SimpleMail is a Newton e-mail transport that lets
you send and receive messages over the internet using POP/SMTP. It uses the Newton
Internet Enabler (NIE 1.1 or NIE 2.0), so it will only work with Newton 2.0 or better. See
the included version history for new update features. It works with MP120, MP130, MP2000
and eMate. It's compact, taking up only 116K storage space. Best of all, SimpleMail is
free! Credit: Simon Bell.
Three small applications (3k each) the author
wrote for his own personal use, now offered to the Newton Community as freeware. Backlight
toggles the MP's backlight. PowerOff turns the MP off. PowerOff & Lock turns the MP
off and causes the "Newton Login Screen" to appear when it's next turned on.
These applications where written for and tested on an MP2000. Source code included for
anyone who wants to use it. Credit: Sean Breen.
The Ink Spot off line news reader includes lots
of options to customize how news is received, read, sorted and deleted. There is no
artificial limit on the number of messages to be downloaded, headers may be kept or
discarded to help save space, and messages may be brought into the Newton's Notepad.
InkSpot also includes a composition feature to help news group posters count to 10 when
needed -- messages may be replied to, edited, mulled over, and sent at a later date.

handling and tons of fixes for user reported problems. Credit: DejaVu Software.
SysPatch is an overall system utilities and
function patch that fixes or improves some problems introduced with Newton Operating
System 2.1. Apple has been unwilling or unable to produce these much requested
feature fixes, so the author has made this patch available. From global sound
functions to error workarounds and common I/O box issues, this patch does a great job of
filling the holes. Credit: Richard Li.
The SBM Utilities for Newton is a collection of tools primarily for
developers, but some - like Backup and Restore - are useful for everyone. This product has
been significantly enhanced after a thirteen part beta program. Checking out the
documentation before use is highly recommended. Also available below: Icon Editor
beta for use with SBM Utilities. Docs are current as of version 1.3.2 -- for
the latest documentation visit the

Backdrop is a backdrop application for Newton devices with OS 2.1 (which means a MP2000,
MP2100, or eMate 300). Advantages? It's small (15K), it's fast, it takes up little heap,
and it's free. This backdrop program includes many features and options including
Anniversary and Birthday warnings and a great 10061 error work-around! The latest version
includes the ability to use pictures for backdrops -- woohoo! Also available: more
options and some fixes. See included readme for usage instructions and update
specifics. Credit: Avi Drissman.
Horsehead Software brings the Newton community yet another time and
money management tool: Pocket Landlord! Wouldn't it be useful to know how much
of your time and effort goes into property management? With April 15th just around
the corner, rental property improvement is a great tax deduction, and now you have proof
of hours spent just in case your massive deduction triggers an audit. Credit:

Tired of
installing 10 small apps for the customized Newton interface you're looking for? If we at
Planet Newton could only recommend one interface package it would have to be FiveSpeed's
new Dash Board. Dash Board gives Newton users instant (and more importantly constant)
access to any application installed or running on the MP. One of the best features is a
HWR shortcut box! For instance, if a user wants to run Calculator while in another app, he
only has to write a "C" in the small text box on the Extras bar and Calculator
pops up. The features in this package are numerous and full -- from glance access to time,
battery and memory status, volume, contrast and backlight controls to a Win95/Start-like
popup program menu and user programmable scripts. The latest version includes a few fixes
and screen redraw enhancements. Credit: FiveSpeed Software.
Hemlock is a freeware internet meta-search program for the Newton which is compatible
with plug-ins originally made for the Sherlock(tm) search tool for MacOS(tm) 8.5.
Using these plug-ins, Hemlock allows the user to simultaneously search on-line merchants,
news organizations, search engines, even top-ten lists, then tabulate and neatly display
the results in a scrolling overview list. Clicking on any result in the list launches the
appropriate web page. Hemlock requires NewtonOS 2.x and recent versions of Newt's
Cape (a Newton web browser) in order to run. Credit: Sean Luke.
