Drop To Do v1.0 ____________________________________________________ copyright 1994 Ben Gottlieb and Stand Alone Software Drop To Do is an enhancement for the built in To Do list on the Newton. It originally started life as a simple button on the note pad that let you write out to do items and drop them onto it, adding them to the To Do list, but has evolved considerably since then. There are three major parts to Drop To Do: The Note Pad button: This button will appear in your note pad (with a little check mark in it.) You can write your To Do in the note pad (in text or ink, though for some reason, ink won't always work) and drag it into the button and let go. You'll hear a small "click" meaning that the To Do item was successfully added. If you have the "Set date when dropping To Do's" option set if your preferences (see below) then a window will pop up with a small calendar, and you can set the To Do's completion date. If this option is not set, the To Do is set for the next day. Tapping on the button will pop up a list of all pending To Do's, and several other options. If Wake Up Week is installed, you will be able to open it by tapping on the "Open Wake Up Week" item (if it's not installed, this item won't be there.) Tapping on "New To Do" will open the To Do Editor (see below) and automatically create a new, blank, to do item. Tapping "Show Pending To Do's" will open the "Upcoming To Do's" window (see below,) showing you all pending To Do items. Tapping "Delete a To Do" will pop up another list, this time consisting of just your To Do's. Tapping on one will delete it and bring up the list again (so you can delete another.) Tapping outside the list will close it. The To Do Editor: This window allows you to create, edit, delete, and duplicate To Do items. At the top are left and right arrows, which will allow you to move to the previous and next to items (chronolgically.) If either of these are not shown, it means you are at the first or last item. Also there's the filing bar, which will allow you to filter only those to do's in a particular folder, and, if you're in the "All To Do's" folder, than a small text item showing the folder of the current to do. Below these is the date the To Do is for. Tapping on it will bring up a window in which a new date can be set. Next comes the edit field, where the actual To Do data is kept. This field will respond to the recognition settings in the note pad, and will scroll by using the scroll arrows at the bottom of the screen. At the bottom of the screen, there's an info button, "i", which will pop up a list with the option to change your preferences and find out how to use Drop To Do and contact me. The next button will mark the To Do as done or not, by tapping it. The third button will set the priority of the todo, from 1 to 10, or, by selecting "Special" from the menu, will open a window where a priority of 1 to 100 can be set, as well as the amount of time before the To Do's date that the To Do is shown in the "Upcoming To Do's" window (in days.) If your To Do is set for the 5th, and you've chosen 3 days notice, than beginning on the 2nd, the To Do will be in the "Upcoming" window. If this line is blank, no warning will be shown. Next is the completed slider, allowing you to progressively mark a to do as as certain percentage done. The filing button will allow you to file a to do in a particular folder, and the action button (the envelope) will let you create new to do's or delete or duplicate the current to do. Preferences: Here there are several settings to let you make Drop To Do work the way you want it to. ¥New To Do's will warn me by default If this box is checked, than whenever you add a To Do using Drop To Do, it will always appear in the Pending view. If it's not set, you'll have to go into the "Special" priority window to make it appear. ¥Start bugging me how far in advance When you add an alarm to a to do (by going into the special priority view,) this is the inital warning period. ¥Move undone To Do items up If you have a pending to do that is not marked done, and this box is checked, then each day it will be moved up, so that it is always due 'today'. ¥Set date when dropping To Do's If this is checked, then when you drag and drop a todo onto the Drop To Do button, a small window will pop up to let you set the date. If unchecked, the to do will be added as due the next day by default. ¥Priority 10 is more important the priority 1 If you grade your To Do's from most important to least important, 1 to 10, leave this unchecked. Otherwise, check it. This will affect how To Do items are sorted, and how the slider behaves in the Special Priority view. ¥Show completed To Do's in pop up If this is checked, then when the Drop To Do button is clicked, it will pop up a list of all to do's, regardless of whether they are marked done or not (done to do's will be marked with a small check mark.) Otherwise only undone to do items will be shown. ¥Tell me about upcoming To Do's at: If this box is checked, then each day, at the specified time, a window will open with your pending to do's. You can set the time by clicking the clock icon and entering the time on the clock face that pops up. Upcoming To Do's This window will be popped up when you hit the overview button in the To Do Editor, or if you have an alarm set in the preferences. It will list all pending to do's whose warning date is within their specified warning interval (set in the Special Priority view.) Clicking on a todo will open the To Do editor to that To Do. A quick note about alarms: Any newton application that uses an alarm will install a package (invisibly) that takes up 4k on internal RAM on your newton. The only way to get rid of this is to completely erase your Newton (a super hard reset, taking out all the batteries.) If any package using alarms has been installed on your newton, this package is there already. If not, Drop To Do will install it. Only one copy of it needs to be present for all applications to make use of it, but Apple requests that developers make their users aware of it. ___________ Legal Stuff: I am in no way responsible for any loss of data that may occur as a direct or indirect result of using this software package, so you can't sue me! _______________________________________________________________ If you have any comments, suggestions, bug reports, or requests, I can be reached at the following addresses: Internet: gottlb@rpi.edu eWorld: gottlb AOL: gottlb CompuServe: 76342,3057 Snail Mail: Stand Alone Software 708 Forest Ave. Evanston, IL 60202 _______________________________________________________________________________ This application is shareware. Ben Gottlieb Stand Alone Software ______________ One last thing: Some of you may have noticed that several of my applications have gone up in price. There are many reasons for this, but one of the major ones is that some people feel that it isn't worth it to send in a $5 registration fee. In the interests of fairness, all current users will still receive free upgrades. In addition, if you register $50 worth of software, the registration fee will be only $40. (This does not include the special offer of half off Scroll Menus with any other registration.) _________________ Other Stuff by me: Drop To Do: An enhancement to the standard To Do list on the Newton, Drop To Do allows you to jot down To Do items in the note pad and drag and drop them onto a small button, adding them to the To Do list. It also lets you set priorities on various To Do items (from 1 to 100) and can alert you when you have an upcoming To Do. (shareware) User Picker: Allows you to store multiple configurations (handwriting recognition, name, address, etc.,) in the same newton, and switch between them. (shareware) Mail Edit: Offers a new way to read and reply to email on the Newton. It allows you to read messages in a variety of fonts and sizes, and allows easy access to the keyboard and, if it's installed, Graffitiª It also makes use of more of the screen, allowing you to edit more of a message at once. (shareware) Note Man: Puts a small button in the upper left or upper right of your screen. Tapping it will bring the note pad to the front or, if it's already in the front, will close it.
