Salad© Version 2.1 ----------------- Salad is a program for Newton that will display the Julian Date or Week # in the Calendar / Dates program. A Julian date is in the form of YYYYDDD. Example: 1994155 is June 4th, 1994. Kind of like a Star Date. A Week # is just that. Week #1 starts on the first Sunday after the New Year. Salad is multi-date aware, if you select a range of dates, Salad shows the start and end date. How to use: ---------- When you launch Salad, it installs two little "patch / override" routines into the Dates program. It does not delete the old routines. One routine deals with displaying the "day of week, month, day" text in the top left of the screen. The other routine lets you change between the Julian / Week# and regular formats. The little patch routines call the routines that do all the work in the Salad program. Now just tap the X (close box) and you're done installing it. If your calendar is open, it changed to show Week#'s / Julian dates. Swtiching Between Date Formats ------------------------------ Just tap or press and hold, on the Date field and Salad will switch between the three date formats. It's best to tap at the bottom of the field as, on the MP110, there is a moon phase picture that pops up when you tap near the top of the screen. If you have trouble switching, try the tap between the date and the line below it. If you still have trouble switching, close Dates and then reopen. For some reason, Dates sometimes intercepts "taps" in the date area and thinks you are writting something. Removing Salad -------------- You can install Salad on a card and then remove the card. The Grip-O-Death will not get you. You use the "Remove Salad Patch" button to remove the routines if you are going to delete Julian. They are not removed when you delete the program from Newton ( but a Reset will clear them out). Other Misc. Things: ----------------- The Salad program has been tested on an Original Newton, Original Newton w/upgraded ROMS and a MP110. If for some reason, an error is encountered when computing the dates, Salad reverts back to the normal date display. The Salad program was inspired by a request from Marc Handler, who needed Julian dates. He bought one of my other programs so I did this for him. Version 2.00 was by request of Rick Karens to add Week #s. Version 2.1 Update info provided by Rolf Jeger. Thanks ! Thanks ! Thanks ! Thanks ! Thanks ! Thanks ! Thanks ! ------------------------------------------------------ Thanks for using Salad for Newton by DMP Systems. I hope you won't have any problems with it. But, if you do, just drop me a note on Compuserve (direct or via Internet) or AOL. I'll be glad to help you overcome any difficulties. Also, if you have any suggestions (I abhor the term 'input') please pass them along. Why Only $5.00 for a Shareware Fee ? ---------------------------------- First, If this were being sold in a retail store, the price would be $19.95 or more as the middle men have to get their share, the store would buy it at half (or less) of list price. etc. Second, maybe this will be written up in a MAC / Newton magazine as GREAT shareware and I'll get thousands of registrations ! After all, I LIKE low priced software, don't you ? Don't let the low fee fool you. It took me over 20 hours of work to figure out how to implement the patch to the Dates App , write Salad, test it, do the Docs, etc. If I had charged you for this at my regular job, it would be over a $1,500 cost. (That was for v1.00. Version 2.0 took another 10 hours.) I write shareware for fun & some profit. Salad has also enabled me to learn more & new things about Newton and internal Apps. (That was for v1.00. Version 2.0 took another 10 hours.) Other Newton Programs by DMP Systems ------------------------------------ No Sleep - The best program to keep Newton from sleeping when powered by the A/C Adapter. It does NOT patch or do funky stuff to Newton, like others. No Sleep also lets you download YOUR Startup and Shutdown sounds, Smart Sleep times via power level. Note: Sound download only for Macs (at this time). App Memory - Lets you clean up memory from the heap that other programs leave behind thus helping with low memory situations. Sysbeep - Lets Newton say "Uh Oh" or "What the Hell" when an alert box is shown. It replaces the normal system beep sound. Ttime - The smallest digital clock for the Newton that stays on the screen anywhere, on top of all other programs. Time & Temp. - Speaks the time and temperature (temp. only on orig & Newton 100). And Soon to Come: NewtDbª - a relational Data Base for Newton that can use any Dbaseª, Foxbaseª, Filemakerª or .dbf and text files. Thanks for reading all the way to the end! David M. Shorten internal code. Make compatable with any future apps that may patch Dates (the Thomas Volgger way). Since Salad now has 3 display formats, added remembering which one is shown - for after card remove/insert & resets. No more grip-o-death, but Salad uses a little heap (just a little, less than 800 bytes). 10/19/94 Version 2.1: Changed the way of determining the first Sunday of the New Year. Now is compatible with all languages and countrys. Minor internal changes per NTK guide for future Newtons. Minor Doc. changes. Things to consider adding: Make it an Auto Part - ie no icon in extra drawer - a bit of work. Make Salad active automatically after Reset / Install - easy to do.
