Description PowerPDQ is a utility to measure, tune and maximize battery usage on the Apple Newton MessagePad. PowerPDQ calculates a standardized benchmark rating for each battery usage cycle. The rating allows users to compare different batteries, and select the brand with the highest rating. The rating also facilitates measuring the effects of longer/shorter battery charging cycles. 2. Distribution PowerPDQ is distributed via the Internet as Freeware. Freeware allows you to try and use an application without purchase. If you continue to use PowerPDQ, you are requested to send in the NO FEE registration. 3. Registration Registration is free. Users will receive bug notices/fixes, update notices/discounts, and input into future versions. Registration Information: Your name: Address: Email: Comments: Do you have a Mac or PC? Where did you hear about NewtwarePDQ? Where did you get PowerPDQ? Email To: monica@openix.com 4. Disclaimer Users of PowerPDQ must accept the following disclaimer of warranty: "PowerPDQ is supplied as is. The author disclaims all warranties, expressed or implied, including, without limitation, the warranties of merchantability and fitness for any purpose. The author assumes no liability for damages, direct or consequental, which may result from the use of PowerPDQ." 5. Features PowerPDQ displays battery level, power drained, hours on, hours off, and a battery utilization rating. PowerPDQ gauges automatically scale for increased values. PowerPDQ automatically detects when the batteries have changed and presents the final usage statistics to the user. PowerPDQ supports/detects the use of an AC power adapter. 6. Limitations The Freeware version of PowerPDQ will not survive a reset. If the Newton is reset the battery statistics will clear. The Freeware version of PowerPDQ is calibrated for the OMP/MP100. If PowerPDQ is used on an MP110/120 the rating gauge will be incorrect. The PowerPDQ display does not update after it is opened. It must be closed and opened to view the current usage statistics. All statistics start at zero when PowerPDQ is installed. 7. Suggested Operation Follow these suggestions for the most accurate results: Change batteries prior to PowerPDQ installation. Install AC adapter just prior to powering on Newton. Remove AC adapter after powering off Newton. Change batteries soon after low power warning. If the Newton resets from low power, the statistics will be lost. 8. Battery Gauge The battery gauge displays the current battery power level. When a battery change is reported, this gauge displays the final battery power level. 9. Drained Gauge The drained gauge displays the battery power consumed in milli-amp hours. This figure is calculated using a nominal power consumption rate. The power consumption rate is the same used by Apple in quoting Newton operational characteristics. Actual power consumption (load) can exceed the nominal rate. Applications that are compute intensive, use animation, sound, or write to Flash RAM, will have higher consumption rates (see load guage in future enhancements). 10. Run Gauge The run gauge displays the total hours of battery on time. Usage with an adapter is not included in run time when in battery/AC mode. 11. Idle Gauge The idle gauge displays the total hours of battery off time. Off time using an AC power adapter would be included in idle time. Therefore, the AC adapter should be removed after the Newton is powered off. 12. Rating Gauge The rating gauge displays a standardized usage benchmark. The rating is useful to compare different brand batteries, and tune battery charging procedures. The rating normalizes power drained, and is relative to a benchmark battery. The benchmark battery selected is the Rayovac Renewal AAA. Actual ratings are effected by brand of battery, charging procedures, and application characteristics (see Drained Gauge). 13. Reset Action The reset action clears the current battery statistics. PowerPDQ automatically performs a reset after a battery change has been detected. The average user will not require this action. 14. Changed Action The changed action manually marks the batteries as changed, and displays the final usage statistics. PowerPDQ automatically performs a changed action after a battery change has been detected. The average user will not require this action. Power adapter users may wish to use this action. When in battery/AC mode, PowerPDQ can take up to 20 minutes to detect the batteries have changed. 15. Battery Only Action The battery only action enables battery only mode. If you do not use an AC power adapter, keep PowerPDQ in this mode. Battery only mode will usually detect the batteries have changed within 10 seconds after power on. Battery only is the preffered mode. 16. Battery/AC Action The battery/AC action enables battery/AC mode. If you use an AC power adapter, keep PowerPDQ in this mode. Battery/AC mode will usually detect the batteries have changed within 20 minutes after power on. Battery/AC mode users may wish to manually mark the batteries as changed by using the Changed Action. 17. Future Enhancements Enhancements to PowerPDQ (if there are some registered users) could include: o Make PowerPDQ reset tolerant o Battery load gauge, will estimate dynamic power consumption rate for greatly improved drained/rating measures o Estimated hours remaining gauge o Tap gauges to show actual value o User selectable OMP/100/110/120 o Overview window with gauge history o Ability to label batteries (for history) o Show date/time installed/changed -------------------------------------------------------------------------
