Set24.pkg Patching a little hole in the Newton OS: Why doesn't 24-hour mode stay on after a reset? I mean, if you had to re-enter your name and address onto your MessagePad every time you ran out of memory, we'd all be using Magic Links. Obviously, some information is reset-proof. Myself, I tell time in 24-hour style. I want my personal digital assistant to remember that without tapping six times after a reset. Set24 does just that. Eventually (I suspect) a future OS upgrade will, too, but in the meantime you can use this little ditty. New in version 1.1: Steve Holden suggested that the hours should read out as two digits-- that is, ρ01:34ξ rather than ρ0:34.ξ Good point, and that's all that's changed. To subscribe to his journal, NewtNews, email with 'subscribe newt_news' as the body of your message (no quotes). New in version 1.2: Several Australian and European Newtonians asked for a version that works from their locales, so the program is now universal. It will work from the default locale that your Newton is set to„ which is retained across resets. New in version 1.4: Now I know how the Apple engineers felt after System 7 came out. V1.2 was largely incompatable with itself. In an attempt to make it universal, I made it so that no one could use it, which I suppose means that everyone would be able to use it as well as anyone else no matter where in the world they are. (Thanks to Lewis Carroll.) Anyway, there was a version called "2.0" for a brief period which was never widely released; this isn't too far from 1.2, so that's why the numbers go the way they do. I paid a lot of attention to the heap usage. It still takes up a lot, but it takes up less than ever before. And it is world-ready. „„„„„„„„„„„„„„„„Installing You can install Set24 using the Newton Connection Kit, Newton Backup Utility, or another package utility (such as LunaTech Research's PDA Package Downloader). Set24 will not show up in your Extras drawer if you're using OS 1.x; if running OS 2.0, it'll wind up in your Extensions folder. It works immediately upon loading, and re-activates when you reset. It can be removed cleanly: it will set the locale to something valid if you do delete it, even if you change the locale in the meantime. It uses no space in the System soup. The package has been tested with a MessagePad 100 running OS 1.3(414313) and a MessagePad 120 running OS 2.0(515299)-1. I suspect it'll work with major OS releases. It may be installed on a card with no Grip-O-Death problems, but should go internal if possible. Unfortunately the program uses a lot of heap space: 3768 bytes on a good day. That's as small as I could make it. „„„„„„„„„„„„„„„„Hey, it's kind of free I received so much help on this program that I can hardly take credit for it! So I'd feel guilty if I took money for it. It's a gift to the Newton community, and I hope that others find it useful. However, if you do find it works for you: Check out some of the programs written by Alan Drogin, Hardy Macia, and Kris Noland; and send in a shareware fee to one of them. Ben Gottlieb has some sound thoughts on this: "Extensions which provide functions that Apple should have provided in the system software should be free." This is not, I think, because we think of ourselves as superior to the geniuses that made the Newton but rather because someday the functions will be included in the system. One of the worst things is to pay for a control panel or an extension, and then see it rolled into the next system release. (Like WindowShade, or BeHeirarchic.) „„„„„„„„„„„„„„„„Distribution This package may be distributed freely, as long as [1] this ReadMe file is included and [2] no fee is charged for its distribution. Online services which charge a reasonable hourly rate but do not charge for downloads may place it in their libraries. Distributors of CD-ROMs and other software libraries may include them if prior permission is given; write to the author for details. The author has also released, or will release, a number of other small but useful pieces of shareware and freeware. They're uploaded regularly to the usual sites.
