A Notepad utility for the Macintosh

It offers an easy ability to get text notes entries to and from the Macintosh -- and uses the DILs 2.0.

This utility requires a Newton 2.0 device (sorry for those with 1.x!) and operates on each store (internal or memory card) individually -- it's not quite smart enough to deal with all Notepad entries as if they were all linked together, as the Newton does it.

The beta version here has some improvements over the last version (a1):

-	It now downloads outlines and checklists from the Notepad.  HOWEVER, this does not mean that checklists and outlines can be created on the Mac and downloaded to the Newton -- they cannot.

-	The text allowed for a Notepad entry is about 16K.  

-	A "Dup Entry" button will duplicate the current Notepad entry (updating it with the current day and time).  This is useful when you have an entry that includes non-text items.

-	Some memory leaks have been plugged.



How to use:
----------
You connect to the Newton via the Newton's Connection application (also known as "Dock").  Once connected, all control is done through the Macintosh.  Each note entry comes up individually in the text area and you can navigate by way of the buttons on the bottom right.  You can connect via serial or AppleTalk and the notes visible should be those that have text in them.  In a note entry that contains both text and drawings, it just gives you the text.  The text read by NewtNote is that which the Newton has already deciphered -- not ink-text.

The Notepad entry can be saved to disk as a text file via the "Save" button.

New entries are created by clearing the text field, inserting the text you want, and then clicking "New Entry."


Description of Window 
--------------------

Connect
Starts the connection process to the Newton.

Disconnect
Disconnects an established session with the Newton.

Radio buttons-
  Printer -- MNP serial using the printer port
  Modem  -- MNP serial using the modem port
  ADSP    -- Connect via AppleTalk
Note: these buttons will effect how you will connect on the Newton -- the Connection App will present a different slip when connecting via ADSP versus Serial.

Store List
The list on the right that is created when the Newton connects is the list of stores that are present on the Newton.  The Notepad application can put entries on any store on the Newton, and you can choose which store you are looking at by selecting the store in this list.  If you put a different card in your Newton, a different store name, with different entries, will appear in NewtNote.

Clear Field
When creating a new note for the Newton, use this to clear the text field of the window so you can start afresh.

New Note
This puts the content of the text window into a new note in your Newton Notepad.  If the field is blank, it will simply put a blank note in your notepad.

Dup Entry
This button takes the current entry that you are browsing and duplicates it, adding it to the Notepad with the current date and time associated with that entry.  This will duplicate the entire entry of the note -- not just the text portion visible in the text area of NewtNote's window.

Delete Entry
Delete the current entry.

Save Note
Save the text of this entry into a text file on your Mac.

The two numeric fields that follow tell you which entry you are looking at and also the total entries on this store.

Reset
NOT Reset the Newton.  It means go back to the beginning of the list of notes on this store.  Current will equal one.

ResetToEnd
Go to the end of the list of entries on this store.

Be careful when you are working on a store that is almost full -- if you write out an entry that is too big, the connection will simply break -- I'm not pre-flighting the memory on the Newton before writing.

This is entirely freeware -- a very handy utility for anyone who wants to put Notepad entries onto their Newton and be able to read them on the Macintosh and save the notes as text files.
