Nick's AutoLCD is freeware. You may give it to others at no charge. More about this under Legal Stuff.

 Overview:

AutoLCD is a small Newton program that automatically adjusts the displays contrast to the temperature. If you are using the Newton in the outside, it happens frequently that he gets warmer and thus you can't read the display. AutoLCD deals with that problem.

Who does it work?
AutoLCD reads the temperature at power up and compares it to the temperature your Newton had when powering down. If the two temperatures differ, AutoLCD will adjust the contrast accordingly. AutoLCD also adjusts while your Newton is running. The temperature gets checked every minute.
AutoLCD is smart! It reads the contrast setting before changing it, and only adds (or substracts) a value calculated from the temperature difference. So no matter where the slider is, it should work fine.
Due to the inertia of the temperature sensor, it's important that the sun doesn't shine directly onto the display. Always keep the cover closed. This way, both the displays temperature and the sensors temperature will match well enough to do the adjustment.
