The FITALY key arrangement minimizes pen travel: 84% of the text-entry keystrokes are placed in a very tight pattern, with the remaining keystrokes never more than two keys away. In addition, each key is placed near the keys most likely to follow it in English text. The effect is to minimize pen travel. In addition, the layout practically eliminates hand movement when typing text. This means that it is possible to type with the hand rested on the lower area, moving only the fingers holding the pen. 50 WPM on a Newton ------------------------------ Earlier versions of the FITALY keyboard have been released for Windows-based pen computers and this is the first version available on a PDA. The results are actually quite impressive: Tapping the 10-word standard test "Now is the time for all good men to come" can easily be done in less than 15 seconds on a Newton 130 and less than 12 seconds on the faster MessagePad 2000. This is 50 words per minute on a Newton! ÷ faster than most people ever achieve on the tiny ten-finger keyboards available on other PDAs (and certainly faster than anybody can write even on paper). Better Accuracy ------------------------ Another significant benefit is better accuracy. Very few mistakes are made when typing with the FITALY. This is a direct consequence of having eliminated hand movements: Pen taps that do not require moving the hand are much more precise. And of course, better accuracy means less time editing and correcting. Doing tasks that require text becomes very comfortable on the Newton: preparing faxes, answering email, typing memos, all become very realistic tasks.
