NoteThing¨ 2.0 Macintosh Version User Manual Requirements NoteThing requires a Newton MessagePad running Newton OS 2.0 or greater, and either a 68K Macintosh with a 68020 processor or greater or a PowerPC running MacOS System 7.1 or higher. Installation Copy all of the files on the floppy disk to a folder on your hard drive. Place the Apple Modem Tool, Serial Tool, and AppleTalk ADSP Tool files in your Extensions folder in your System Folder. Use the Newton Backup Utility or Package Installer to install the NoteThing.pkg file on your Newton. You may also wish to install the NoteThingButton.pkg file which will place a button on the note padÕs status bar which will automatically open the NoteThing package when tapped. If you do install the NoteThing Button package, make sure to install it on your internal store if you are using a memory card with your Newton. Registration Dialog The first time you launch the Macintosh NoteThing application, you will be prompted with the following registration dialog: Ê Enter your name, company, and the registration code you received along with the package. You may leave the company field blank if it does not apply. If you are registering the demonstration version of NoteThing, you can open the Registration Dialog by selecting the Register NoteThing menu item from the Apple menu. Establishing a Connection Connect your Macintosh and Newton by using either a serial or LocalTalk cable. Launch the Macintosh NoteThing application and select a connection method from the Connection menu. Ê Open the NoteThing package on the Newton. Ê Select either the Serial or AppleTalk next to the Connect Via label. Ê Tap the Connect button. If you are using an AppleTalk connection, you will then see the standard Network Chooser slip: Ê Your NoteThing application will show up in the list as ÒNoteThing-The Name of your MacÓ. Select your NoteThing application from the list and tap the close box. If you are connecting via a serial connection using the Printer port, you will need to turn AppleTalk off in your Chooser. The Notes List After a connection has been established, NoteThing will get an overview of all of the notes in the folder last used by the Notes package on your Newton. The title of the note and date created will be displayed in the notes list. The list is sorted by the date the note was created. Ê To view the notes in a different folder, click on the folder tab above the notes list and select a different folder from the popup menu. Ê To view or edit a note, click on the noteÕs overview in the notes list. Ê If your Macintosh supports Drag and Drop, then you can export notes directly to the desktop or to another Drag and Drop aware application by dragging a note overview from the notes list. Click on the note in the list and hold the mouse button down. While the button is still down, move the mouse to the left or right of the item so that it is outside of the notes list. You should then see a gray rectangle that you can drag the desktop or into any Drag and Drop aware application. Regular Notes Editing When you select a regular text note from the Notes List, NoteThing will load the note data from the Newton and place the title and text of the note in the two text editing fields on the right side of the NoteThing window. Ê These are both basic Macintosh text editing fields, however, if your Macintosh supports Drag and Drop, you can use drag and drop features to drag any selected text within the text box or to another text field or another Drag Manager aware application. Pressing the Tab key will toggle between the title and data fields. You can insert a real tab character into the text by pressing Command-Tab. Below the note data field are the maximum and current note size indicators. Ê The maximum note size is a preset value in the NewtonÕs Notes application. Once the current note size reaches the maximum note size, you will no longer be able to add additional text to that note. Saving Once you have made a change to a note, a red dot will appear at the bottom right hand corner of that noteÕs item in the Notes List. Ê This indicates that the note has been modified and can be saved back to the Newton by selecting Save from the File menu. Checklist and Outline Notes Editing Topics To edit the text in a checklist or outline note, double-click on the topic you wish to edit, or select the topic and press the Enter or Return key. This will open the Topic Editor window where you can edit the text for the topic. Ê When you are finished editing the topic, click the OK button or press the Enter key to apply the changes. Clicking the Cancel button or pressing the Escape key will leave the topic unchanged. Note that only the first line of each topic is displayed in the NoteThing window. Rearranging Topics By clicking and dragging the text of a topic in the NoteThing window, you can rearrange the order or indent of a topic. Ê Ê Ê Creating a New Topic When a checklist or outline note is selected, an Add Topic menu will appear at the end of the menu bar. You can create a new topic item by selecting Same Level, Lower Level, or Higher Level from the Add Topic menu. Ê The Same Level command will create a new topic item at the same level as the currently selected topic item, or at the end of the topic list if no topics are selected. Ê Ê The Lower Level command will create a new topic item at one level lower than (to the right of) the currently selected topic item, or at the end of the topic list if no topics are selected. If the currently selected topic is already at the lowest level possible (8 levels deep) the Lower Level command will not be available. Ê Ê The Higher Level command will create a new topic item at one level higher than (to the left of) the currently selected topic item. If no topics are selected or the selected topic is already at the highest level possible, the Higher Level command will not be available. Ê Ê You can delete a topic or set of topics by pressing the Delete key with the topics you want to delete selected. Saving Once you have made a change to a note, a red dot will appear at the bottom right hand corner of that noteÕs item in the Notes List. Ê This indicates that the note has been modified and can be saved back to the Newton by selecting Save from the File menu. Exporting Notes You can export a note, folder of notes, or all notes to a text file by selecting Export Current Note, Current Folder, or All Notes from the Export sub menu in the File menu. Ê You will then be prompted with the standard Macintosh save dialog where you can select the location and name of the text file to be created. Ê The Export Settings Dialog The Export Settings dialog allows you to specify what items to export and what type of delimiters to add between items. You can access the Export Settings dialog by selecting Export Settings from the File menu. Ê Clicking the Defaults button selects the items shown here. Use the Export section to specify which parts of a note you want to have exported. The Between Items section allows you to have a return, tab, or space inserted after each item selected in the Export section. This character will also be used between topic items for checklist and outline notes. The Between Notes section allows you to have a return, tab, or space inserted after each note exported when exporting a folder or all notes. The Between Folders section allows you to have a return, tab, or space inserted after each folder exported when exporting all notes. The Notes Info Chunk Size Dialog This dialog can be opened by selecting Notes Info Chunk Size from the Edit menu. The chunk size determines how many note info frames are retrieved at a time when switching folders. Ê By default, the chunk size is set to 10. Increasing this number will decrease the time required to switch between folders, but will use more memory on the Newton. If you set the chunk size too high, it may cause the Newton to crash when switching to a folder with a large number of notes. Printing You can print a note, folder of notes, or all notes by selecting Print Current Note, Current Folder, or All Notes from the Print sub menu in the File menu. Ê The Print One item in the File menu will print the current note with the current printer settings without having to through any of the standard Macintosh printing dialogs. Speech If your Macintosh has Speech Manager software installed, a Speech menu will appear in the menu bar. Ê Any text field in the main NoteThing window or any NoteThing dialog can be used with the Speech menu. Selecting Speak All, or Speak Selection if there is text currently selected, will cause the Macintosh to speak the text in current text field. You can change the voice used to speak the text by selecting one of the available voices from the Voices sub menu in the Speech menu. Menu Descriptions The Apple Menu About NoteThing Opens the About NoteThing dialog. Register NoteThing If you are using the demo version of NoteThing, this will open the NoteThing registration dialog.
