PW Dial v2.0 by DMP Systems --------------------------- PW Dial is a shareware program. It lets you use a big, telephone type, keypad to enter a password (letters and numbers). Now you donÕt have to write a password or tap it out on a little keyboard. It also: Doubles as a touch tone phone dialing pad. Has a Theft / Alarm function. Makes the dialer touch tones louder. No more wimpy sounds when dialing - in any program. I gotta to tell you: ------------------------- PW Dial relys on one internal window name that is not officialy undocumented. It also redirects some calls that go to the "Raw Dial" ROM code to my dialing routine for louder sounds. Neither would qualify as a "skanky hack", I'm just taking advantage of the way Newton does things. I've taken great pains to check for any conflicts and to keep it simple and straight forward. At this time it works. It may break in future Newtons. PDW has NOT been tested on a MP120, yet. It has been tested on a 100 and 110 and with the 1/30/95 1.3+ OS updates. Many nifty programs use undocumented things and never break. Then again, some do. Just wanted to tell you, up front. Installing PW Dial ---------------- First backup your Newton. It's a good idea. When was the last time you did it ? Install PW Dial to internal memory or a card using the Connection Kit or the Package Downloader. PW Dial is card friendly. But since I don't know what other things you have installed in your Newton, put it on a card first. Try it out. All ok ? Great ! Put it internally now, if you want. How To Use PW Dial ------------------ After installing , PW Dial is active. It will pop up about 1 second after you turn on your Newton and you have a password set. Then just tap out a password on the keypad. A simple beep sound is used when entering a password to keep (real smart) people from overhearing the tones and decoding them. When the password screen goes away, the PW Dial keypad will go away too. PW Dial initially locates itself above the window that shows your password as you enter it. You may drag PW Dial to any place on the screen using the title bar. If you make a mistake entering your password, use the ÒCeÓ key to start over and the Ò<-Ó to delete the last character. Use the four buttons at the bottom to shift between numbers and letters. When shifting, you don't need to wait for the actual buttons to change to the new letters. Just tap away ! PW Dial does not look at or disturb your password. It enters text into the window that you would write into. It only uses about 800 bytes of heap space and no cpu time. It enables itself after a reset. PW Dial has been tested on an MP 100 and MP 110. Theft / Alarm Function ---------------------- If you take longer than 20 seconds to enter a password (not counting the time Newton uses to initialize everything after a Reset or Card Insert) , Newton will start beeping and saying "Help Me !". This is most useful when somebody besides yourself turned Newton on or you have an alarm set. If Newton is yelping, you can still enter your password but it will take more time to do it. Tap between the yelps. If the Password Screen shows longer than 60 seconds (when entering a password or Newton wakes up for an alarm), PW Dial will put Newton back to sleep to conserve the battery. Using PW Dial to Dial a Phone -------------------------- To use the keypad for dialing, tap the icon in the Extra Drawer. The "Ce" and "<-" keys are changed to "*" and "#" and the letter shift buttons are hidden. Then just tap the numbers. Tap the X-close button when done. PW Dial gives you louder Tones ---------------------------- Even when using a call slip to dial a phone (like in Names), PW Dial overrides the internal dial routine to give louder touch tones. The tones it generates are in compliance with MaBell specs for duration and separation times and give you the same tones and translation as Newton: letters are dialed as numbers , comma = 2 seconds pause, q and z are dialed as '1', '#' and '*' are dialed. PW Dial v2.0 is a Full Function Program ----------------------------------- However, its usage time is limited. After 30 days, it will start reminding you to register. After 60 days it will expire. Registering PW Dial ------------------ PW Dial is Shareware. To register please send $10 and your Name, as it appears in your Newton (Extras -> Prefs -> Personal) to: David M. Pompea DMP Systems 62 Brittany Circle Rochester, NY 14618 email: AOL: DPOMPEA CIS: 74736,172 Then I'll send / email you a custom password, based on your name, to enter in the window that opens when you press the "Register" button. After entering a correct password, PW Dial will not bug you about registering and the "Register" button goes away. The password will remain in your Newton unless you do a complete memory wipe. If you are outside the United States, feel free to send me the equivalent in your local currency. Hey, I can go to the bank to exchange it too. If your copy of PW Dial has expired, you can still register it and re-activate it. I'll tell you how when you register. Deleting it from your Newton and re-installing it won't do. The trick of setting Newton years ahead before installing also won't work. Compuserve (CIS) registration: As of now, there is not a Shareware Registration ID# assigned to this program. CIS needs the program uploaded first before an ID# is assigned. Look for the ID# in the description for the file soon. Or, email me for it. A future version of PW Dial will: ------------------------------ 1. When used as a phone dialer, have a window showing the numbers as you enter them and have redial / memory, last 20 numbers (with the name) dialed memory. 2. Use little or no heap space when installed internally and less when installed on a card. 3. For registered users, have an Auto Part (invisible - no Extra Drawer icon) that lets you install the louder dialing tones by themselves. 4. Any other things people suggest. But, IÕm only going to enhance PW Dial if I get enough Shareware registrations. I've already added many functions after version 1.0. Guess how many people registered ? So this version has limitations (see above). DonÕt think for a minute that Òthe other guyÓ will send his in so you donÕt have to. You are Òthe other guyÓ. Shareware allows you to try before you buy, get information and support. All at no charge to you. Please Support Shareware ! Use with TimeLock ----------------- PW Dial has been tested with TimeLock v1.2 and 2.0 (a fine program by Hardy Macia). It works OK. IÕve set a delay time of 1/2 second after Power On for PW Dial to check if the Password Screen is showing before showing the PW Dial keypad. Credits ------- I would like to thank Jason Leigh. His idea for an ATM style password keyboard was in a post in the Internet Newton Newsgroup that I glanced at. Also, thanks to Phillip M. Torrone (PDC Phil on AOL) for the Theft Alarm idea.
