Librarian v1.5 --------------------------------------------------------------------- copyright 1995 Stand Alone & Ben Gottlieb * What's it do? --------------------------------------------------------------------- Librarian fixes several problems with the built in bookmaker, and addresses the (possible) need for one-handed book reading. It saves all information about the current book when you close it, so that when you next open it, you will be at the same page and your bookmarks and ink notations will still be intact. In addition, it places a small toggle switch next to the page number at the bottom which, when on, will make the power switch turn the page, enabling you to read a book with only one hand (and no stylus.) * What's in this archive? --------------------------------------------------------------------- There are four Newton software packages and three text files in this archive. They are: * Libraran.txt document you're now reading. 'Nuff said. * Libraran.pkg software package you'll install on your Newton. * SASReg.pkg software package you'll install on your Newton to enter the password you get when you register Librarian. * Register.txt read me file describing the Register software. * Register.pkg software package you can install on your Newton to use Register, which will allow you to pay for Librarian via email. * Installing Librarian --------------------------------------------------------------------- First off, you must get the Librarian software package onto your Newton. You can do this using the Newton Connection Kit (for Mac or Windows), the Newton Package Downloader, or the Newton Package Installer. See the documentaion with each of these for more information on installing packages with them. * Using Librarian --------------------------------------------------------------------- Once it's installed, Librarian will automatically save all information about a book when you close that book. This information is saved to a soup (like a file) and kept for 60 days. If information is more than 60 days old, it is discarded, so that old information does not build up. If you would like to use the power switch to turn the pages of a book, tap on the toggle switch (a little button with a dot in either the top or bottom half.) If the dot is in the bottom half, the power switch will put the Newton sleep as normal. If the dot is in the upper half, the power switch will turn the page (just like the down arrow.) Note: this also means that the Newton won't turn off as normal. * Registering Librarian --------------------------------------------------------------------- You have a 30 day trial period in which to examine Librarian, during which it will function fully. Should you wish to register, you'll need to do one of the following: * Send us a check for $10 to: Stand Alone 1146 Morse Ave., #3C Chicago, IL, 60626, USA * Using CompuServe, GO SWREG, and register ID # 6858. * Using Flash Sheridan's Register program (enclosed in the Librarian archive) and either NewtonMail (built into the Newton) or Catamount Software's Aloha (shareware, $50, for more info, contact Catamount at info@catamount.com). Open up Register, fill in the application (Librarian:SAS), the amount ($10), and your credit card information, and email it. However you register, PLEASE be sure to include an email address (it's not vital, but it will result in MUCH speedier service, no pun intended) and your name, as entered in the Prefs -> Personal section of your Newton. This is used to generate the password we send you to unlock Librarian, so it has to be exact. Once you register, you will receive a password from us. To use it, install the SAS Register package (also enclosed in the Librarian archive), select "Librarian" from the pop up menu at the top, and enter the password. You should get a message confirming the password. You may then remove the SAS Register application from you Newton. * Contacting us --------------------------------------------------------------------- If you have any questions regarding Librarian, or any other Stand Alone Newton application, please don't hesitate to contact us: Email: internet: info@standalone.com (<-- preferred) AOL: PDC Ben eWorld: Gottlb CompuServe: 76342,3057 Phone: Voice: (312) 262-5150 Fax: (312) 262-5148 Regular Mail: Stand Alone 1146 Morse Ave., #3C Chicago, IL, 60626, USA * Other Stand Alone Products --------------------------------------------------------------------- Stand Alone offers a full range of products for the Newton MessagePad. For a current list, send mail to products@standalone.com, with the title "Newton Products", and we will mail it back to you. Here is a list that's current at the time Librarian was released. Speed: Speed is a collection of improvements to the built in names file. The main one is a modification to the filing system that speeds it up by as much as 1000%. It also allows emails address to be viewed in the card view, and provides several methods of quickly accessing the names file. (shareware) El'barqs: the Newton crossword game. Try and form words out of the letters given you. Play against up to 3 other people or Newton controlled players. Big Notes: Lets you have notes in the note pad up to 32k in size (the standard limit is 4k.) Completely transparent, just keep writing. KeyMan: Adds a row of keys to the normal keyboard (select all, cut, copy, paste, open Grafitti, front-delete,) a calculator display to the numeric keypad (for small calculations,) and a month view to the date keypad (to paste a selected day into the current text view.) (shareware) More Folders: More Folders is a utility to improve the accessibilty of the filing on the Newton, as well as to allow for more filing categories. When you want to file an item, you tap on the folder icon, and a pop up list pops up. The current folder has a check mark next to it, and you can file an item simply by tapping on the new folder. To edit your folders, you tap on the "Edit Folders" item (the last one on the list.) Included in the package is Scroll Menus, so that if you want more than 19 folders you can view them all on screen. (shareware) PackFix: PackFix is a small autopart (no extras drawer icon) which will check each installed store (on a message pad these are the internal RAM and a single PCMCIA memory card, if installed) for bad package data. If such bad data exists, if could be causing -10401 errors when your newton starts up or the storage card is inserted. PackFix will remove this bad data and report to you it's findings. (freeware) Wake Up Week: Wake Up Week is, at heart, a replacement for the built in overview in the calendar application. However, it can be configured to appear in other places besides just the calendar, and is much more powerful than the built in overview. Basically, when you open Wake Up Week you are presented with a list of all upcoming Meetings, Day Notes, and To Do's over a particular period. Initially this is one week (just like the overview in the calendar) but it is easy to change this to view either a longer or shorter period of time. You can also file to dos and date items in your folders, and view only a particular folder's contents. (shareware) Drop To Do: An enhancement to the standard To Do list on the Newton, Drop To Do allows you to jot down To Do items in the note pad and drag and drop them onto a small button, adding them to the To Do list. It also lets you set priorities on various To Do items (from 1 to 100) and can alert you when you have an upcoming To Do. (shareware) User Picker: Allows you to store multiple configurations (handwriting recognition, name, address, etc.,) in the same newton, and switch between them. (shareware) Clipper: Clipper places a button in the status bar of the notepad, or a floating, draggable button anywhere on the newton screen. You can select text and drag it onto the button to 'clip' it. Tapping on the button will bring up a list of all such clippings. Selecting one will paste it after the current insertion point. (shareware) Kwoter: A simple applet that will put up a humorous or insightful quote when you turn on your newton or awaken it from sleep. It can be configured to wait for a specific length of time before showing, using the prefs. Mail Edit: Offers a new way to read and reply to email on the Newton. It allows you to read messages in a variety of fonts and sizes, and allows easy access to the keyboard and, if it's installed, GraffitiȘ It also makes use of more of the screen, allowing you to edit more of a message at once. (shareware) Note Man: Places a small button in the upper left of your screen that will close the note pad, or, if another app is in front of it, will bring the note pad to the front. (shareware) Constants: Places a new entry in your formulas app that allows access to a variety of physical constants. (freeware, for now) Periodic Table: Adds a new entry to the formulas app with a periodic table. Clicking on an element brings up the data (such as atomic weight and volume) of it. Also, molecular weights of compounds can be found. (shareware) NotePopper: places a button in your statusBar that will pop up a list of notes to which selected text can be appended. (shareware) Score Pad: lets you keep score in two player games. (freeware) Icon Editor: A (very) simple icon editor for the Newton (look for an improved version, coming soon to an archive near you! currently freeware) What Error: Gives more information when an error message pops up. (shareware) Names To All Overview: Sets the name file to open to all names in the overview mode at startup, so that names app opens faster. (freeware) In Box Expander: Allows mail and beamed items to be received on the card or internal store. Also makes in and out boxes, connection, and card slips draggable. (freeware) Librarian: Saves your place in books, ink notations, and any bookmarks you make through hard restarts. Also allows you to use the power switch as a 'next page' button. (shareware) NameSelector: Pops up a window in which a single character can be entered. After writing that letter, it opens the name file and moves to the name which starts with the letter written. (shareware) Store Keeper: Changes the default store whenever you're in Names or Dates so that information entered there always ends up on the internal store. (shareware) Capitalizor: Allows you to change the case of an entire note to all upper or lower case, or capitalize all words in a note. (freeware) Scroll Menus: Scroll menus will allow any menu with too many items to fit on screen to scroll. If there are more items after the items shown, tapping on the down arrow will show the next screenful, and tapping the up arrow will show the previous screen. The most common use for this is the card app in the extras drawer. Now, if there are more than 23 packages installed on your newton, you can get to all of them to delete those you no longer want.
