Administrivia Top News -------- ** FUTURE OF NEWTON AT APPLE?!? ** The following was published in a recent edition of Edupage. Other sites like MacWeek also covered this story STEVE JOBS WANTS APPLE TO DUMP THE NEWTON Apple founder Steve Jobs, who was forced out of the company by then-CEO John Sculley but who now serves as an advisor to current-CEO Gil Amelio, says Apple ought to sell off its Newton technology used to produce handheld computers. Wearing worn jeans with patches, Jobs told a meeting of Apple developers that the company could manage two software projects at a time (Mac/OS and the next-generation "Rhapsody") but not three (those two plus the Newton operating system). Instead of working on the handheld Newton, Jobs thinks that Apple should be developing stripped-down "network computers" that could be used by "mere mortals" as alternatives to PCs in accessing information and software from the Internet. (San Jose Mercury News 17 May 97) And this was posted to TechWeb: In response to a question on whether Apple was brushing up its Newton handheld to possibly sell it off, Hancock said: "Newton is a viable platform. We are looking to our Newton partners for financial help." Sources have said that Apple explored selling the Newton business. In addition, sources said, Apple has talked to venture-capital companies about spinning the business off as a separate company. In related news, also at Apple's World Wide Developers Conference (WWDC), Apple Fellow Guy Kawasaki was asked after the H.I.D.E. awards at WWDC in an informal question and answer session about what he 'thought' about the Newton. He said he really likes using the latest Newton hardware products from Apple -- especially the eMate -- and could make a case for the Newton to be its own separate company. [EDITOR: Word on the street is that something should happen soon. Very soon. Also the eMate is selling very well, and should be in the 100,000+ range of shipped units faster than anyone could even imagine. There is also word of a big 500+ purchase of MP2Ks by United States Department of Agriculture for data collection project.] ** NEW STUFF FROM NSG ** Keith Rollin reports that the Newton System Group (NSG) has posted an updater for their WinNTK 1.6 (developer tool) via: . It should also be noted that Apple has also recently updated their version of Newton Connection Utilities (NCU) to version 1.0 (after being an announced product some 15+ months ago). Check out the recently redesigned NSG pages at: for more information. ** GOLFER'S GAME TRACKER UPDATED ** Sun Sabre Software has announced the release of version 3.0 of their ScorePad application for the Newton -- especially for the new 'very popular' MP2K and eMate devices. ScorePad makes it 'very easy' for golfers to keep scores and personal statistics about their golf games. The software retails for US$50 and you can purchase the software online via Software Unboxed at: . You can learn more, and get access to a demo via the following site: . Previous registered owners who purchased ScorePad in 1997 get an upgrade to version 3.0 for free, others can upgrade for US$10. I definitely think, given my experiences at last weeks Apple's World Wide Developers Conference (WWDC) that Apple should spin the Newton out of Apple. They have way too much to worry about, and to 'fund' in the Mac OS and Rhapsody arenas to keep and worry about their Newton business. BTW ... Rhapsody in demo mode and in theory is very cool. I was completely impressed with the direction this desktop operating system is taking. I think that Apple has addressed the problems they have faced in the past, and are moving forward with a strong vision and mission. ** POINTER TO NEWTON STAND ** In last weeks NewtNews I accidently gave the impression that the above banner would have a URL that 'pointed' to the "Executive Newton Stand". Instead my intent was to point readers to the designer that created the "Executive Newton Stand" -- Richard Martin of Ebonist, Fine Furniture & Design. Many of you [SDH: Thanks!] send me the correct pointer to the page for the stand. So here it is: - To learn more about Ebonist, check out: - . ** 'NOT' AN ANSWER TO THE WORD DOC ON TRAVEL PROBLEM ** Mark Zeren didn't have a Newton solution but pointed out that the current Windows CE devices and software would also have this problem since like the Newton the majority of the 'document translation' on the Windows CE is desktop based. ** COMMENTS ABOUT USING EMAIL ON NEWTON LAST WEEK ** I posted my near gibberish outline of my Newton email experience to the end of NewtNews. Sorry for the semi-disconnect on the article, but I have been under extreme pressure to get a ton of stuff done at the moment, and unfortunately don't have the time for a polished article. I figured getting something was better than getting nothing. Comments are welcome. ** WHO'S IN CHARGE OF THE MAILING LIST ** The 'great' NewtNews email listmaster Bob Torres is on a 'study trip' for the next couple of weeks, and has left the NewtNews email list in my hands. Hopefully I won't screw up NewtNews' distribution, but if you get 10 copies of NewtNews in your mailbox you'll at least know who screwed things up. If for some reason you don't get NewtNews check it out on the WWW -- I have 'mastered' the art of posting to the WWW. ;-) ** CORRECTION ** Last week we incorrectly mentioned that Foundation Systems' recently announce BackLight Plus utility was 'freeware'. It is not -- it is US$15 but does include a 30-day trial version. For more information or to download BackLight Plus check out: . The unit should keep your internal battery from being drained while hooked up to Luna II and the hardware add-on only costs US$99. For more information: . ** RELEASE THE TEXT TO SPEECH TECHNOLOGY ** Jeff Wright has three very good reasons why Apple should Quality Control their 'text to speech technology' for the MP2K and release the software for general use. Currently the software is being distributed 'illegally' by those lucky enough to get a hold of it. The reasons are (and they are beyond just 'gee-whiz' factors): 1. Helps children learn to write because the Newton will convert their handwriting and if the handwriting is 'correct' they can then have to spoken back to them. 2. Helps blind people to learn write using the same scenario as above, but the voice feedback from the Newton really empowers them. 3. Helps speaking and hearing impaired to 'easier' communicate with folks by letting them write what they want to say and have their 'Newt voice' heard. You can reach Tim via: . It should also be noted that Tim is "an Internet Software Developer, with the Mercury Center, SJMN." [EDITOR: Tim only plays a 'journalist' on TV, in reality he'd much rather be called a 'Net Geek.' Which given some of the 'journalists' at SJMN it is totally understandable. ;-)] Dan Levin snail mailed the complete article that appeared in Sunday Times (05Apr97) entitled "Apple upgraded palmtop wins over a new generation of fans" by David Hewson. The article is a very good read and also mentions the 3rd party solution called "Expense Plus" as an example of a 'beauty' Newton solution. The author of the article is an experienced Psion and Windows CE user, so his very positive and several negative comments about his MessagePad 2000 experience are very important. You can learn more about the Sunday Times via: . ** WIRED, JUNE 1997 ** This issue of Wired (should be available by now in the stores) focuses on how to save Apple -- the front cover suggests 'praying' and inside there are 101 other ideas, edited by James Daly, starting on page 114. The list is good -- but at time contradictory and at times totally unrealistic. As far as the Newton goes, several mentions in this issue including: - page 48: Ashley Craddock covers the recent news that the U.S. Marine Corps used Newton devices in their 'futuristic' Hunter Warrior exercises. The 'high-tech' Marine units with Newtons number 1500 soldiers and significantly 'beat-up' the 'non-tech' units numbering 4500. - page 57: Apple MessagePad 2000 ad - page 116: In the 101 ideas column -- #15 is "Dump (or outsource) the Newton, eMate, digital cameras, and scanners." - page 119: In the 101 ideas column -- #59 is "Invest heavily in Newton technology, which is one area where Microsoft can't touch you. Build voice recognition and better gesture recognition into Newton, making a new environment for desktop, laptop, and palmtop Macs. Newton can also be the basis of a new generation of embedded systems, from cash registers to kiosks." - page 120: In history of Apple column -- "Apple releases Newton personal digital assistant; great idea, poor execution." - page 121: In the 'famous' people comments on what Apple should do -- Nathan Myhrovold at Microsoft mentions the Newton in a list of things Apple 'wasted' resources on when they 'should' have been spending resources on the Macintosh ** SEVERAL OTHER NEWTON MENTIONS ** Apple has a full page MP2K ad on page 12 of MacWeek published on 12May97. [EDITOR: It should be noted that MacWeek has a new look and feel, along with some new features and formats. Check it out!] Apple also ran their "Only Apple" 8 page ad in the 12May97 edition of PC Week starting on page 42. This series features the Power Macintosh 6500/300, the Power Macintosh 7300/180 PC Compatible, the eMate 300 (big picture), and the MessagePad 2000 with keyboard (small picture). Apple also ran a two-page ad starting on page 40 of InfoWorld (12May97) for there 240-MHz PowerBook 3400. Reuters ran a story on 12May97 that included a Newton mention. The article was in reference to the recent news about handheld computer shipments in 1996 -- PalmPilot shipments rose by 29%; should rise by 27% in 1997; and in 1996 the PalmPilot had 51% of the complete market out of a total 1.6 million units. Windows CE device did not do as well as expected, but the Newton "sold relatively well" and "gained popularity [with] order-entry [workers]." There was also a story about this subject posted to: . DataQuest and PC Data Research were the reported research firms that conducted this data. [inews] Bill Houle at NCR Corporation has a letter to the editor published in the 12May97 edition of Information Week with a Newton mention. He says nice things about the MP2K but notes that if Apple decides to keep the Newton it must not treat the Newton like they treated their Macintosh product. The article was in reference to a 28Apr97 article called "Newton Dilemma" published on page 85. According to sources on CompuServe the magazine Nation published on 06May97 has a MessagePad 2000 review in it. The article has 'glowing' things to say about the MP2K, and also mentions that the MP2K will ship in parts of Europe, Australia and select Asia-Pacific countries by the end of the month. Other tidbits include: many applications for the Newton exist on the Internet; the Newton is still popular in the vertical markets like health care, field service, and sales force automation; and that several hardware developers are using the Newton to build custom information appliances with this technology. This whine has been referred to in many Usenet posts and Apple Support on the Developers page maintains that the whine is normal. ** QUICK HWR GESTURES ON MP120, OS2.0 ** The features that I use more than anything else on my MP120 are these gestures. These are documented in the Newt manual, but I thought I'd point them out incase anyone has missed them! They seem to work everywhere: To insert a space between to words accidentally joined together, write an upside-down 'v' just below where you want the space to be. To remove a space, write a 'v' just below the space that you don't want. There is a knack to writing the marks in just the right place, but it's worth having a go! ** NON-LINKED CHECKLIST COPYING ** Finally, last week's tip about copying bulleted checklists has prompted this response from one reader : "Do you know how to duplicate a checklist without items remaining linked?" The move is viewed as Microsoft's response to Oracle's and Sun Microsystems' focus on network computers -- devices similar to terminals in that they rely on central servers for most functions, but with more processing power than a simple terminal. The multi-user capability will be added to the current Windows NT 4.0 version, and will be an integral part of 5.0. (Wall Street Journal 12 May 97) ** NETSCAPE PLEDGES TO STICK WITH BE ** Netscape Communications plans to release a version of its FastTrack server, designed for Be Inc.'s BeOS operating system. "There's a lot of developer excitement around Be," says a Netscape spokeswoman. "Be is uniquely designed to be a very fast platform. For a Web server, that means you'll see a lot of performance." The move is endorsed by Mac clone maker Power Computing, which says it plans to ship the BeOS with its new line of PCs. (TechWire 12 May 97) ** UNIVERSAL DISCONTENT ON THE NET ** In the four months since the FCC solicited public comment on proposals to charge Internet users in some way in order to subsidize universal access, the 300,000 respondents are almost universally united on one point -- any attempts by the government to impose a per-minute access charge on Internet service providers would almost certainly result in those costs being passed directly on to consumers. "Since when is singling out one type of user of a public service for additional usage fees acceptable? If additional fees are necessary, make it a universal fee charged to all regardless of how they use the service above a preset length of time, or have every phone company charge a premium for unlimited use," says one. "Perhaps instead of trying to gouge the public again, phone companies should answer a few simple questions: Are we still making a reasonable profit? Can we reduce expenses instead of asking for another rate increase? Have we cut out the waste and inefficiencies in our operation? Are our top executives' salaries and benefits in excess of $1 million per year per person? If yes, go back to questions #2 and #3," suggests another. (tele.com May 97) ** DIGITAL SAYS INTEL STOLE DESIGN FOR PENTIUM ** Digital Equipment Corporation has filed a lawsuit charging that Intel Corporation stole Digital's patented chip designs and used them to create Intel's Pentium chips. Although declining to specify the amount of damages his company is seeking, Digital's chief executive says: "What is obvious is that the numbers are huge. The time has come for these unlawful practices to stop and Digital intends to see that they do... If we prevail as we hope, it does change the industry quite a bit in terms of Intel's hegemony and monopoly inside the enterprise." Intel denies the charges and says it will defend itself vigorously. Wall Street was stunned by the development, and one analyst said that the lawsuit is "fraught with peril" for Digital, as Digital is a major user of Intel chips. (New York Times 14 May 97) ** NEW SET-TOP DEVICE CHALLENGES WEBTV ** A new $400 set-top box that links a user's TV set to the Internet is being marketed by Curtis Mathes Holding Corp. The UniView is the first direct rival to WebTV's $300 device, and unlike the WebTV product, UniView also acts as a speaker phone and fax machine, connects to a computer printer, and runs an on-screen TV guide. "We're hitting the TV viewer, not a computer person," says Curtis Mathes' CEO. Later this year the company plans to incorporate the device into a 36-inch screen TV set, which will sell for $2,000. (Wall Street Journal 17 May 97) ** CORBIS DROPS CD-ROM PROJECT ** Weakness in the CD-ROM market caused by competition from online content has led to a decision by Corbis Corp. to suspend a major CD-ROM project it had been working on: a biography of the photographer Ansel Adams. Corbis was formed in 1989 by Microsoft chief Bill Gates to develop an archive of digital images. "Virtually all the information required to forecast change is readily available... I found that one company's fortunes and its major decisions could have been predicted on the basis of information contained on its Internet home page. The home page contained all the company's press releases, executive biographies, letters from the president to shareholders, and help-wanted advertisements. Collectively, this information could have been used to identify the resource gaps faced by the company and to determine how long it would take to fill them." So the business intelligence problem is rarely one of having too little information. Many companies are "data rich" in that they have a lot of information about their competitors, customers, suppliers and other key stakeholders. However, without the proper analysis they are "intelligence poor." (Jonathan L. Calof, "For King And Country ... And Company," Business Quarterly Spring 1997) ** STRATEGIES: DON'T INVENT A WHEEL THAT YOU CAN BUY AT THE STORE ** The nature of technological competition has drastically changed: the winner now is not the organization that has the greatest research lab, but the one that is most adept at looking at what's available in the marketplace and choosing among a huge number of technological options the ones that can be integrated into the best product. "After all, what a company gets for the money it spends on R&D is what ultimately matters. In many industries, superior technology integration is the key to achieving superior R&D productivity and speed -- and superior products." There are two completely separate problems to solve: the need to stay at the technological cutting edge, and the need to deal with enormously complex environments. To be successful, you have to become skilled at technology integration; as a result, some of the most successful U.S. companies give their technology experts resources and mandates allowing them to evaluate a wide range of technological options. (Marco Iansiti & Jonathan West, "Technology Integration: Turning Great Research Into Great Products," Harvard Business Review May/June 97) ** INNOVATIONS: BLIMP TRANSMISSION ** Former Secretary of State Alexander Haig is a major investor in a novel plan to revive the dirigible and use it as an alternative to the communications satellite. Sky Station International's offerings will go head-to-head against other telecommunications providers, with plans to provide Internet access, telephony, videophone service and high-speed data networking to 80% of the world's population by 2005. The Sky Station system will involve 250 helium-filled blimps floating a mere 13 miles up, providing high bandwidth communications channels (up to 155 megabits per second for each customer). Receive dishes would be less than a foot in diameter, and would cost no more than $100 to $200. Sky Station plans to charge only about a dollar a day for use of the system, including unlimited cellular service (although that could change, says the company). The system still has several hurdles to overcome, including FCC cooperation in handing over the spectrum needed and a fool-proof plan for tethering the blimps and keeping them aloft (they weigh 11 tons each). One of the features of that control panel, among many others, is the ability to "lock out" the caps lock key. This allows those of us with big hands to type at full speed without activating the Caps Lock key when actually aiming at the "a" key. The control panel also allowed the user to enable the Caps Lock key only if both the Caps Lock and the Shift keys were depressed at the same time. With the much tighter dimensions of the Newton System Keyboard (and its perversely large Caps Lock key), this would be even more beneficial. I'd buy the extension that would fix this problem in a minute. Other Tidbits of Information ---------------------------- ** PAYING ATTENTION TO NET ADS ** A recent study by BBDO's Techsetter Hotline reports that "72% of Net surfers surveyed report that they do pay attention to ads found in online magazines." The survey also found that 23% of the respondents reported income of US$40-60K a year. My Email Experience Using MP2K During WWDC ------------------------------------------ by Steve Holden, ** INTRODUCTION ** Well, I left the PowerBook at home for this years Apple's World Wide Developers Conference (WWDC), and tried my best to handle my large amount of email via the MessagePad 2000. While, it should be possible, and might have been a better experience if I had done a little more experimenting, the end result was a lot of frustration. ** MUMBLED SUMMARY ** I basically had a lot of connection problems -- which isn't necessarily the fault of the Newton. But some 'connection' problems could have been related to over taxing NIE and Enroute when trying downloaded 50+ email messages at a time. You learn quickly to use the feature in Enroute to only download 10 messages at a time. Another handy Enroute feature is the ability to delete messages stored on your POP3 Server. A lost connection while downloading email is probably the worst thing that can happen because in most cases it screws up your POP3 Server into 'thinking' you haven't connected when in fact you have. For instance, one time after downloading the first 10 messages using Enroute, I lost my connection and had to reconnect. The POP server continued to want to send my original 10 messages that I had previously downloaded because Enroute didn't have the opportunity to clean itself up. Playing with all the settings in Enroute before going on the trip would have probably made things easier also, because I would have been more familiar with its features and GUI. Another hiccup was storage. Make sure you have enough room to download all your email. The Newton will keep filling up your card until about 50K is free and then it will basically just 'freezes' up and have to be restarted. Sidebar -- anyone notice how slow SMTP transactions are to send email?!? They seem to take around 3 times longer than doing a POP3 transaction to most of the Unix boxes I tried to read email from. The one Mac running EIM didn't seem to have the problem. Also, in general the Newton appears to be much slower at downloading email over the same connection speed that I have at home. ** COMMENTS ON FETCH AND EUDORA ** I had Fetch and Eudora demo versions installed on my system. I tried to use both, and had planed to use all three equally. It turned out to be harder than I wanted to deal with. They both 'worked' as well in some instances as Enroute, less so in others, and more so in even other situations. I can't honestly say one is better than the other, but I think they all are worth trying out and testing. Individual opinion will vary -- I am much more interested in a seamless solution that would work 99% of the time then to get into feature wars. ** WHAT I THINK I NEED?!? ** At first pass, I think that I need to make sure that I have a back-up copy of my email from a trip on another system that is getting backed up. I think that I need an 'intelligent' parser that forwards email of interest and importance to a 'mobile' account that has much less traffic then when I am in workstation mode. Getting access to the complete email archive while on travel is also pretty important, especially when you 'forget' to bring something with you (like the list of NewtNews readers who were interested in having a Newton meeting at WWDC). ** SO WHAT DID I END UP DOING?!? ** Basically I decided after Tuesday evening to use the Macintosh systems in the CyberStudio at WWDC to login to my Unix accounts and just do email via the command line and then upload my 'mbox' to my Mac when I got back into town. It worked ... it wasn't pretty ... but you can't complain to much when you are in a bind and just want to get things done. ** UTILITIES THAT WOULD BE COOL ** Some utilities that I thought of while using my MP2K at WWDC: - Backlight on/off by global key sequence - Battery indicator by global key sequence - HTML extensions tool bar (like BBEdit) for NewtWorks - Editing tool bar for NewtWorks (select then delete with one tap, insert custom text ("<>", "reported on USENET newsgroup comp.sys.newton.misc", etc ...)
