abandon a "competency-based curriculum approach" to coworker training and replace it with a "results-based development approach." He says there are two basic principles of learning and results: first, people learn when they have to produce results they don't know how to achieve; and second, people learn from experience that simultaneously produces results and new skills. "Management training's reputation for failing to impact business results stems from the simple fact that it isn't aimed at results" -- it's aimed at "getting ready to get ready, and puts everyone to sleep." But give people a real task for which they are personally accountable and you give people a learning focus: "When you see the spontaneous combustion that occurs when personal accountability for critical near-term results runs headlong into a serious gap in skills or knowledge, you feel that the secret of human development has suddenly been revealed to you." (John R. Murphy, "Results First, Change Second," Training May 97) ** INNOVATIONS: IBM'S FUTURE VISION ** IBM recently offered its vision of the future, including Video Doorbells that allow you to leave a voice message for visitors when you're not home and a digital camera linked to a PC or printer that displays a picture of your would-be guest. When hooked up to a modem, the Video Doorbell could even convey that information to your office or car. Meanwhile, Home Director appliance-control software (already installed on Aptiva machines sold through Radio Shack) can manage your home appliance functions either from your PC, or in the future, from a remote location using a push-button phone. "Incidental computing" is a big part of IBM's vision -- computers geared toward various capabilities scattered around the house, including the kitchen, where one could monitor your larder, restock when necessary and offer recipe suggestions; and a Room With a View, which combines a dinner table, workstation and family entertainment center into an area where family members can sit around and do their own computer thing via separate monitors embedded at each seat at the table, or collaborate on a multimedia game or other activity. "We're changing the metaphor of how people interact with information," says an IBM spokesman, who hastens to add that Room With a View, like many of IBM's concepts, will probably be much different from its current form if and when it ever hits the consumer market.
