Administrivia Top News -------- ** APPLE REALLY PUSHING EMATE ** Apple sent out a series of 'education targeted' Apple eMate 300 press releases last week. One of the press releases talked about how well the eMate 300 is being accepted in the K-12 marketplace, and another noted that Apple is now offering eMates and eMate/Macintosh bundles to just about anyone. For example the Parent Buy Program runs until 15Jun97 and offers a Macintosh Performa 6400/180 with an eMate 300 for US$2299. For more info call: 800.434.3033 or visit: . There are other programs available like Campus Direct Individual Purchase Program at: 800.877.4433. And Apple Educator Advantage Home Computer Purchase Program at: 800.959.2775. Joe Holmes reported that you can get a postscript version of the Xerox Unistrokes paper via FTP at the following URL: . ** POCKETCHART V2.0 SHIPS ** T. For more information contact: Ebonist, Fine Furniture & Design 2040 Tigertail Blvd., Bay H Dania, FL 33004 954.926.5566 Or check out: . ** CAN THE MP2K DO THIS?!? ** A discussion over the weekend with a non-Newton user, NewtNews was 'tested' with this scenario: It is Monday morning, you just got on a plane for a week long business trip. You left your laptop at home, and are now a 'light weight' road warrior armed with a MessagePad 2000. After your very productive flight doing work on your MP2K, you get to your destination, check into your hotel, and log-on to your ISP to get your email. Everything is working fine, until -- Boss sends you a Microsoft Word document via email. She wants you to edit it, and then email it back as a Word document with all your changes. Can this be handled?!? At first pass, NewtNews doesn't see how. It seems to be OK if everything is handled as text, but otherwise it doesn't seem possible. Suggestions? Work arounds? ** I AM ON TRAVEL ** I will be Apple's WWDC all of next week (12-16May97). Which explains why you are getting NewtNews kind of earily (I finished on Sunday evening instead of Tuesday morning). I should have pretty good email connectivity so please don't hestitate to send me email. Check out the News page on the WWW site for any updates -- there aren't any Newton sessions on the official WWDC guide posted on Friday (09May97) so don't expect too much. ** SOME CORRECTIONS ** Aaron Propes correctly pointed out an error in the last NewtNews. We used the term 'expensive' instead of 'inexpensive' to describe the Gerber Scientific squegees that should make it easier to put on the WrightRight screen protectors. The squegees only cost US$1.50 (very cheap). For more info call Tierney Brothers (800.933.7337). Both Paul Mallett and David Wilson pointed out another error in last weeks NewtNews -- Apple was at Comdex UK sharing a very small 'mobile solutions' pavilion with Psion, Toshiba, and several Windows CE manufacturers. Both also noted though that the 'Apple fellow' doing the MP2K demos didn't seem to know very much about the new MP2K, and reported only receiving his MP2K the night before. In last weeks NewtNews we made a mistake and wrote that James Robertson was looking for a Newton programmer, when in fact he is a "Programmer for Hire." James has an interesting background, with a combination of vertical market skills, Newton experience, and a strong grounding in PC-based programming. Combined with professional desktop publishing, there isn't much he hasn't done. So NewtNews wishes him well in his search for further challenges in the Newton field. You can get in touch with him via: . $-----------$------------$------------$------------$-----------$-----------$ Need more Newton information?!? Erik Browne pointed out on the USENET newsgroup comp.sys.newton.misc that the San Jose Mercury News has a 'good' MessagePad 2000 review posted to the World Wide Web via: or or . This excellent, well researched article was written by Tim Colson , and according to Tim has an interesting story behind the article. Tim was originally only going to write a sidebar article to 'correct' some of the many mistakes in the dreaded New York Times MP2K article written by Mr. Manes that NewtNews has been commenting on for the last couple of weeks. But Tim did such a good job on the first pass of his 'sidebar' that his editor asked him to extended the article so that it could actually replace the Manes article in the Sunday edition of the San Jose Mercury News. Major NewtNews kudos for Tim! ** LONDON SUNDAY TIMES HAS MP2K MENTION ** Victor Eijkhout and Dan Levin both reported that the Sunday Times had a pretty good MessagePad 2000 review on 04May97 in the "Sounding Off" section. The article was by David Hewson (edited by Sean Hargrave), and was entitled "The MessagePad 2000 is fast, easy to use and comes with a decent bundle of e-mail, Web and office software: Apple's upgraded palmtop wins over a new generation of fans". For more info: . ** SEVERAL OTHER NEWTON MENTIONS ** Al Pizzo reports Newton mentions in the 07Apr97 edition of Design News on page 32. This article is about using a Newton and a Thermovision 900 camera together. Al also spotted a full page review of the MP2K on page 82 of Sales and Field Force Automation published for May97. NewtNews mentioned in a past issue of NewtNews that Mary Hayes had a great Newton article published on page 85 of the 28Apr97 edition of Information Week. NewtNews originally got the article via electronic distribution, and there is a difference between the electronic version and the print version -- specifically some pretty great marketing information is in the print edition. This is a definite must read if you have plans to market a product to the Newton community. Apple continues to publish their Only Apple ads in a host of tech magazines -- InfoWorld, MacWeek, and PC Week. The ads that feature the Power Macintosh 6500/300 and the 7300/180 (with PC Card) along with the MessagePad 2000 and eMate 300. There are also a number of MessagePad 2000 ads also showing up -- MacWeek, Wired (May97), and Byte Magazine (May97). Don Crabb has a passing mention of the MP2K and the eMate 300 in a list of new 'kick-butt' Apple technology currently available in his "The Mac Manager" column on page 36 of MacWeek published on 05Mar97. He also defends the Newton at: . Darell Ray reports the publication (18Apr97) of a pro-Newton Review that he wrote on Buzz Webster World Wide Web site at: . Danyll Wills has several Newton mentions in an article entitled "Apple wipes away the egg with latest Newton" published on 06May97 in the South China Morning Post. The article is about Easter Eggs and how some of the older Newton devices had the "Egg freckles" Easter Egg that came out of a cartoon by Garry Trudeau of Doonesbury fame. The article notes that Apple's current Newton devices are selling very well, and getting good reviews. Courant and Nick Mandich for supplying this week's tip! If you have similar tidbits for this column, please drop me a line at the email address above. Please include details of the Newt model and OS version with your tip. Thanks!! ** EXPERT DRAGGING AND COPYING IN NOTEPAD ** Copying items several times can be conducted by first dragging the item to the side of the screen, then double-tap and drag from the side of the screen (clipboard). This will leave the clipboard copy in place while allowing a copy to be placed wherever you desire. (This also works with items in 'Dates') Copying freeform note text to an outline creates a single topic. Outline to freeform text creates a single text block with headings tab indented. With bulleted items (also checklist items) you can copy an entire level by dragging the top level item to the side of the screen, then double-tap and drag from the side to place the copy. The interesting thing about creating a bulleted copy in this manner is that all the copies remain linked. For example, you copy a list that looks like this: o Top Level o Level 1 o Level 2 If you drag the "Top Level" or "Level 1" items by dragging to the side of the screen, you will also get its subordinates. If that money had been wisely invested, these organizations could have reaped $15 million per gigabyte over that same period. Judged by the costs involved in now fixing the problem, it was a "small price to pay." (Wall Street Journal 6 May 97) ** LAPTOP THEFT IS RAMPANT ** Last year, a record 265,000 laptop computers worth $804.8 million were stolen in the United States, according to SafeWare, a computer insurance firm. That number is up 27% from 1995. To combat the theft, companies are turning to asset management software, which records computer serial numbers, the employee assigned to the machine and other information, or theft software such as CompuTrace, made by Absolute. CompuTrace works by installing a hidden software program that automatically dials Absolute's headquarters every two weeks. The call is then traced by AT&T Canada and the phone number is cross-checked with the owner's file. If the number doesn't match up, the laptop is told to call the center again in five minutes. By tracing the phone call every five minutes, police can pinpoint the laptop's location. U.S. officials point out that CompuTrace couldn't work here, where companies are not allowed to use AT&T's automatic number identification information to sell services to a customer. (Investor's Business Daily 5 May 97) ** GTE TO ACQUIRE BBN ** GTE Corp. will purchase Internet pioneer BBN Corp. for $616 million, giving GTE control over BBN's high-powered network of routers, servers and specialized communications lines. The move instantly positions GTE as a major player in Internet communications, and gives it a broader base of networking assets from which to launch competitive strikes against AT&T and the Baby Bells. "This is big," says GTE's chairman. "This is the way to grow this company. We're getting ready for the 21st century." BBN currently provides much of the networking for AT&T's Internet services for businesses, but that contract could be canceled when the ownership changes. "We've made it clear since the beginning of our relationship with BBN that we would eventually move our business customers onto our own Internet backbone facilities," says an AT&T spokeswoman, who added that both companies are committed to making the transition painless for its customers. (Wall Street Journal 7 May 97) ** WHAT'S NEXT FOR THE MAC? ** Dan Ahlberg, a product manager in Apple's user-experience group, gives a preview of the Apple's next MacOS: "It will look more like a Mac than it will look like a Next machine, because there's a large installed Mac base. Where some of the Next functionality is going to be more apparent is where there are known to be some problems with the Mac interface, and where Next's technology is applicable for solving that. We need to make something that appeals to the novice and doesn't confuse them -- yet provide for customization that makes advanced users happy." Ahlberg says the next MacOS might even support a Unix command line for techies: "The majority of Macintosh users would never know that such a capability even could exist. But it may be made available. We've heard for a long time that some Mac users want access to a command-line interface." (Information Week 28 Apr 97) ** FRIENDLY INTERFACE IS STILL AN OXYMORON ** Michael Dertouzos, director of MIT's Laboratory for Computer Science, says software companies still have a long way to go in developing a truly "user-friendly" computer interface: "Calling these interfaces friendly is tantamount to dressing a chimpanzee in a surgical gown and parading him around earnestly as a surgeon." (Information Week 28 Apr 97) ** GATES TELLS EXECS TO "FULFILL YOUR WILDEST DREAMS" ** Microsoft chief executive Bill Gates told the more than 100 attendees of a "CEO Summit" convened in Seattle that they should plan to fulfill their "wildest dreams" because computing power will continue to increase rapidly in the years ahead." Urging them to focus their thoughts less on how technology will change in two years and concentrate more on how it will change in 10, Gates encouraged them to build company information systems that would be as fast and responsive as "digital nervous systems." "Just as fat has replaced starvation as a national concern, information overload has replaced information scarcity as an important new emotional, social and political problem." When asked in an interview to elaborate on how information overload is affecting people, Shenk replies: "Clearly, some people get very stressed out by the volume and the velocity of information. It can be very frustrating to keep up with the speed of information and stimulus, even if you enjoy it. Psychologists also have found a variety of other things that happen. Our judgment does get better and better (to a point), with more information. But our estimation of our judgment keeps going up with the amount of information we have. So there's the danger of overconfidence. There's also a very real danger, strangely, of decreased benevolence. Psychologists have found that as people are exposed to more and more stimulation and information, they become less benevolent to other people." (Interview in Investor's Business Daily 30 Apr 97) ** STRATEGIES: PREPARING FOR SHOCKS TO THE SYSTEM ** Crisis-management expert Otto Lerbinger says that, because of the complexity of modern life, more and more "everyday" decisions now require a crisis management perspective. Crisis managers need to learn to make decisions on the basis of incomplete and ambiguous information -- and simply to accommodate for unplanned events or unexpected shocks using a distinctively non-bureaucratic approach. Bureaucracy is no match for crises: "In a bureaucracy there are no surprises; every type of expected event has been classified and assigned to specified bureaucrats ... who find it difficult, if not impossible, to work under conditions of ambiguity and uncertainty." What should a crisis manager do? One of the first things on a to-do list is the creation or identification of "watchdog" systems to keep the organization apprised of threats and opportunities in the environment and to audit critical organizational decisions and behavior: "Crisis managers have learned the importance of detecting 'weak signals' that foretell 'big trouble.'"(Otto Lerbinger, "The Crisis Manager," LEA Publishers, 1997) ** INNOVATIONS: CHEAPER FLAT SCREENS ** With the cost of flat-screen TVs hovering in the stratosphere (anywhere from $10,000 to $25,000 for a 42-inch model), a new technology promises to deliver crisp, compact viewing at a much lower price -- $2,000 or less. The High-Gain Emissive Display (HGED) technology uses color phosphors similar to those in conventional cathode-ray tubes, modified to operate at extremely low voltage (under 100 volts). The matrix doesn't require transistors to address the pixels -- the phosphors are excited by electrons guided to the grid through special technology being developed by Telegen Corp., which claims several patents on the process. And because the HGED technology doesn't require the clean room conditions and micron tolerances of the other technologies, the HGED screens are less expensive to produce (about $1.30 per square inch versus $16 for LCD or plasma). In addition, unlike LCD screens, the viewing angle on an HGED product is not restricted. Telegen says its first HGED product will be a 20-inch desktop PC monitor, to be manufactured under license by IPC-Transtech, located in Singapore. What originally attracted me most about the Newton was the handwriting recognition. But I must admit that every time I get used to a new model (the 120 over the 110, the MP2K over the 120), I very rapidly think that the previous one was hopeless. Even now, after a few weeks of the MP2K, I think: "How could I ever have tolerated the 120? When I think that myself, I wonder why I was telling everyone how great it was." Anyhow, I have an MP2K which I like, but I saw an Apple ad for the eMate 300 that I bought as a present for my daughter through the mail with a credit card. (If you don't like it, you have 15 days to return it, so no risk.) It came a couple of days ago, and I tried it out myself. Although it's slower than the MP2K, its closer resemblance to a laptop is the big advantage. Suddenly you have a screen big enough to see clearly on, and a keyboard to write real articles or letters or long essays or papers for work. The keyboard is terrific too - the built-in keys do all sorts of things (overview, scroll) that you had to use the stylus for on the MP2K, and, once you're already using the keyboard for writing, that's a great advantage, as long as the keyboard is a decent size, not some miniature thing. You can really work with it, not just keep notes and addresses and lists. (You can do this with the MP2K too, but it's not quite as convenient having the keyboard separated and the small screen.) And the other great thing, compared to a Powerbook, is the instant-on/off. In short, some cross between the Newton and a Powerbook might be the best combination for mobile work, while a Pilot-size one might be best for casual out-of-office use.
