* Purpose * Cols is designed to make a normal notepad checklist act like a multiple column list. You can define the width of each column, its title, and a popup menu of entry helpers. * Cols is meant for light-duty lists. It doesn't have a fraction of the power of Notion, for example. But I use it daily in place of the various list managers I own. * Setting up a Column List * To set up a new column list, first create a new checklist. Then open Cols. Fill in names for columns: you can create as many as four. If you only fill in two or three, the resulting list will only have that many columns. * Next, fill in the tab stops. In portrait mode, the last stop should not be more than 200. You should generally make each column at least 40 wide. * Now tap the install button. Your column headings will appear as the first topic in the checklist-in System font 9 bold underline. If you don't like the layout change the tabs and tap install again. * Menus * Once you have installed the basic list information, you can set up helper menus by tapping the diamond next to the relevant column. When you close the menu-entry slip, the non empty items are sorted alphabetically and stored immediately. * A menu consisting of the single word "Dates" is treated specially. It will produce a helper menu consisting of the next 30 days. * Exampl * Bills * My personal list of bills to be paid looks like this: the columns are entitled "Who", "When" and "Amt". The tab stops are 105, 150 and 170. * The menu for "Who" is things like "Visa". The menu for "When" is just "Dates" * Using a Column List * New Topics * Tap the first topic button (the "new sister" button). An entry slip will appear with the column names and space to enter information. If you've set up menus there will be diamond marks to the left of a column name. * When you close the slip, the information will be entered into the new topic. * Entries are in System font 9 bold. * Editing Old Topics * Tap the topic you want edit. The entry slip will appear with the topic info filled in. * Modify the information a you want and the close the slip. * Notes * Freeware * Cols is © Stephen Millman, 1996, all rights reserved. It is freeware. * My email address is StephenM35@aol.com * Printing * In its current incarnation, a Cols list will not show the correct tabs when printed. * Freezing/Removing * Freezing Cols, or tapping the "Remove" button for a list will make the list behave like a normal checklist. Thawing Cols or tapping the "Install" button again for a list will restore the status quo ante. However, if a checklist is the front note when you thaw or freeze Cols (or install it), the Checklist's definition will be erroneous. To correct this, tap the overview button to get an overview, then tap the overview button to get back to where you where.
